What are (elite) Friends for? Exploring the Dynamics of CEO Peer Groups: Motivations, Benefits, and Impacts

This project explores the role of peer groups in shaping the identity of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and its implications for both personal and professional outcomes. Specifically, it aims to examine how participation in peer group mentoring influences CEOs’ identity construction and, in turn, their strategic decision-making, leadership practices, and risk-taking. With this research, we aim to generate knowledge with both academic and practical value. Academically, our goal is to deepen understanding of CEOs’ identity dynamics, focusing on the identity-related outcomes for both CEOs and their organizations. Practically, by revealing the often-hidden dynamics within CEO peer groups, we intend to provide actionable insights for organizations, including our partner Entrechefs, mentors, and CEOs, supporting the development of more effective support and training programs.
