Identify Novel Genes Responsible for Female Infertility and Recurrent Miscarriage

Couples with infertility and recurrent miscarriage suffer from not being able to have children. They visit the best specialists in different medical centers, sometimes in different cities and countries seeking help before their biological clock declines and many do not achieve pregnancies. The overarching goal of this project is to identify novel genes for female infertility and recurrent miscarriage, understand the mechanisms of these conditions to be able to test patients for mutations in these genes and consequently improve genetic counselling and management of these conditions. This will allow offering more patients personalized treatment directed to their exact defect.

Development of a nondestructive condensation sampler for airborne viruses

The proposed project is to develop a bioaerosol sampler which will have minimal impact on the infectivity of captured viruses. Airborne viruses are subjected to environmental conditions which could affect their potential of infectivity as well as their capacity to resist the shearing forces and desiccating conditions during sampling procedures with standard sampling apparatuses. This leads to the underestimation of infective viral loads in aerosols and could have a dramatic impact on the nature of the decisions taken for aerosol contamination control. The development and characterization of this sampler would allow a better understanding of the transmissibility of viral diseases through the airborne route. The partner organization could greatly benefit from this project by have the opportunity to offer exclusive services to its clients and, consequentially broadening its target market to national and international contracts. Furthermore, the commercialization of this sampler could benefit research laboratories around the world for bioaerosol research.

Étude de faisabilité pour l’implantation d’une cellule de travail robotisée collaborative dans une petite entreprise manufacturière

Le présent projet se veut une étude de faisabilité sur l’élaboration d’une cellule robotisée de collaboration entre humain et machine. Le défi est encore plus important du fait de la taille de l’entreprise. Il est en effet rare qu’une entreprise de cette taille (moins de 10 employés) utilise la robotisation pour améliorer ses processus et pourtant, il y a déjà une cellule de palettisation robotisée et plusieurs sections de l’usine qui sont complètement automatisée. L’enjeu sera de réussir à démontrer le rendement de l’implantation d’un cobot (pour robot collaboratif).

Additive Manufacturing of Cockpit Interior Component and Fatigue Property Testing

The CAE flight training services and flight simulators provide the future pilots with digital immersion experience and operational support solutions. Currently, additive manufacturing is found to be a valid way to fabricate the cockpit interior components with lower lead time and accelerate the product development. In order to understand the fatigue behaviors of printed component with different materials, settings and explore the possibility of additive manufactured structures, the proposed objectives of this project are: 1) to investigate the proper printing parameters and settings that avoid printing defects 2) to test the fatigue property and mechanism of the printed part under expected/maximum load. Finally, the requirement of composite reinforcement and interactions with the composite material will be analyzed.

Improved Collision Detection through Neural Guided Motion Planning

One of the primary challenges of creating robots that can complete useful real-world tasks is providing the robot
with the ability to navigate through its environment while avoiding collisions with objects. In order to do this,
robotics relies on the use of collision checkers to determine which actions will result in a collision. The time taken
for a robot to come up with a collision-free path depends on how fast it can check for collisions and how often it
has to query the collision checker. We propose to reduce the time spent on collision checking by using data
generated from simulated motion planning problems to train neural networks to predict the best way for a collision
checker to represent objects – decreasing the time taken by a collision detector to determine a collision, as well
as training neural networks to predict how close a proposed path is to objects in the environment – decreasing the
number of times a collision checker needs to be queried.

Public Projections of the Living Architecture Systems Group

The research project bridges across international architectural exhibitions using nextgeneration dissemination venues, including online and physical screenings. The project includes the immersive architectural environment Grove and its associated CGI film Grove Cradle. The film was created for the 17th Venice Biennale of Architecture as a collaboration between Professor Philip Beesley of Canada, Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones of the United Kingdom, and Salvador Breed of the Netherlands. Grove Cradle was projected within an immersive sculpture environment in Venice for a largely academic audience. This research project will “bring home” Grove Cradle in one or more extensions of its initial projections, including a large-scale major public venue in Toronto, Canada, taking on new meaning for the local community and providing new public context.

La création au Québec d’une coopérative telle que Smart en Belgique: une nouvelle forme de revitalisation syndicale?

Au Québec comme en Belgique, les travailleurs autonomes ou indépendants ne peuvent pas être syndiqués et négocier des conventions collectives de travail, car ils ne sont pas salariés au sens de la loi. Ils ne peuvent pas non plus bénéficier de toutes les politiques sociales, ce qui les place en situation de précarité. Depuis une vingtaine d’année, de nouvelles formes d’emploi émergent et il en résulte une augmentation de travailleurs de multiplate-forme tels que uber, doordash ou de travail à la pige, etc. Ces emplois de très courte durée ne s’accompagnent pas de sécurité pour les travailleurs. En Belgique, il y a donc eu la création d’une coopérative nommée Smart qui sert d’intermédiaire. Ainsi, le travailleur dépose ses factures dans le logiciel de Smart et la coopérative lui verse son salaire. De la sorte, il devient salarié de Smart et peut éventuellement toucher des allocations de chômage et autres programmes sociaux. La coopérative fournit aussi des services tels que le recouvrement, des services juridiques, etc. Nous cherchons donc à voir comment un modèle serait possible au Québec, tout en incluant cette forme de coopérative au sein des syndicats.

Tree restoration on marginal land: Impacts of historical land use, climate change, and bioamendments on carbon sequestration potential

Carbon is a component of CO2, an important greenhouse gas (GHG) responsible for climate change. Forests store more carbon than is found in the atmosphere, with most of this stored in the soil. This ability to store carbon has led to many tree-planting projects across Canada including a large-scale tree restoration program led by Reckitt Benckiser Canada. But there are important knowledge gaps before forest soils can be counted towards emission targets. Critically, past land-use (e.g., agricultural) can influence a forest’s ability to store carbon. This research will 1) examine the impact that past land use practices on carbon storage, 2) explore strategies to promote carbon storage, and 3) determine the impact of future climate extreme events on the stability of the carbon store. The findings will provide evidence-based results to maximize carbon storage across Reckitt Benckiser’s tree restoration program, and for new tree restoration management policies in BC that will be relevant to other regions across Canada.

The role of Agricultural Societies in the Changing Trajectory of Agri-food System Transformation

My research will take place in the City of Beaumont, focusing on the Beaumont and District Agricultural Society (BADAS) and its potential role as a collaborative partner with the City of Beaumont and food system actors in the community of Beaumont. My research aims to address a gap in the literature concerning the roles agricultural societies are or could potentially be taking in response to the changing needs of agriculture in relations to building resilient and place-based agri-food systems, such as through the development of urban agriculture. My examination of strategies adopted by agricultural societies elsewhere can make an important contribution to future planning by BADAS and urban planners in Beaumont, as well as for other communities in Alberta. This research will also add to an understanding of the role of social economy organizations in responding to local values and goals through strengthening localized food systems.

Haptics-Enabled Virtual Reality Simulation of External Ventricular Drain: A Pilot Study

Virtual reality surgery simulation is an emerging technology in surgeon training to train surgical motor skills in virtual environments. This technology reduces the need for training on patients, cadavers, and animals, and enables objective evaluation of the skill acquisition process in a systematic manner. Although this technology has attracted a great deal of interest in several surgical disciplines, its use remains minimal. One reason is the low level of immersiveness with the current state-of-the-art in VR. Recently, wearable haptic gloves otherwise known as smart gloves have been introduced and they are gaining popularity in various virtual and mixed reality applications; however, the application of this new technology is yet to be evaluated for surgery simulation. The objective of this project is to develop a surgery simulator that is enhanced by a haptics glove. In close interactions with surgical staff, we will simulate the placement of External Ventricular Drain, a common operation in neurosurgery. The simulator to be developed in this project will be used in a user study to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the haptics gloves in surgical simulation.

Aboriginal B-Model Canvas

This project will provide the necessary research for the development of a business model for Aboriginal entrepreneurs in Northwestern British Columbia. Nesika Management Ltd. has previously used Alexander Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas to teach First Nations entrepreneurs, but finds that the model lacks cultural specificity and is not ideal for the needs of Aboriginal entrepreneurs. By combining research into effective mainstream business models such as the Business Model Canvas and the Venture Intelligent Quotient with the visual tool of the Aboriginal medicine wheel, this internship aims to develop a successful, culturally sensitive business model in order to teach entrepreneurship in the best way. As a result of this research, Nesika will be able to better achieve their goal of economic self-reliance for Aboriginal people by helping Aboriginal entrepreneurs to achieve prosperity and self-reliance in their entrepreneurial ventures.
