Cyber Security threats in Database backups

Digital commerce platforms these days collect trillions of data points of their customers and users, which are stored in database tables for a limited period. In Canada itself, there are 27 million eCommerce users that accounting to 75% of the Canadian population (International Trade Administration, 2022)
Hackers constantly attempt to isolate and target vulnerabilities not only in the databases as well as in the database backups being generated causing a threat to the USD 35.50Bn industry. Cyber attacks have affected more than 78% of companies in Canada and companies are spending more than 11.1% of their total IT budgets on cyber security. (O’DRISCOLL, 2022)
Over the past few years more than databases, the backup is becoming more vulnerable even than the databases themselves. Most of the issues revolve around improper encryption of database backups. Monitoring and testing of database backups is also an issue as it requires effort and money (Goolsby, 2020)
Hence, database-backup thefts, and intrusions have become very common in recent years. Even with so many encryption techniques available, database backups are still vulnerable. The painstaking issue is the backup techniques of databases which are still weak and constantly ignored during database management.
