A novel analgesic in a surgical model of osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of joint disease affecting over 80% of the human

population above 75 years old and burdening health organizations worldwide. Osteoarthritis is

characterized by progressive joint degeneration resulting in chronic pain and loss of joint

function. Currently there is no cure for osteoarthritis; available treatments are only symptomatic

targeting pain and are associated with significant side effects, emphasizing the need for new

treatments.

Isovaline is a novel analgesic which showed remarkable effects in several pain models

without producing central nervous system side effects. The current study will examine the

analgesic profile of isovaIine in mice; we will assess the efficacy of isovaIine in alleviating the

signs of osteoarthritis and restoring the ability of the mice which underwent surgical

destabilization of the knee joint to exercise voluntarily. The effect of isovaline will be compared

to dicIofenac, and morphine the currently drugs of choice for osteoarthritic pain.

Characterization of powder materials for additive manufacturing (3D printing ability) using machine learning methods

Metal additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D Printing, is a technology that produces three-dimensional metallic parts layer by layer as opposed to conventional subtractive techniques. The qualities of 3D parts are significantly influenced by the characteristics of the feedstock materials, which depend on the manufacturing processes and also vary between batches. Powder pack density and flowability are often used to evaluate the 3D printability of the powder. The two metrics are currently determined by experiments and/or numerical simulations. However, the existed methods are often time/labor consuming due to the repeated sampling/testing processes and/or generate poor knowledge in the predictions of a new powder batch due to the sophisticated physics behind particle contact/interaction. The machine learning (ML) methods, especially deep learning (DL) method has already been widely used in object detection and segmentation. In particular, neural networks (NNs) are able to learn the relationship between the input features and output targets based on previous data. Compared with traditional methods (experiments and simulations), ML methods feature high objectivity and prediction accuracy and efficiency. Once the dataset between powder characteristics and processing is established, ML can realize in-situ monitoring of powder characteristics and real-time control the powder manufacturing processes.

Business Strategy internship

My role as an Intern is to create, in collaboration with Reid, an effective go to market (customer acquisition) strategy. I will evaluate and prioritize a list of potential new-customer generating techniques and will work with the Reid on an implementation strategy and schedule. This strategy will include a content creation and delivery component to drive long-term organic traffic to the Aquatell website. Other potential components include social media development, paid ads, and the augmenting of the Aquatell product catalog. Some of my key projects include combing through historical Google Analytics data to create a list of marketing content pieces that will attract new customers. My main focus will be content creation so over the course of the internship author a total of 50 marketing content pieces, each with associated graphics, and queue these on our website content management system (Shopify) so that we launch one piece a week for the following 50 weeks. Then I will be modifying these same content pieces and queue them for Facebook & Instagram release. The next task will be identifying product catalog opportunities for our Canadian, U.S., and Australian websites and work with manufacturers to acquire product copy, imagery, and specifications.

KDS Sale Strategy

Kings Distributed Systems (“Kings”) is a Canadian corporation with the mission to make computing more affordable, secure, and interoperable. Its core offering is a software platform that makes running modern applications cheap and easy through a global ‘marketplace’ for computing resources. In May 2020, a consortium led by Kings was awarded $2.2m to build a COVID-19 modelling and decision support platform called Project Looking Glass. Funded by Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster, Looking Glass allows municipalities to forecast the spread of COVID-19 in their community given local datasets, as well as the costs & benefits of various mitigation strategies. Before its completion in Q4 2020, Kings must learn which are the best municipal audiences to approach and build an effective process for doing so. This Mitacs project will engage an experienced sales professional and master’s candidate from Queen’s University to achieve this. By doing so before the platform launches, Kings hopes to implement it across a larger number of municipalities in a shorter amount of time and reduce the cost of doing so. The company looks forward to this 16-week opportunity to grow its business while protecting the health and well-being of the Canadian public.
