Understanding Chinas Role in Canada’s Economic Independence from the United States

With the recent geopolitical frictions between Canada and China impacting businesses, there have been discussions about reducing the trade an investment between the two markets. However, China-related interactions generated more than $55 billion of cumulative GDP in 2018, and as of 2020, Statistics Canada demonstrated that there was $31.7 billion in trade (2) between the two countries. This provides an opportunity to lessen Canada’s vulnerability to American economic mishaps and protectionist trade policy. This innovation project will explore the economic effects of Canada’s divergence from trade with China and the long-term implications of its continuation. The project will provide quantitative evidence to increase awareness and build a macroeconomic knowledge foundation for those looking to help Canada achieve independence from the U.S. The Cansbridge Fellowship seeks to gain an understanding of this situation with hopes of contributing to the expansion of Canada’s innovation sector.
