Decking is a flooring material used outdoors in both residential and non-residential sectors. The decking market is important for Canadian companies who manufacture 300 million lineal feet of decking each year. However, this important market is declining because of the emergence of products made from plastic. These plastic products maintain their appearance better than wood […]

Fucoidan is a polysaccharide found in brown algae (seaweed). ARC Medical Devices Inc. markets fucoidan purified from brown algae for post-surgical veterinary use to reduce interorgan adhesion development. This product works very effectively, prompting a desire to develop a similar product for use in humans. The challenge to this, however, is that fucoidan is an […]

The project will deal with the identification of the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of a series of untested composite materials manufactured by Zerocor. By undergoing rigorous mechanical, thermal, and electrical testing, a database of properties for these materials can be constructed. Comparing these properties with the materials’ microscopic internal structure, one can establish structure-property […]

A zinc coating is commonly used on structural steels to prevent corrosion. The structure is dipped in a hot bath of liquid zinc, which when cooled, provides to protective layer. However, after the coating process, cracking has been found in the welded joints of the structural steel. The proposed research aims to determine the cause […]

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural nano biomaterial, which has been investigated for a broad range of applications ranging from headphone diaphragm to wound dressing and medical implant. We will investigate a recently discovered facultative bacterium for BC production. This bacterium has the potential of increasing the efficiency of BC production by more than ten […]

With the rapid development of computing and sensing technologies, such as ubiquitous wireless sensor networks, the amount of data from dissimilar sensors and social media have has been increasing at a rate beyond using traditional tools to analyze. Big data poses interesting information and requires different tools in various layers of the multi-sensor decision support […]

The loss of insulin producing ?-cells in the pancreatic islets (clusters of cells containing ?-cells) contributes to elevated blood glucose levels, which is a characteristic of diabetes. Development of therapeutic approaches that focus on prevention of ?-cell loss or promoting ?-cell proliferation is therefore of great importance. Studies performed in this project to-date (first internship […]

Obesity and diabetes are a significant global burden and there is an immediate need for novel treatments and management strategies. Our lab has shown that an avocadoderived lipid is a potent inhibitor of fatty acid oxidation (i.e., the cellular breakdown of fat for energy) which reduces mouse weight gain without toxicity. Inhibition of fatty acid […]

Both ?-lipoic acid (ALPHA-LA) and Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) are used to control many diseases due to their antioxidant . We have evidence indicating if the two compounds are chemically attached, superior pharmaceutical properties are achieved. These evidence have resulted in a patent that gives the sponsoring Company exclusivity on its use. The proposed project is developed […]
