Diagnostic sectoriel et portrait des entrepreneurs forestiers au Québec

Les dirigeants de petites et moyennes entreprises forestières, aussi appelés entrepreneurs forestiers, sont au coeur du réseau de création de valeur du secteur forestier au Québec. Il s’avère important d’actualiser nos connaissances sur le sujet, car la situation du secteur forestier a grandement évolué depuis le début des année 2010, par exemple le secteur fait face à une pénurie criante d’entrepreneurs et de travailleurs qui met en péril la performance des usines et de l’aménagement des forêts au Québec.
Ce projet propose la mise en place d’une étude rigoureuse mettant à contribution les méthodes scientifiques qui permettront de mettre à jour nos connaissances des problématiques de main-d’oeuvre et d’emploi du secteur forestier ainsi que d’identifier un plan d’action en entrepreneuriat forestier. À la clé, un tel projet contribuera au développement de stratégies favorisant un réseau de création de valeur plus performant pour l’ensemble de la filière forestière canadienne.

Activity recognition and workload estimation algorithm development using the Kinetyx SI insole system

Smart devices can allow active individuals to monitor their training workload in order to reduce injuries and improve performance. However, many devices are geared towards a single activity, which limits their impact. Kinetyx recently developed an insole with multiple sensors that can be worn within a shoe while performing many activities. Using this insole, we will develop algorithms that identify different activities and provide feedback on the workload from those activities. Creating algorithms to turn the Kinetyx insole into a smart insole has the potential to reduce overuse injury risks and improve performance so that people can stay active and healthy.

Deep Roots Food Hub is a pioneer non-profit organization comprising of a passionate team of local farmers, market gardeners, health professionals, businesspeople, and residents that aims to create a secure, sustainable food system. Food security is important now more than ever due to the impacts Covid 19 had on supply chains, putting Canadians at risk. Innovative methods and thinking like food cellars can minimize the strain and dependency for importing food. With an intern, Deep Roots Food Hub can better understand the farming industry by conducting interviews with farmers, researching the current economics of the Ontario food chain, better understanding the stakeholders in this industry and identifying how the food cellar can meet their needs.The intern will explore the following and provide deliverables on each.
• Examine the agriculture market in West Carleton (Ottawa, Ontario) and the food supply chain
o Interviewing farmers
o Secondary research
• Identify ways to utilize the food storage cellar (reaching close to optimal/max capacity)
• Outline stakeholders and how they would benefit from the use of a food cellar
• Explore the option of year-round CSAs (Consumer supplier agreements)
• Develop a marketing and business plan for Deep Roots Food Hub
• Create fundraising plan for Deep Roots Food Hub (if time allows)

As part of the student’s on-boarding process, we will undertake a strategic analysis of the current business as it stands on that day (e.g., SWOT, PESTEL). Minds in Motion: Evaluating Impacts and Guiding Progress

The Minds in Motion Initiative (MIMI) is a community-based project run by Waterloo Regional Homes for Mental Health, Inc. This initiative has three main goals: to assist mental health consumers in the recovery process by providing access to physical health activities, to raise awareness in the community at large about mental health issues, and to provide a unique walking race experience for athletes and amateurs alike. The study will evaluate the impacts of this project on well-being through the collection and analysis of both numerical and narrative data from key participants in MIMI. The project will be guided by a steering committee composed of consumers of mental health services, their family members, staff members of Waterloo Regional Homes, and members of the community at large. This research aims to contribute both to the development of MIMI and to the literature regarding community-based mental health.

Low Carbon Cities Canada (LC3) is a network of seven cities across Canada supported by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Modeled on The Atmospheric Fund in Toronto, the LC3 approach provides the capacity, capital, and risk tolerance necessary to remove barriers to the adoption of new technologies,
policies, and financial tools that can significantly reduce urban carbon emissions. Alberta Ecotrust will participate in the network through the establishment of the Climate Innovation Fund, with programs provided in both Calgary and Edmonton. The focus of activities for this project will primarily be to support the launch of the Climate Innovation Fund (CIF) and the development of the CIF Program Framework.
