Temporal soft clustering for profiling and predictive analytics in elderly care homes

Nxtgen Care provides monitoring services for elderly care homes across North America. Their product provides detailed analysis in visual formats to understand the resident’s requirements and directing care in that direction. To meet this goal, voluminous data is collected from the various activities of the residents. Through this project, this data is processed and directed in a way to optimize resources for effective scheduling in a timely manner. This is done with the help of advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. The movements of the residents will be tracked in a timely manner to understand the behaviour and scheduling the care accordingly. This project focuses on providing effective care to elderly people along with effective resource management.

Modelling and Simulation of District Energy Networks

District energy systems are specialized and sophisticated energy solutions that require detailed design and analysis. Their integration with existing utility infrastructure strengthens the resiliency and reliability of the energy services as it enables cities to achieve their energy savings targets and greenhouse gas emission targets. This research will investigate and model the use of distributed energy resources like combined cooling heat and power generators, heat pumps, thermal storage units, thermal and PV solar and waste heat to determine optimal system operation. Seven district energy systems will be developed to model business as usual, cooling only, heating only, as well as combined heating and cooling scenarios. Systems will be comprehensively analyzed used primary thermodynamic principles of mass, energy, entropy and exergy analyses. Environmental impact assessment along with techno economic evaluation will also be conducted. Overall, the primary objective of this research is to model and analyze distinct district energy systems for various applications.

Considerations for an exercise training program for women living with obesity-related infertility: a community-based feasibility study

Increased physical activity has been shown to be beneficial for people who experience infertility and obesity. However, limited research exists on exercise programs that help women improve their ability to conceive. Using the principles of exercise science, our research team will develop an exercise program for women experiencing infertility and obesity. Due to COVID-19, there has been a suspension in fertility services, highlighting the need for non-invasive treatment options that can be prescribed virtually.
Nutra Holdings Inc. is a nutritional supplement e-commerce company based in St. John’s, NL. This is an innovative partnership as the development of an exercise program for women with infertility will expand Nutra Holdings Inc. into the field of exercise prescription. In the future, this has potential for new products to include packaging exercise programs and supplements. Nutra Holding Inc. will share principles of marketing for knowledge translation from academic research to the general public.

Caractérisation des systèmes d’isolation de masse et de spires des bobinages du stator des grandes machines tournantes

Ce projet a pour but d’ameliorer le controle de qualite et l’entretien des gros equipements de production d’energie electrique, soit les grands hydro-alternateurs. Une des parties problematiques de ces equipements est l’enroulement situe dans la partie fixe de la machine, soit le stator. Ce dernier est en effet soumis a des importantes contraintes electriques, mecaniques et thermiques qui peuvent avec le temps causer des bris. Ce projet developpera des outils permettant de s’assurer de la qualite de ces composantes ainsi que pour determiner leur etat pour les machines en service depuis plusieurs annees, voire plusieurs decennies. Ces outils permettront une meilleure fiabilite et une meilleure planification des operations de maintenance.

Dans la dernière année, GRAD4 a été sélectionnée parmi quelques centaines d’appliquant pour faire parti du programme d’accélération du Centech. Sur la même lancée, l’entreprise a été sélectionnée parmi les 30 entreprises du programme de Propulsion et a été récipiendaire du prix de la Licorne (entreprise la plus prometteuse de la cohorte).
Depuis sa création, l’entreprise ne cesse de croître et compte aujourd’hui 20 employés dont la grande majorité travaille en programmation. GRAD4 explore actuellement la possibilité d’étendre sa solution en Ontario et aux États-Unis à court et moyen terme. Pour 2020 et 2021, l’entreprise a pour objectif d’acquérir respectivement 300 acheteurs et 150 fournisseurs ainsi que 1000 acheteurs et 350 fournisseurs. Pour ce faire, plusieurs activités sont actuellement mises de l’avant telles que la recherche de partenariats, la croissance et la constante amélioration des appels à froid du département des ventes, la création d’évènements dans l’industrie manufacturière afin d’améliorer la visibilité de l’entreprise, ainsi que le développement du marketing digital de l’entreprise.

My day spa, successfully in business for over 13 years, has been severely impacted by the Public Health restrictions in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. We were completely shuttered for 3 months and only reopened because we meet the highest safety standards of sanitation, disinfection and sterilization, follow all the WorkSafeBC protocols for social distancing, PPE, physical barriers and limiting clients and staff numbers and interactions. We have gradually returned to offering wellness services but, in spite of our precautions, employees and customers are expressing concerns about working in near proximity. Business revenues are still down considerably from pre-co-vid times.

Optimization and validation of collagen fiber manufacturing

Natural biomaterials such as cotton, wool and bamboo are common biofibres due to their accessibility and high performance characteristics in textiles. However, their strictly defined composition is severely limiting, as the materials cannot be adapted for alternative uses. Thus, producing biomaterials at an industrial scale has been an active area of research, where the goal is to create materials found in nature at a high throughput. In addressing this problem, 3D BioFibR has created a manufacturing process for various biofibres with applications in biomedical research, healthcare, aerospace engineering, and sustainability. For example, our ColiFibR is comprised of collagen, a protein responsible for the structure of our tissues, and has uses in vaccine development, drug discovery, and tissue growth. Through this project, 3D BioFibR will be able to achieve a production rate viable for commercial application, and move our technology from the lab bench into the market.

Les mécanismes de structuration des idées au sein de Hydro-Québec :Accompagner le développement d’un processus de gestion des idées

L’Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Québec (IREQ) a lancé depuis plusieurs années des actions dans le but d’assurer une organisation de la recherche performante et innovante, capable de répondre aux mutations à venir dans le secteur de l’énergie, et créatrice de valeur pour Hydro-Québec (HQ). Dans ce cadre, les équipes de l’IREQ ont développé de nombreuses idées (i) afin de rendre plus efficace et plus efficient le fonctionnement de l’activité de HQ et (ii) afin de proposer une vision ambitieuse dans des domaines d’activités nouveaux ou connexes à ceux de HQ. Ces travaux conséquents constituent aujourd’hui un réservoir important d’idées pour l’organisation qui n’est cependant pour l’instant pas structuré. Au support de sa démarche consistant à répondre aux enjeux actuels et à venir de l’organisation, l’IREQ entend concevoir une classification et un répertoriage des nombreuses idées émises à travers des outils de reconnaissance afin de pouvoir rapidement les identifier et les mettre en œuvre.

Evaluating the knowledge attitudes and perceptions of new users toward different exoskeletons

The proposed research has the following objectives: 1) Review available research on exoskeletons to better understand the technology. 2a) – Interview industry partners to identify tasks that may benefit from exoskeletons, b)– industry partners with experience using exoskeleton will be asked to give feedback on what works and what challenges occur when implementing exoskeletons. 3) With the information from the last objective, tasks will be physically replicated to test different exoskeletons on simulated tasks in a lab setting. 4) Participants will fill out survey questionnaires based on their experience and use of the exoskeletons
This research will provide an understanding of the technology of exoskeletons, that will help with the implementation of this ergonomics solution that could have a significant impact in the manufacturing industry by lowering injury risk and decreasing discomfort at work.
