The First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv) is researching medicinal plants in a unique way — by pairing students with knowledge keepers who know these traditional plants intimately. Biotechnology researcher Ana Karime, Mitacs Globalink Research Intern from Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, is working virtually with Dr. Vincent Ziffle, assistant professor of chemistry at FNUniv and consulting closely with Elder Archie Weenie from Sweetgrass First Nation to research medicinal properties of seven common Mexican plants and analzye their biochemistry to understand how they can be used for treatment.
