Condensation Droplets Shedding in Microgravity

Our experiments will investigate the shedding of condensates when exposed to airflow (aerodynamic forces) in the microgravity environment. Shedding of droplets from a surface is a critical part of the dropwise condensation process to improve heat transfer. Because the use of gravity as a droplet removal technique is not available in space, the use of airflow for shedding droplets needs to be considered for condensing heat exchangers in environmental control and life support systems that operate on near-earth space vehicles like the ISS. The use of surface coatings can increase or reduce the energy requirements for this process. The adhesion of the droplets which form because of condensation is a function of surface properties and the condensing period. We will test different surfaces, and condensing periods to understand the effect of the droplet distribution on the multi-droplet dislodging due to airflow (aerodynamic force).

COVID-19 pandemic and safe distancing protocols set by government officials mean in-person witnessing and execution of various legal and “personal planning” documents (Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Agreements) have been challenged, which directly reduced our revenue. A direct result of the state of emergency declaration (Emergency Program Act) for all of British Columbia, are two ministerial orders (M162 and M161) that allow for remote witnessing (“in the electronic presence”) by a Notary Public for Wills, Powers of Attorney and Health Representation Agreements.

Exploration of inhibitors metabolization and their effect on Rhodosporidium toruloides

Lignocellulosic biomass has been widely accepted as a alternative and inexpensive substrate for biofuel production. The liquid hydrolysate generated from biomass contain sugars (such as glucose, xylose, fructose, arabinose and galactose) and inhibitors (such as furans, organic acids and phenols). However, inhibitors generally alters the sugar consumption, growth profile and metabolic activities of microorganisms. Hence, the objective of present project is to study the inhibitor tolerance of Rhodosporidium toruloides. In addition, Rhodosporidium toruloides also known to accumulate lipids, the feedstock for biofuel. The aim is to evaluate the effect of inhibitors on lipid accumulation and growth profile of Rhodosporidium toruloides. In this sense, if Rhodosporidium toruloides able to grow, produce lipid and tolerate inhibitors, then it would be a value-addition to the undetoxified hydrolysates. Ultimately, the detoxification of hydrolysate would not be necessary to perform before fermentation and ultimately will reduce the final biofuel production cost.

Nouvelles solutions innovantes de cartographieà partir d’images hyperspectrales acquisesdepuis un drone

L’exploitation de drone pour l’aquisition de données hyperspectrales présente un fort potentiel comptetenu des coûts très importants et de la faible disponibilité des solutions aéroportées actuelles. Mais il y a peu d’études adressant l’usage de drone avec des capteurs hyperspectraux. Ceci constitue l’objet du présent projet qui vise à faire progresser les connaissances relatives à l’élaboration et à l’exploitation de cartographie établie à partir d’images hyperspectrales acquises à l’aide de drone. Le secteur des mines constitue le domaine d’application ciblé, compte tenu de l’importance socioéconomique que ce secteur revêt pour le Canada et des bénéfices anticipés de la cartographie à base de drone pour ce domaine. Les résultats et apprentissages issus de la recherche permettront au partenaire du projet de cibler les besoins précis auxquels cette technologie pourra répondre et de bonifier ses offres de service autour du procédé d’acquisition et de traitement développé.

Efficacy of online games for ocean career education

Ocean industries hold many opportunities for employment for the future Nova Scotian work force. However, Nova Scotian junior high students have a poor understanding and a lack of interest in Nova Scotia’s available ocean careers. Ocean career education through online interactive games could increase Nova Scotian students’ interest in ocean careers. By having students try the games and offering us their feedback through surveys we can determine how effective these online games are for increasing student’s interest in ocean related careers. We will investigate how an individual student’s race, gender, age, and individual identity may affect their response to the games in order to better engage underrepresented demographics in ocean careers.

Nouvelle technologie pour la prevention d’accidents de travail pour ameliorer la sante et la securite des employes au sein des usines. Utilisation de la gamification pour la formation des mesures preventives de sante et securite au travail permettant d’offrir des contenus interactifs et ecologiques (immersifs). Cette plateforme permet la mise en pratique des nouvelles procedures et d’ameliorer la conscience des risques via des activites de simulation sur une tablette avec des retroactions personnalisees. La distanciation imposee en raison de la crise COVID-19 amene plusieurs defis dans le milieu manufacturier et de la construction (chantiers) en termes d’operation, de productivite et de securite. II faut re-penser la formation des employes et la prise de conscience de nouvelles procedures et des risques.
