Given the public health-care system in Canada, many drugs are paid through by the provincial drug
plans. Our government makes decisions on which drug to pay for through a process known as health
technology assessment whereby manufacturers submit a document that details the clinical, economic
and other aspects (e.g. ethical, social) relating to their drug.
Within the economic section of this document, an economic model is constructed to evaluate medical
alternatives. The goal of any economic model is to provide an accurate and reliable comparison
between competing drugs in terms of their costs and clinical outcomes. Currently, a global economic
model has been constructed for a drug called ulipristal acetate for the management of uterine fibroids.
However, to make drug funding decisions, Canadian policy-makers will require a model that reflects
Canadian practices. Therefore, in this internship, the objective is to evaluate the existing global
economic model and make the necessary changes to convert the model to a Canadian perspective.,,,TOBECONT’D
