Improving Apple Fruit Quality Through CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Editing

The future of plant breeding arguably lies in the direct genetic transformation of plants for improved traits via gene editing. CRISPR is a relatively new and powerful gene editing tool that can be used to edit the DNA of any organism. CRISPR gene editing has the potential to improve apple fruit quality and speed up the traditionally long and labour-intensive process of developing new apple varieties. The primary barrier to the successful implementation of gene editing tools in apple is the development of robust tissue culture protocols. Tissue culturing is required to prepare apple tissue to be transformed with gene editing machinery. This research project aims develop and optimize a tissue culturing protocol for apple and then edit key genes in apple using CRISPR. The expected outcomes of this research project are to develop a robust tissue culturing protocol for apple and demonstrate successful editing of the apple genome to improve fruit quality and sustainability traits.

An Extended Reality Social-Emotional Development Companion Agent Framework and Parental Support for Children

Parenting is challenged by the pace of change in information technology, impacting child development and parent-child relationships. Children learn and grow in online environments and their development, perspectives and understanding of the world are impacted by multiple communities, which creates risks to safety, relationships and experiences. Supporting technologies will help bridge this gap, intervening with an extended reality and internet-of-things, Social Emotional Development Companion Agent Framework and Parental Support for Children is proposed. Objectives for this companion system: i) To design conceptual frameworks for exploring the parent-child needs based on the state of the art emerging technologies and deriving requirements for companion agent systems that support parents and children; and ii) To develop early prototype smart-home conversational frameworks with mixed reality interfaces as future companion systems, designed from ideation sprints with stakeholders. These will contribute to systems that support growth, development, and healthy parenting in a rapid technological environment.

Water Quality, Waste-Solids Dewatering, and Seawater Filtration at a Zero-Exchange Recirculating Aquaculture Farm

Due to the depletion of natural fish stocks, the aquaculture industry must build larger land-based farms to meet the growing demand for seafood. Currently, the availability of clean, inland fresh water is limiting the size of farms so the only way the industry can expand these farms is by reducing the water exchange. Cooke Aquaculture Inc. is currently constructing a state of the art zero-exchange system to produce salmon smolts. This research project aims to improve the understanding of zero-exchange systems by exploring three areas which require further research. The water quality will be monitored throughout the new facility’s first production cycle to determine if metal ions or dissolved organic matter will accumulate to a harmful level. Additionally, a centrifuge along with different dosages of chemical and physical conditioners will be used to determine if a centrifuge can dewater aquaculture sludge more effectively than equipment currently used in the industry. Lastly, a membrane filtration system will be designed, and tested to determine if seawater can be effectively sterilized and desalinated so it can be used as a water source.

SDG Strategic Planning at the City of Peterborough

The purpose of this research is to help the City of Peterborough develop a framework for engaging with key stakeholders in the city to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Peterborough. It aims to develop a stakeholder map and a deeper understanding of the spheres of control and influence each stakeholder has on the specific targets and indicators in question. This research project will focus on the SDG-related metrics that are within the sphere of control of the City of Peterborough, as an active agent, and are articulated under SDG 9: Infrastructure and Industrial Innovation and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. It will then develop a strategy for effective engagement with these key stakeholders that the City can use to advance the implementation of the SDGs in Peterborough.

Responsible Messaging in Social Media

Refresh Wellness app intends to offer a novel approach to address the global prevalence of mental health disorders, in Canada and abroad. We are in the process of developing a comprehensive mental wellness platform that can be used in both individual and workplace settings to monitor and analyze mental health patterns, and generate appropriate solutions to address them.
The app features a system that allows users who follow each other to exchange messages back and forth. Ideally this system will support use cases such as asynchronous support groups. However, there is potential for this feature to be abused by some users, a behavior that is common on many popular social media apps today. Since the Refresh Wellness app intends to support mental wellness, we cannot allow toxic behavior to propagate through our user base. Refresh intends to apply an aggressive moderation approach, including both automatic filters to prevent objectionable content and tools for the user to mitigate contact with toxic users or user behaviour. This project seeks to both provide a messaging system and the moderation back-end to let our employees take effective action against both content and users when needed.

Business Analyst Intern – RMA

Currently the RMA/Canoe uses spreadsheets and paper copies of receipts to submit expense claims and for company credit card tracking. Manually entering this information into a spreadsheet and managing the multiple paper copies of the receipts has become cumbersome for our employees’ submitting expenses, as well as for our payroll and accounting team. We are looking for a solution to automate the expense and credit card tracking and submission process. We are looking for a mobile application where the employee will be able to take a photo of the receipt from a mobile device and create the expense and/or credit card submission through the app. Ideally this application will have OCR capabilities to capture the data on the receipt so that the employee does not have to enter this information in manually. This application should also have the capabilities to properly code the expenses into our financial system. The desired outcome of this project would be to implement a 3rd party mobile app that satisfies all the requests from our users and that integrates with our GP financial system.

Towards Representation of Collective Memory: A Holonic Multi-Agent System

Collective memory helps societies access and learn from the knowledge that they have gained through experience in the past, and make better informed decisions at present. When collective memory is explicit and accessible, it facilitates knowledge transfer within the society, helps reach decisions faster, and contributes to preparation for risks. However, access to collective memory can be a challenge because it is often not explicit. Moreover, collective memory changes and evolves constantly, in part due to the passing of time, and partly because of innovations, societal transitions, and environmental change. These complexities give rise to questions such as: How can we represent the collective memory and its evolution? How can we find and retrieve specific information in the collective memory? What can we learn about the changes of the collective memory? To shed light to theses questions, this project uses Artificial Intelligence approaches.

Junior IT Admin

ArrKann Trailer & RV Centre is a third-generation family-owned and operated privately held business. The company has six locations throughout Alberta, and over 130 employees. ArrKann has experienced significant growth over the past four years, adding four of their current six locations, and increasing their headcount by 49%. Recently, the company has developed an IT Strategy. The intention of the strategy is to move from ad hoc IT systems, and support, towards well-designed solutions and processes which will support organizational growth. Over the course of 2022, Arrkann will be working on two major IT migrations, both related to our main server. The server dates back to 2012 and is reaching both its operational end-of-life (hardware) and the end-of-support for its operating system (software).
ArrKann has engaged IT service providers on an ad hoc basis in the past, but due to its recent growth, brought IT in-house last year. The company’s Senior IT System Administrator has quickly become a crucial resource for the company and staff, and the demand for his support services internally, coupled with the scope of these projects has created an opportunity for an internship with the company.

Advances to business and sport management professionals’ ethical decision making: A practical approach in collaboration with CCES

In collaboration with the CCES we will develop a practical approach to training business and sports ethics—one that enhances students, professionals, and sports participants and leaders’ ability to navigate “how to resolve ethical dilemmas” to minimize social and environmental damage and maintain the integrity of sport. This project aligns with one of the strategic pillars of the new CCES Strategic Plan: to develop ethical sport leadership and identify emerging ethical issues that are threats to Canadian sport, and support stakeholders to respond and develop solutions that address the issues. The multi-stakeholder inclusion (partnership) is necessary to provide situational context for ethical dilemmas that are peculiar to these environments. Although, individuals enter the workforce or sports arenas with an understanding of why unethical decisions are made, and what the consequences could be given these decisions, they lack the ‘how to’ knowledge to resolve ethical dilemmas given the situational context. Therefore, to address this gap, the proposed project will include multi-stakeholder involvement and pursue four key objectives: a. provide a range of decision-making frameworks to assist in ethical decisions, b. develop an “Ethical Dilemma” case library, c. create workshops with supporting materials for sporting organizations and executive training and, d. create an outreach/marketing plan in collaboration with CCES to improve workshop participation of target audiences.
