Data Analyst

Due to COVID-19, Pagefreezer’s entire workforce has been remote since March 13, 2020, and they do not foresee a return to the office in the near future. An area of improvement that has been identified now that they’re all remote and connecting virtually is concerning business data and analytics. Pagefreezer currently has multiple data inputs from various parts of the business — from customer use data to sales data to HR data, to financials and more — that are not being unified in one place and leveraged for the management team efficiently and effectively. A business intern who understands data organization, cleansing, and analytics will help collect, store, cleanse, and leverage data in one warehouse that would supply useful data dashboard with helpful analytics to empower the team to make strong business decisions faster to ensure they stay on course and grow during these times.
The role includes –
• Enabling company success by providing insight into business data
• Scoping and planning our data dashboard revamp project by gathering requirements from internal stakeholders and investigating existing data sources and identifying gaps and proposing technical solutions
• Gathering, organizing, cleaning, and storing the various data inputs throughout the organization in a SAAS tool

Strengthening Process Efficiencies in a Changing Industry

This study aims to improve process efficiencies while supporting the development of products that best respond to market trends in the context of a post COVID-19 globalized market. From a process engineering perspective, the proposed activities seek to improve mill competitiveness through waste management to both reduce load on water treatment systems and obtain value added products from wastewaters, and investigate recovery of lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose recovery from mill residues for further product development in biomaterials. The study offers possibilities for more environmentally sustainable processing, potential reduction of current expenses, and potential creation of new revenue streams to increase competitiveness for CBPPL while strengthening university-industry collaborations between Memorial University, and CBPPL. This collaboration further develops subject matter expertise in Corner Brook and Newfoundland and offers students valuable experience with applied research and industry trends.

Machine Learning for Modeling Soil-Tool Interactions

When construction equipment digs, this generates a complex set of physical interactions between the machine and the soil. Being able to accurately simulate such interactions in real-time opens the door to improved operator training and even adaptively-tuned digging operation that optimize the energy-efficiency of construction equipment. With recent advanced in artificial intelligence (AI), this is now within reach. Montreal-based CM Labs is already a global leader in simulations for construction vehicles, and this research will expand the features and types of vehicle simulations it offers and thus increase market share. Improving the realism of simulations involving soil also enables entering new engineering design and simulation markets, initially through our current construction equipment OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), generating profits and new hires.

Stiris Research

Stiris Research is an organization focusing on managing clinical trials for biopharmaceutical and biotech companies. Prior to a drug getting FDA approved, the drug has to go through an extensive and regulated process of testing on clinical patients. Stiris Research captures value by coming in at this part of the industry supply chain and managing the clinical testings with hospitals. By leveraging their strategic partnerships, Stiris Research is able to differentiate itself from other similar sized corporations and run research globally. As bigger million-dollar corporations start going for biotech clients that Stiris Research is focused on, competition in this industry is getting stronger. In addition, due to COVID 19, hospitals have been running less clinical research, which means some trials now need to be conducted virtually. This brings a lot of new challenges and potential opportunities to the business, which is something I will be helping to solve. I will be assessing this new opportunity and repositioning Stiris Research so that they are able to differentiate themselves from other competitors and secure new clients while also maintaining the same level of trust with existing customers.

Process optimization and Spectroscopic Analysis of Diamond-Like Carbon Films

Diamond like carbon (DLC) is an amorphous form of carbon with a high fraction of diamondlike
(sp3) bonds. DLC thin films have many attractive attributes including extraordinary
hardness, enhanced lubrication and wear resistance properties. Aurora Scientific Corp. is the
provider of advanced vacuum coating systems based on its patented physical vapor
deposition (PVD) technology. Aurora is seeking to improve their DLC thin film deposition
technology by optimizing the conditions required to deposit high quality DLC coatings. We
propose to assist Aurora in this development by monitoring the film characteristics during
growth through in situ Raman spectroscopic analysis and optical emission spectroscopy and
to correlate the thin film deposition conditions with desirable physical properties. The
information gathered will help Aurora to implement an integrated OES/Raman process
controller system into its commercial PVD vacuum coating systems.

The building of client relationships start with the company’s in-house Sales team, who have traditionally employed methods that required significant in-person interaction with potential clients. With the social distancing measures that are in place due to COVID-19, much of what the Sales team has traditionally done to engage with customers must now evolve. The challenge at hand is to: 1) research and evaluate preferred methods of communication to existing customers, 2) reassess the traditional sales methodologies of the current Sales team, and 3) evaluate new methods of communicating product information to a digital and largely work-from-home client base.
