The utility of ergonomic monitoring on affecting health behavior in the workplace

Smartpods, located in Dieppe, New Brunswick, have developed a new product “the Pulse Quest”. The Pulse Quest is a digital monitoring technology that transforms an ordinary electric adjustable desk into a “smart” desk. Not only does the Pulse Quest automate the movement of the sit stand desk, it simultaneously collects data on a battery of employee health measures. This project would bring together the research expertise from Dr. Cardoso’s Laboratoire de Performance Occupationnel (LPO) (l’Université de Moncton), Dr. Albert’s Occupational Performance Laboratory (OPL) (University of New Brunswick) and Smartpods. The research partnership proposes a series of research projects associated with the analysis of the rich data provided by the Pulse Quest technology. There are two main themes to the research: 1) how employees modify behavior with the presence of the Pulse Quest as a part of their workstation; and 2) how the Pulse quest can be used to promote healthy behaviors in the workplace.

Investigating contaminant-related health effects in killer whales (Orcinus orca) using omics

Resident killer whale populations in British Columbia (BC) are listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) as “threatened” and “endangered” for the northern and southern populations, respectively. Common pollutants such as PCBs and PBDEs, are considered a significant impediment to the recovery of resident killer whales. These chemicals bioaccumulate throughout the food web and strongly affect apex predators in marine ecosystems. We aim to quantify the concentrations of these chemicals in killer whale blubber tissue and assess markers of associated health risks using molecular based approaches. The data generated will allow us to identify genes that are affected by chemical exposure and provide insights to health impacts in killer whales. With this information, recommendations can be made to regulators to improve management plans.

Adaptive multi-horizon models for probabilistic demand forecasting

This project aims to develop an itinerary demand forecasting model that can handle long-term and short-term forecasting and adjust its parameters under changing situations. General long-term prediction models are relatively precise because the context often remains stationary over time, but can not quickly adapt to unforeseen events, like the global pandemics. It is necessary to develop an adaptive model with multi-horizon perspectives. The model will integrate external data sources to output a plausible range of future booking status. With the
understanding and results achieved by this project, accurate and real-time improvement solutions could be proposed and implemented. Therefore, it makes economic sense to understand the customer’s travel behaviors and then adjust the retail practices if unforeseen events occur. This project is expected to produce practical results benefiting the public in improved customer experience, increased incomes, analysis of COVID-19 impacts, etc.

Commetix – Mobile device commerce SaaS, Developer 2

The partner organization, Commetix Systems, has been in the business of mobile device repair and sales for over 5 years. They have a good understanding of the business requirements as well as the shortcomings of existing software currently used within the industry.
Many commercial websites such as Shopify do not allow the sale of mobile devices because of their association with the Stripe payment system. Commetix Systems is creating an online SaaS application that is specific to servicing mobile commerce, helping their clients to easily build customizable commercial website that allow them to conduct business online. The websites will include basic features which allow customers to view/filter merchandise and make purchases. Clients will have access to a dashboard which provides inventory tracking, access to a pooled or network inventory, business reports and the ability to edit information and themes used in the website. To gain a competitive edge, a unique feature not available on other platforms that will be developed is to allow for phone trade-ins.
A preliminary version of the application has been developed with frontend components for some of the basic features, but is lacking a backend database and API (application programming interface) to connect them.

The Bibliothèque de la Pléiade: The Social History of the Making of Cultural Goods and “Literary Giants”

This project aims to examine — through “la Bibliothèque de la Pléiade”, the French publishing world’s most prestigious book collection made of Bible paper, leather cover, and gold — the relation between the choices made to publish some literary works and the formation of “literary giants”, considered authors that achieve the status of being called “classics”. Although it pledges to democratize reading, this book series counts only two authors of Afro-European descent. It also has a smattering of works by female authors: of the 250 authors in la Pléiade, 15 are female writers (only 6%). Therefore, it appears crucial, on the one hand, to study the Pléaide’s editorial policy to understand the reasoning behind the choice of authors to publish and the perpetuation of what Pierre Bourdieu calls “the eternal masculine” in the creation of “literary giants”. On the other hand, it is important to explain the consequence of the systematic exclusion of the “Other” (non-white-male writer) by the literary canon.

Development of an effective antifog solution

The use of mask during the pandemic induces more fogging of the eyewear and demands effective alternatives that can be used by everyone. Currently, there are two categories antifogging mechanisms avaialble:1) changing the environmental factors such as surface temperature, relative humidity & surrounding air flow, and 2) reducing the surface tension of the water droplets so that they spread out in sheets and enhance the wetting behavior. The second option is preferred2 because the application of these procedures represents a more attractive option with an easier and more manageable nature, ecofriendly without the need of manipulating the heat, better cost-effectiveness, and longer-lasting anti-fogging performance. This research addresses the second category, particularly focusing on the antifogging sprays that are effective on a variety of eye glass and goggles.
As the largest supplier of optical goods and accessories in Canada, McCray is acutely aware of the phenomenal demand of antifog both within the eyewear industry and also general demand as a whole. The requirement for basic antifog has increased over a thousand times based on their own sales of existing antifog products to the point that antifog raw materials are back-ordered globally.
To fulfill the current and future demands TOBECONT’

Indigenous-led food security pandemic response analysis and knowledge sharing

This project aims to challenge unjust systems and policies and support Indigenous people in their efforts to establish their food systems and adapt to the new CV-19 world. It will explore ways to address long-term pandemic-related food security challenges led by Indigenous organizations. The intern will gather information from experiences and existing research across Indigenous communities about existing challenges and potential opportunities to achieve food security and food sovereignty. Using this research, the intern will support the creation of an Indigenous-led knowledge sharing platform
