Our airways are lined with mucus, transported by cilia in a process called the mucociliary escalator. This mucus protects against inhaled germs and pollutants but also poses a barrier to inhalable nanoparticles (NPs) used for drug or gene delivery. Understanding how NPs penetrate this layer is crucial. This internship uses Brownian dynamics simulations to study […]

The goal of this project is to develop a novel titanium carbide grain refiner for improving the strength of the lightweight aluminum 319 alloy. Enhanced use of lightweight alloys in automobiles, currently limited because of their strength, can enable auto industry to manufacture lighter and more fuel efficient vehicles. Titanium carbide, due to its ability […]

Current EEG (electroencephalogram) systems used in clinical and diagnostic settings are often bulky, expensive, and require patients to remain in a controlled environment for extended periods. This limits their accessibility and practicality, especially for patients suffering from neurological conditions such as epilepsy who require continuous, long-term brain monitoring to detect abnormal brain activity and predict […]

This project will advance a classroom prototype called Laundri-Buddi toward a market-ready product. Laundri-Buddi is a smart, battery-powered sensor that uses vibration sensing to monitor the activity of appliances such as washing machines, dryers, and small industrial equipment. The device detects when a machine’s operational cycle starts and ends, and wirelessly sends that information to […]

The purpose of this project is to expand on an automatic walker braking system prototype. The system is intended to cause the medical walker to brake during sit-to-stand, stand-to-sit, and loss of contact situations through the help of sensors and motors. Currently, the system in functioning reasonably well but could use improvements from an accuracy, […]

Neonatal jaundice affects a significant proportion of newborns—up to 60% of full-term and 80% of preterm infants—making timely and effective phototherapy essential. Current treatment methods typically rely on stationary blue-light devices that require infants to be placed in incubators, often separating them from parents and disrupting early bonding. PrintedSUN is addressing this critical healthcare challenge […]

Compost leachate (CL) is a liquid by-product generated during composting that poses a significant environmental risk due to its ability to contaminate surface and groundwater. This research explores an innovative CL treatment strategy by integrating two complementary processes: ammonia stripping (AS) and electrooxidation (EO). The study proposes two approaches: the first is to apply ammonia […]

Managing the risks from snow avalanches during winter mountain travel is vital for the Canadian avalanche industry. An average of 14 avalanche-related fatalities per year occurred between 1997 and 2014 with the majority of those triggering the avalanches themselves. We propose a detailed examination of avalanche risk management practices using the conceptual model for avalanche […]
