We help establish long-term, mutually beneficial research partnerships between academic institutions and industry leaders.

Empowering the innovators of tomorrow requires several key elements: access to funding streams to fuel your research; mutually beneficial collaborative relationships with industry leaders; and exclusive opportunities for your students to apply their expertise to real-world research projects.

Mitacs can deliver all those things. And more.

Depending on the project and program, Mitacs can help you and your students access anywhere from $7,500 to $120,000 in competitive funding. Through Mitacs expansive professional network, you’ll also have the chance to connect with a wide array of organizations and develop new and exciting research partnerships. And with those two elements in place, your best and brightest students will be able to truly maximize their potential, taking their ideas from concept to reality.

Building Innovation Capacity

Where Canada’s innovation ecosystem builds strong foundations

Canada’s innovation ecosystem is rooted in academia with professors and students alike conceiving, developing, and testing ideas – from the evolutionary to the totally disruptive.

Mitacs’s programs in this category support those efforts through funding, talent development, training and retention, and helping researchers expand their networks to become the vanguard for cutting-edge innovation.

Other Funding Sources for Academic Research

Beyond Mitacs, there are numerous funding sources available to support academic research projects. The Government of Quebec and the Fonds de recherche du Québec also provide research grants for training projects or other research initiatives across various fields of study. These sources complement the grant programs offered by Mitacs, creating synergies that allow faculty members to diversify funding and enhance the impact of their research projects.

Universities such as the University of Montreal, including its international programs, also collaborate to support international projects and encourage global research outcomes. By submitting a project, professors can leverage these external funding opportunities and international partnerships to expand the reach and significance of their work.

How to Maximize Your Eligibility

It is essential to fully understand the eligibility requirements of any grant you wish to apply for. Multiple factors are considered when evaluating applications, including the relevance of the research proposed within the framework of the program, the potential research outcomes, and the quality of the grant application. Faculty members must ensure their applications meet the expectations of the review committee, which assesses projects according to strict criteria.

It is also crucial to submit a full application before the deadline to avoid missing any funding opportunities. Deadlines for grant applications vary depending on the objectives of the program, so we encourage you to prepare any forms and supporting documents in advance to ensure a complete submission on time.
