London, UK — Mitacs renewed its longstanding partnership with Universities UK International (UUKi) during a signing ceremony at the Canadian High Commission in London, England, on May 23, 2025.
The organization was represented by Dr. Stephen Lucas, CEO, and David Enríquez, Vice-President, External Relations and International Affairs, who travelled to the city to advance research collaborations between Canada and the UK. This is Dr. Lucas’ first mission abroad since becoming CEO of Mitacs.
The ceremony included remarks from Dr. Lucas and Jamie Arrowsmith, UUKi Director, as well as students who have benefited from the program, and was supported by trade commissioners Caroline Martin and Alexandra MacDonald.
The Mitacs-UUKi partnership is one of the largest under the Globalink Research Internship (GRI) program. UUKi represents a network of 140 universities across the nation and coordinates the implementation of Mitacs programs on behalf of its members. Since 2020, Mitacs has supported more than 600 internships from the UK to Canada. The renewed agreement will extend the cooperation through 2028.
Following the signing ceremony, guests joined a networking event, hosted at the Canada House, to explore future areas for collaboration in priority research areas, including quantum technology.
“Mitacs is proud to renew our partnership with Universities UK International, a collaboration that has empowered more than 600 students to engage in cutting-edge research projects alongside Canadian researchers. These students are at the heart of our shared success, driving advances across diverse fields, from quantum science to cancer treatments and sustainable materials solutions. By renewing this agreement, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the next generation of global research leaders and expanding research and innovation collaboration between Canada and the UK.”
