Clear Seas- Rediscovering Traditional Textile Methods of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation

This research project aims to explore and document the traditional textile methods of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, examining the impact of colonization, shipping, and fast fashion on these practices. By reestablishing traditional methods, the project seeks to foster cultural continuity and community connection. The study will employ qualitative methods, including interviews, participant observation, to gather data from elders and other community members & summarize existing research on Indigenous textile practices to identify gaps in the literature specific to the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. The anticipated outcomes include a comprehensive documentation of traditional practices and recommendations for cultural revitalization initiatives.

An asset management plan and policy serve as crucial tools for organizations aiming to optimize their asset utilization and management. These plans and policies provide a roadmap for maintaining and upgrading assets, ensuring cost-efficiency, and enhancing operational reliability. By implementing a well-structured asset management plan, organizations can make informed decisions regarding asset lifecycle management, reduce operational costs, and improve overall productivity. However, developing an effective asset management plan poses several challenges like availability and accuracy of asset data, financial and human resource constraints, stakeholders engagement and advancements and regulatory changes. This proposal aims to develop an Asset Management Policy and integrated Strategy for Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and Government of Saskatchewan, involving best practices, policy research, drafting and finalization, tool evaluation, resource identification, service level determination, implementation planning, monitoring updates, and capital planning process updates.

Xanadu, la compagnie conceptrice de PennyLane, a développé en collaboration avec ses partenaires des plugiciels permettant aux utilisateurs de répartir des fonctions quantiques vers différentes machines quantiques. Calcul Québec s’est ajouté à ces partenaires de développement pour créer un plugiciel permettant une communication entre PennyLane et MonarQ, un ordinateur à supraconducteurs développé par Anyon Systems et dont Calcul Québec sera le propriétaire. Le stagiaire aura pour responsabilités d’optimiser la façon dont les circuits quantiques définis par l’usager seront transmis à MonarQ pour améliorer la performance.

L2M – LigandQI: Empowering Drug Design with Quantum Information

Nearly 90% of drug candidates fail during the drug design and development process, resulting in exorbitant costs to bring a new drug to market. Our technology, LigandQI, addresses the critical shortcomings in current computational drug design programs by leveraging ab initio quantum chemistry to quantify ligand-receptor interactions with unprecedented accuracy. Unlike traditional methods, our program provides a comprehensive understanding of ligand-protein interactions at quantum information level, accelerating the drug discovery process. This innovative approach is designed to meet the evolving needs of researchers and pharmaceutical professionals, promising to drive innovation and expedite the development of targeted therapeutics.

Home Language Experiences in Immigration Families: Exploring the Language Challenges and Approaches of Young Adults in Canada

The proposed research project aims to understand how young adults from immigrant families in Canada maintain their home language while also learning English. A intern will help by recruiting participants, collecting and analyzing data through surveys and interviews, and developing a parenting program with community partner. The research will explore how factors like English proficiency, academic success, personality, and parenting styles affect home language use. The findings from this research will provide valuable insights to better support ethnolinguistic parents by developing a parenting program that helps them create a better home language environment for their children. Building on the challenges identified by our partner, the Multi-Cultural Health Brokers Cooperative (MCHB), this project adopts a community-based participatory framework. This approach aims to include and empower both our research partner and community members throughout the research process, building on previous local research that explored barriers and supports for newcomer families in Edmonton regarding preschool settings (Sumaru- Jurf & Felix-Mah, 2019; de Vos, Mukhi, Illumin, Chiu, Gokiert & MCHB, 2022).

Stage dans la caractérisation de l’anisotropie d’alliages d’aluminium

Le projet a pour objectif de renforcer le procédé d’extrusion de pièces en aluminium pour améliorer la productivité, augmenter la complexité des formes et garantir les performances mécaniques des profilés. Caractériser l’anisotropie des profilés extrudés en alliages d’aluminium (AA6063 et AA6082) fabriqués dans différentes conditions. Pour ce faire, il faudra effectuer des essais de micro traction dans diverses directions par rapport à la direction d’extrusion des profilés, mesurer l’évolution du coefficient de Lankford lors de la déformation pendant des essais de traction (une revue de la littérature pourrait être nécessaire), déterminer la texture des échantillons et faire le bilan de la fraction recristallisée pour chaque alliage, fournissant ainsi une base de données en fonction des paramètres d’extrusion connus. Les deux dernières étapes impliqueront probablement le polissage manuel et l’attaque chimique des échantillons, suivis d’observations et de mesures au microscope optique et à balayage électronique (MEB).

Formal and Informal Canadian Mentoring Research on Children and Youth

Canadian children and youth have been described as more socially engaged, educated, and diverse than previous generations, yet they also face unprecedented challenges. Youth are reporting social disconnection and mental health concerns at alarming rates. These challenges were higher for youth during the COVID-19 global pandemic, just as access to supports are limited – disproportionately so for those impacted by socioeconomic status and diversity indicators. Mentoring programs helped meet this need. Available across Canada these programs aim to match children and youth with caring adult mentors in order to improve wellbeing and foster long-term success. Through regular participation in educational, recreational and social activities mentoring relationships provide youth with human connection through support, companionship, and guidance. Yet, little Canadian based research is accessible to key mentoring stakeholders (i.e., other researchers, key decision makers, and mentor organizations). One of the main reasons for this is that mentoring researchers are not connected to one another in any formalized way. Thus, the purpose of the current project is to develop a repository of current Canadian-based mentoring research, connect researchers, and foster the development of interdisciplinary research teams.

Exploring the benefits and risks associated with online preparation resources for situational judgment tests

Selecting the right person for a job or admitting the right individual into a medical school of similar professional program is an important but complex task. Decision-makers rely on assessment tools to help them know more about the knowledge, skills, and abilities of potential applicants before they make their choices. The Casper test by Acuity Insight is one such tools, which is used by schools in Canada and around the world to assess thousands of applicants every year.
Because performing well on that test can be the difference between being admitted into (or rejected from) an attractive program, applicants sometimes invest a lot of time and money preparing themselves. This might involve relying on advice and resources made available by the test provider, but also external ones (e.g., on social media platforms like Reddit, for-profit coaching or preparation companies, or via artificial intelligence). Yet, we do not know whether these external resources are beneficial or harmful to applicants. This project will explore this problem, relying on both in-depth analyses of the content available via such resources and an experiment testing the effectiveness of response strategies based on different types of resources.

Penstock air inlet performance during emergency closure

This project aims enhance the safety and reliability of hydropower systems by preventing the creation of significant sub-atmospheric pressures (i.e. vacuum) in penstocks during rapid dewatering events. Air-intake systems relieve vacuum conditions, but the 3D flow dynamics around these systems during emergency scenarios are not fully understood. The project will develop a comprehensive suite of computer-based flow models to simulate these conditions accurately, enhancing the design and redundancy of air-inlet systems in hydropower conduits.

Waste paper is considered to have no value, destined for landfills. There is significant potential to process this waste and convert it to value added carbon-based products that will be developed, tested, and produced, namely Biochar, activated carbon, and carbon electrodes. Biochar is used in the agriculture industry for soil remediation to promote plant growth, activated carbon is used for oil, air and water filtration, and carbon electrodes are used in lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
