Manish Goel from India follows in the footsteps of his university colleague by coming to Canada through Mitacs Globalink
“I was inspired by one of my colleagues at university who was part of the program last year and now promotes it in India. I was lucky enough to be selected to come here to Canada for research into leukemia in children.”
Manish is about to begin his final year of studies for a Bachelor of Technology degree with a major in Biotechnology and a minor in Computer Science at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.
His experience in cloning, computational biology and programming made him the perfect fit for his Globalink research project, where he’s working under Dr. Brian Wilhelm at the Université de Montréal’s Department of Medicine.
“The lab I’m working in is researching the DNA sequence of Acute Myeloid Leukemia and looking at genes involved in Leukemia and what are the consequences of different mutations of these genes on cell growth. The objective of my project is to find out what gene mutations may lead to leukemia development to better understand the plausible causes of the disease. The aim of my project involves functionally validating the role of genes in order to better understand leukemia and develop treatment for this disease.”
“My research is a small part of a much bigger project which will help scientists understand the role of genetic mutations underlying the disease, which could ultimately lead to better treatment options.”
When Manish returns home to India, he will focus on finishing the final year of his bachelor degree, but wants to return to Canada for graduate studies.
“I plan to pursue my Masters and, if given the opportunity, I’d like to return to Canada to complete that here.
“Montreal is fantastic. I spend weekends exploring the city, hiking and visiting museums. I’m really enjoying my time here however the weather is much colder than back at home, so that is one thing I’ve had to adjust to!”
