Digital Projects Coordinator

This will be my second term as the Digital Projects Coordinator at the Arts Club Theatre Company, Western Canada’s largest theatre company. In the role, I plan to work cross-departmentally and aid departments with digital strategy. I work on short-term digital projects, like social media graphics, and newsletters, as well as help in the planning of long term monetized projects like their Podcast seres. I am working in the Development Department, so much of what I do is with the goal of engaging donors and spreading awareness of the other programs the Arts Club offers besides its in person shows.

Sounding Out the “Early” Applicability of Health Economics (HE) and Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Considerations in the Drug Development Process

With the imminent emergence of personalized medicine and the availability of costly targeted drugs comes the crucial allocation of ressources within the halthcare systems. Determining which treatment options should be funded has become an increasingly difficult task. Decision-makers are relying heavily on pharmacoeconomic (PE) evalutions to decide which of them will be most effective and safe—but also, which will most improve the quality of life of patients and which will be most valued by society. Unfortunately, such considerations come later in the drug development process where most product-related decisions have already been made. This project seeks to examine the early application of HE and HTA by investigating related tools that could be implemented earlier at the R&D and preclinical phase where funds at the very forefront of innovation seek to invest. Venture capital firms like AmorChem will benefit by gaining such insight on their investments in that they can more concretely ensure commercial viability in the face of pharma, health-care systems and payers.

Low-cost complex genome assembly and annotation

There is a pressing need to apply genomics-based tools for rapidly evaluating the impact of industrial and municipal waste management practices and climate change. In order to do this, information about the genome from relevant North American species is needed, yet acquiring these complex genome sequences had been cost and resource prohibitive until recently. Working together with the partner, the intern will develop a low-cost method for generating complex genome assemblies and annotation that is desperately needed. The target species will be the bullfrog, a global frog species that represents the largest frog family, and is regarded as a “wet canary in the coalmine”. The intern’s involvement will provide essential biochemical and biological knowledge to the project. The developed methods will facilitate the creation of new BC-based jobs, and translate to novel environmental monitoring and assessment tools that will be adopted by environmental consulting firms and regulatory agencies.

Apprentissage automatique pour prédire le temps de charge et la consommation d’un véhicule électrique

L’objectif de ce projet de recherche est de déterminer avec précision le temps nécessaire pour recharger un véhicule électrique d’un pourcentage X à un pourcentage Y en utilisant des données historiques fournies par AddÉnergie. Il sera également évalué s’il est possible d’utiliser ces données historiques pour développer un modèle permettant de prédire la consommation d’un véhicule électrique pour un trajet donné. Les avantages escomptés pour AddÉnergie sont l’utilisation de ces modèles pour améliorer l’expérience client. Cela permettrait, entre-autres, de prédire avec précision le temps nécessaire pour charger de X % à Y % ou la quantité d’énergie récupérée en chargeant pour une durée déterminée ou encore afficher en temps réel à l’utilisateur les bornes qu’il peut atteindre depuis sa position actuelle.

Microfluidic Hydrogel-based Biomolecule Detection Through Novel Advection Transport

Healthcare requires the early and accurate detection of disease indicators, be they small biomolecules or viruses, which is vital for successful treatments, preventative medicine and disease prevention. Improving turnaround times for early and accurate detection will improve patient care, enable the mass screening of large populations during outbreaks and effectively reduce the diagnostic burden. We have developed a small-scale filter detection device to provide high sensitivity, while being inexpensive and portable for diagnostics at the point of care. Our device can be scaled to detect multiple biomolecules using established paradigms that are used in current standards of quantifications of proteins and other biomolecules in blood, for example, by antibody binding. Antibodies are highly specific and strong binders of unique molecule surfaces, and we have devised a novel way of implementing them for detection, using a secondary fluorescent reporter.

Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE)-based Framework for Net-Zero Home Construction- Wilden Living Lab (Phase II)

The proposed study will focus on extending the Wilden Living Lab (WLL) Research Program by constructing a net-zero house (as the third house of the program) with new material combinations and construction practice. A post occupancy evaluation will be conducted to identify cost-effective material selection tools for building energy-efficient detached homes. Accordingly, a net-zero house will be built in collaboration with the partners, and the user behavioral data will be monitored and assessed for the next 3 years. The partners can utilize research findings to deploy necessary energy-efficiencies and best management practices within their community and beyond. The WLL online platform can be used to push research results to the industry and enhance the knowledge of the local and provincial construction industry.
