The development and testing of a comprehensive app associated multi-input database

Digital apps represent an important avenue to promote health across individuals with chronic disease. There can be multiple data inputs about a user that come into a health app. During the course of this Mitacs project, the student will develop and evaluate a comprehensive database that is able to organize data from various health data inputs (e.g. from wearable devices, other apps or surveys) for a health research app. This data will be organized into a usable format so that it can inform the tailored delivery of interventions for patients who use the app.

The project aims to educate the car dealership market, so they adapt to the use of an AI-CRM in their businesses, from creating blogs with educational content, interviews with the key market players, etc. The intern will help research the car dealerships market with the prospect of CRM adaptation in the operation and management of car dealerships. Strong communication and writing skills are expected, as the intern will interact with prospects and customers, and will create educational blog content.

Facilitation of early mobilization after colorectal surgery: a randomized controlled trial

There is growing evidence that outcomes after colorectal surgery are improved with the use of perioperative interventions combined into an enhanced recovery program (ERP). Encouraging patients to achieve specific daily nutrition and mobilization goals postoperatively is an important aspect of ERPs; however, it is not known whether the achievement of these goals needs to be facilitated by a member of the healthcare team. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which postoperative recovery is influenced by facilitation of nutrition and mobility. The evidence obtained from this study has the potential to optimize resource utilization by indicating whether patients can selfmanage postoperative mobilization and nutrition; or by suggesting the need to have a team member dedicated to facilitate this aspect of care. Our partner (Codivien) is a global healthcare products company committed to invest in research focused on improving delivery of care and outcomes of surgical technology.

Impacts of new amendments on wheat growth and soil health of a Black Chernozemic soil

The proposed project objective is to conduct a field study on an acidic soil located at the Battle River Research Group site near Galahad, Alberta. The study will focus on the effects of land application of materials such as biochar, wood ash and sugar beet sludge lime on reducing acidity of the soil, and effects on wheat health and soil health. The materials applied to land are considered waste materials that are often disposed in landfills, and if that continues will put more pressure on land resources needed to build more landfills. These materials may be useful in correcting acidic soils and providing important nutrients for plant growth. This will benefit the Battle River Research Group with knowledge gained on whether land application of these materials, often considered as wastes, could be a feasible, low-cost option for correcting soil acidity problems compared to agricultural lime and if that could improve wheat growth and overall soil health.

Architecture résiliente aux inondations : développement d’expertise et transfert de connaissances

Le projet génèrera des connaissances sur les mesures d’adaptation du cadre bâti aux inondations à l’échelle des bâtiments et des communautés. Ce projet comble un manque d’information sur les manières d’habiter et de planifier les zones inondables constructibles au Québec.
L’analyse de cas de défaillance de mesures de protection contre les inondations permettra le développement d’outils de communication destinés à sensibiliser les parties prenantes au risque potentiel. La modélisation de typologies architecturales adaptées à différents scénarios d’inondation contribuera aux réflexions entourant la conception de la résilience des communautés aux inondation.
Les contributions des stagiaires s’inscrivent dans un des objectifs du programme de résilience diluvienne d’ASFQ : valoriser le rôle de l’architecture dans la protection du cadre bâti contre les impacts des changements climatiques. ASFQ utilisera les connaissances colligées et outils co-développés par le ou la stagiaire lors d’activités de communication grand public et de formation professionnelle sur l’adaptation du cadre bâti aux inondations.

Technical and financial feasibility of employing cutting-edge solar technologies and design strategies in the retrofit of large commercial buildings

The proposed project aims at exploring the technical and financial feasibility of employing cutting-edge solar technologies and design strategies in the retrofit of large commercial buildings, and application to a case study in Schefferville. The research consists of two main design 1) incorporating commonly existing PV panels into Rainscreen cladding, to act as the outer protective layer of a retrofitted building envelope; and 2) explore the envelope design a rooftop greenhouse to integrate Semi-transparent PV panels. Extensive review of existing technologies will be conducted, and analysis of implementation within the mentioned envelope systems, in terms of energy generation potential, impact on the building energy performance, and life cycle cost assessment as compared to existing envelope systems. This project will assist the partners Gestion Schefferville Inc. in addressing the challenge of developing accurate lifecycle cost and energy assessment of various technologies in the retrofit of commercial building including hotels.

Benevity is a global leader in workplace giving and volunteering solutions. Benevity’s flagship product “Spark” is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) application which allows users to engage in their company’s donation and volunteering programs through a web or mobile application. It is common for our clients to run events or campaigns where they would like to collect donations, but this is not easily possible using our existing SaaS application.
For this project, we will leverage modern internet-connected credit card payment technologies to expose Benevity’s powerful donation processing platform via a simple “tap to donate” device, which can be configured for a specific amount and for a specific charity. The device can be left out with accompanying signage anywhere there is an internet connection, and individuals can simply tap to make a quick donation.

Developmental potential of oocytes after cryopreservation Year Two

Oocyte cryopreservation is imperative for assisted reproductive technologies (ART). It offers cancer patients to preserve their oocytes for future fertilization, flexibility in the timing of infertility treatment, and the potential for establishing oocyte banking. However, the currently available protocol is limited because the oocytes after cryopreservation have lower ability to develop into viable embryos (developmental competence) compared to unfrozen oocytes. The aim of proposed study is to improve the conditions of oocyte cryopresrvation which subsequently result in an increase in oocyte competence. This aim will be achieved by supplementing the cryopreservation medium with substances, known to play roles in oocyte metabolism, energy production, and oxidative stress prevention, and testing subsequent oocyte development into embryos by using murine models. The established protocol will be used to improve human oocyte cryopreservation technology at the Montreal Reproductive Center (MRC).

Integrate Goodness Capabilities into Microsoft Teams

Benevity is a global leader in workplace giving and volunteering solutions. Benevity’s flagship product “Spark” is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) application which allows users to access a catalog of “goodness content”, which consists of giving and volunteering opportunities associated with registered charitable organizations. One of the ongoing challenges Benevity faces, as do many content platforms, is encouraging users to return to the platform to engage with the content. One strategy is to “push the content to where the users are”. For Benevity, this means exposing content from our platform via APIs so that they can be discovered from within third-party applications where users are spending their time, such as collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and Slack. For this project, we will build an integration with Microsoft Teams to allow users to discover and interact with the catalog of Benevity’s goodness content. The expected outcome is increased user participation and engagement in the company’s workplace giving and volunteering program.
