Circular Food Innovation Lab (CFIL)

The City of Vancouver has an aspirational goal to become a zero waste community by 2040, a goal that includes the development of a circular economy of food (CEF). A circular economy is where every material, including food, is used to its full extent and nothing is wasted or treated as garbage. Funding from Mitacs and the Carbon Neutral Cites Alliance is helping Vancouver move the dial on the circular economy of food. The City of Vancouver in collaboration with Vancouver Economic Commission’s Economic Transformation Lab will bring systems design interns from Emily Carr University of Art + Design together with Vancouver’s supply chain actors to find practical, innovative solutions to food waste. Tested on-the-floor by staff and managers these solutions will potentially inform new practices for a diverse range of sectors. This is ground breaking work that will be shared with Vancouver’s supply chain actor community and other cities regionally, nationally and internationally.

Une subjectivité en commun : entrelacs de l’intime et du collectif, de Simone de Beauvoir à Mathieu Riboulet

Comment rendre compte d’une expérience collective à partir de l’écriture de l’intime ? Telle est la question qui hante la lecture des œuvres de Simone de Beauvoir, de François Bon, d’Annie Ernaux, de Georges Perec et de Mathieu Riboulet. En entrecroisant leur mémoire personnelle à la mémoire collective, ces auteurs et autrices consignent une expérience de leur temps tout en réfléchissant à leur propre subjectivité. L’intrication de l’intime et du collectif dans les œuvres autobiographiques de Beauvoir, Bon, Ernaux, Perec et Riboulet, qui constituent le corpus principal, invite à s’interroger sur la constitution d’une subjectivité collective dans les écritures de soi contemporaines, dont témoignent également les récits d’Éric Chauvier, de Didier Eribon, d’Ivan Jablonka et de Leslie Kaplan, étudiés en corpus secondaire. La mise en partage des mémoires – personnelles et collectives du XXe siècle français – révèle le caractère insuffisant du « je » seul pour se raconter, car le soi n’est jamais totalement dissocié d’une communauté. Pour définir ce qu’est une subjectivité collective, il faudra d’abord s’attacher à comment se constitue une subjectivité en lien avec une collectivité.

Période d’essais et de raffinement du prototype ergocycle semi-allongé (vélo) intelligent (TRIVEL)

La technologie est maintenant bien présente dans les divers espaces de vie et elle est utilisée pour la réadaptation des personnes ayant des problèmes suite à des maladies ou traumatismes. Ce projet testera un premier prototype de vélo intelligent auprès des clients (patients et personnes en santé) et cliniciens. Le vélo intelligent, en plus d’offrir un visuel stimulant de type jeux vidéo, permettra aux utilisateurs de s’entraîner selon leurs capacités et préférences grâce à l’IA. Une première étape du développement est d’évaluer les effets sur les muscles des jambes et sur les efforts du coeur et de recueillir les commentaires des personnes qui pédalent avec les divers modules d’entrainement du vélo. Grâce à ce projet, le partenaire pourra décider des modes de pédalage à intégrer au vélo et il aura aussi des informations sur la capacité du vélo intelligent à déterminer les capacités de pédalage du client pour personnaliser son entrainement. La deuxième étude fournira des données d’utilisateurs cliniciens, elle apportera des informations intéressantes, entre autres sur l’utilisabilité potentielle en clinique du produit.

Recherche du mécanisme impliqué dans l’internalisation et le recyclage du récepteur CD36 suite à la liaison par les azapeptides

L’objectif premier de cette étude vise à étudier le devenir, à l’intérieur d’une cellule dérivée de globules blancs sanguins, d’une protéine (appelée récepteur) qui joue un rôle important dans la progression de l’athérosclérose. Comprendre comment cette protéine circule dans la cellule et comment cette circulation peut être modulée par des médicaments anti-athérosclérotiques potentiels (les azapeptides) est nécessaire pour expliquer non seulement leur mécanisme d’action mais aussi leur durée d’action.

Afin de répondre à cet objectif, la candidate travaillera avec des lignées cellulaires comme modèle d’une cellule appelée macrophage. Le récepteur d’intérêt (appelé CD36) sera marqué avec une sonde fluorescente et son internalisation, de même que son recyclage, en absence et en présence de médicaments seront étudiés. Ainsi, la candidate utilisera les technique de culture cellulaire, de transfection, de pharmacologie (dose-réponse des azapeptides) et de détection par fluorescence.

DHMG General Services Expansion Internship

My main project is the conceptualization, creation, and continuous refinement of my Digital Marketing Masterclass workshops. These workshops are designed to further educate and empower the C-suite, senior technical and strategic management, and the employees of “digital-forward” businesses. There is a huge gap in education currently with regards to what is available for current and new marketing professionals, and what is required operationally as a business in 2021. Covid, lockdowns, digital behaviors, privacy concerns – the list goes on.
As this application has developed, I have found myself with an equally exciting additional opportunity. I have partnered with a Saskatchewan-based venture capital firm to help strengthen the digital marketing arm of their accelerator program for growing start-ups. We are modeling early conversations around Clearco and GrowthX – I highly recommend looking into these businesses as they have proven to be extremely successful in a short period of time.
As these start-ups are most often composed of small teams wearing many hats, my business has the opportunity to provide and teach essential marketing skills across a broad spectrum of topics/areas. In essence, it is a natural starting point for the course mentioned above, with ample opportunity for further work beyond the course.

Intelligent dynamic and predictive landing system for marine aerial vehicles to enable ship- and water-based operations

This project further develops and implements unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) autonomous landing on underway ships in a sea state under zero visibility (Canadian Arctic operations). The was developed, implemented, and verified by Dalhousie University on an experimental UAV to TRL 4.
The present project’s objective is to also implement the verified capabilities on an UAV (SHR F4) that is a product of a wholly-owned Canadian company. As well, the UAV autonomous landing capabilities will undergo further R&D so their UAV can land on rafts comparable to the UAV’s footprint and then directly on the water. The final product will undergo over-the-water tests, in phases, that transition from large indoor tanks with sea states to at-sea on boats and rafts.
The so enabled SHR F4 distinguishes SeaHawk Robotics from other COTS UAVs with its ability to land autonomously on ships and water very taxing conditions. To the best of the teams’ knowledge there is presently no such UAV abilities for marine applications.

An Omnigenic Hypothesis to Predict Human Gene Regulatory Networks

The project mainly focuses on the cellular behaviour and ways to predict human gene interactions. Using a method called Proteinfragment
Complementation Assays, we are able to compute the biochemical networks in living cells. The results of this project will
provide a novel and highly efficient way to establish hypotheses about the organization of cellular regulatory networks.
We will assign the scores for each drug onto the corresponding protein nodes of different human protein interaction networks.
Then, using a heat diffusion network propagation method, we will determine whether results reproduce known regulatory circuits,
such as signaling pathway. These scores will be applied to different directed and non-directed networks. We will also extract the
human network and assign weights to the 17,300 proteins and using the NAGA pipelines, we perform heat diffusion network
propagation. Mapping regulatory networks for each drug will be performed with the starting state of the network sets the edges to
values. Resulting networks will be tested for recovery of human disease-associated allergies.
This study will be the first to map human protein interactions and will help us in understanding how the environment and the
genome interact with each other.

Élaboration d’un plan régional de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre pour la Gaspésie

L’objectif de ce projet de recherche est de développer une approche permettant de cibler les principaux secteurs
responsables des émissions de GES de la région de la Gaspésie, et d’identifier des pistes de solution à intégrer
dans un plan d’action régional contre les changements climatiques. L’approche développée pourra être appliquée
à d’autres régions dans le futur. Il est essentiel que chaque région dresse un portrait représentatif de ses
principales sources d’émissions de GES afin de définir des pistes d’action pouvant contribuer efficacement à
l’atteinte des cibles fixées par la province. En plus de permettre une estimation plus précise des émissions de
GES, la prise en compte des spécificités régionales facilitera l’identification des synergies possibles entre les
secteurs économiques en place pour l’élaboration de mesures de réduction d’émissions de GES plus efficaces et
contribuant à la vitalité de la collectivité locale.

Wireless subsurface soil sensor network

The project will test new data transmitting technology as equipment for measuring such soil physical characteristics as temperature, humidity and CO2. Data transmitted both wirelessly (through the air) and below the soil surface at different depths will be determined. Apart from this, it is expected that measurements from soil freezing and thawing cycles will be recorded and analyzed to learn about the effects of these cycles in other soil processes. It is expected that this new data transmission technology will be applied to various agricultural and environmental projects to allow easier data collection to help in understanding and predicting soil conditions in order to develop more accurate adaptation and resiliency plans.

A review of affordable housing benefits

Ontario, Canada has an extreme lack of affordable housing. This study intends to encourage holistic planning by understanding the community benefits of affordable housing projects. The goal of the project is to create an assessment framework which can be used by municipalities and housing organizations to value the benefits of affordable housing projects. These benefits are categorized as social, environmental, and economic benefits within the community. This framework is being provided to encourage practitioners to efficiently allocate project funding, understand and communicate the benefits of projects, and advocate for additional funding because of the benefits in other areas. UPRC will act as a case study to implement the framework and understand the impact the projects have in the surrounding communities.

La collaboration école-famille: Quels effets sur la réussite des garçons et des filles vulnérables à l’entrée à l’école?

Au Québec, 12% des enfants qui entrent à l’école présentent des vulnérabilités sur les plans social ou affectif. Ces enfants, majoritairement des garçons, sont à risque de vivre des difficultés scolaires persistantes, et ce, même s’ils ont de bonnes habiletés cognitives. La collaboration école-famille fait partie des éléments qui peuvent aider ces enfants à bien réussir une fois à l’école. Ce projet vise à déterminer dans quelle mesure la collaboration école-famille contribue à la réussite scolaire des garçons et des filles, dont ceux ayant des vulnérabilités sur les plans social et affectif. Les retombées pour l’organisme partenaire, la Fondation pour les élèves du Centre de services scolaire de la Région-de-Sherbrooke, sont nombreuses. Les résultats du stage permettront d’informer les professionnels enseignants et les parents sur les dimensions du partenariat avec les familles les plus associées à la réussite scolaire, et de les sensibiliser au partenariat école-famille-communauté pour la réussite des enfants.

The Economic Impact, Social, and Public Value of MedicAlert Foundation Canada (MAFCA)

In Canada, about 1 in every 3 Canadians has a medical condition, or takes medication, that would be important
to know about in an emergency situation. That’s why, since 1961, Medic Alert Foundation Canada (MAFCA) has
helped to protect over 1 million Canadians by helping first responders and healthcare providers get access to
health information quickly. However, though the work of MAFCA is undoubtedly important, we do not yet
understand the full impact or value of this work. For this reason, to fully realize the benefits of MAFCA to
Canadians, this research project will seek to evaluate the economic impact of MAFCA’s work as well as the extent
of public value for MAFCA. Through this research, we believe that MAFCA will be better equipped to help expand
the MAFCA program to more Canadians.
