Unsupervised Financial Fraud Detection Using Low-rank Recovery

The goal of this research is to give an effectively unsupervised financial fraud detection method, in which low rank recovery method is used to exploit intrinsic relationship of data samples. The benefits of our methods have several folds: (1) compared with classification-based methods, our methods can deal with the imbalance problem effectively; (2) by using low rank recovery, our methods can exploit intrinsic relationship of data samples effectively; (3) compared with PCA-based methods, the prior used in our methods are more reasonable for the case of financial fraud detection.

Digital Leigh Hunt

Le projet « Digital Leigh Hunt » explorera plus précisément la position centrale de Leigh Hunt sur la scène littéraire et critique londonienne de la première moitié du XIXe siècle, à travers le prisme des outils des humanités numériques. Hunt est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’une des figures clés de la période romantique en Angleterre, connu pour son travail d’éditeur, de journaliste, de poète et d’animateur. Ce stage permettra d’étudier en profondeur les interactions et les réseaux de Hunt. Leveraging Observability via Tracing for Software Regression Detection and Root-cause Analysis

The main objective of the proposed research is to present a new adaptive tracing framework to dynamically adjust the monitoring and tracing of software systems according to the observability objectives at hand. This will lead to a more efficient and effective trace collection and will ensure that the proposed framework will efficiently collect just enough (cost-aware) and relevant (noise-free) trace data around the runtime issues. This is indeed crucial for Ciena, our partner company, where embedded systems and resource-constrained machines are heavily used. To achieve this objective, the interns will study and examine the existing methods and will devise algorithms and strategies for dynamic adaptive data collection as well as dynamic optimization of the amount, speed, and resolution of the collected data, based on the current ongoing behavior or the learned profile of the system under investigation.

cyberSKA II: Scientific test and verification of multi-node distributed infrastructure for data-intensive radio astronomy

The work to be undertaken by the intern with Rackforce builds on a successful NSERC engage grant to develop a distributed cyberinfrastructure system linking the University of Calgary with the Rackforce data centre in Kelowna. This system will demonstrate reliable leading-edge infrastructure for distributed multi-user collaboration for advanced scientific data processing. The planned work consists of processing, visualization and analytics of very large radio astronomy data sets, leading to the full-scale Square Kilometer Array (SKA). The intern is currently processing and analyzing data in Calgary from the GALFACTS project, to explore the origin and evolution of cosmic magnetism. This project involves over 40 scientists in Canada, the US, Australia, Europe, and India. The intern will research, develop and implement the new installation at Rackforce and integrate this with the GALFACTS processing and analytics at the University of Calgary. This will take place through debugging, testing, verifying and demonstrating the new multi-node system for global collaboration. The work will produce the essential end-to-end testing, verification and demonstration of the multi-node system with the new Rackforce analytics and storage capacities supporting the global SKA project. Stylo : un éditeur de texte sémantique pour la rédaction scientifique

Stylo est conçu pour simplifier la rédaction et l’édition d’articles scientifiques en Sciences humaines et sociales. Il est destiné aux auteur·e·s et aux éditeur·rice·s engagé·e·s dans une édition scientifique de qualité. Bien que fondamentale en vue d’une diffusion numérique, la structuration des documents est actuellement reportée à la fin du processus éditorial. Elle devrait pourtant être envisagée dès la production, c’est-à-dire par l’auteur lui-même. La philosophie de Stylo consiste à remettre dans les mains des chercheurs et des éditeurs la gestion du balisage en s’appuyant sur leurs compétences sémantiques plutôt que graphiques. Cet outil repose la question de l’écriture scientifique, d’un point de vue théorique avec une dimension technique en situation d’édition. Le stage sera l’occasion de développer plusieurs fonctionnalités de cet éditeur déjà disponible : l’écriture en mode simultané et la synchronisation avec des systèmes de publication.

K-12 Curricular and Programming Development around New Chinese Canadian History Resources

The recent opening of the Chinese Canadian Museum’s inaugural exhibition, “A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia,” in Vancouver features the history – and present – of Chinese Canadians’ struggle and agency for acceptance and belonging. The SAT exhibit, including its interactive features, provides a valuable experiential learning opportunity for K-12 students and members of the general public. This project will create educational resources to prepare K-12 teachers and students across the country to engage with the SAT exhibition. This project will leverage the opportunities presented by COVID-19 by creating materials for teachers and students in both print and digital formats, allowing for flexible, dynamic in-person and remote learning experiences. Complementary walking tours and interactive workshops will be developed for teachers, students, and the general public. Partner organizations will benefit from the historical research, program development, and expertise that the student interns provide to this project.

Comparaison de différentes traductions en français de l’Énéide de Virgile

Mon projet de mémoire de recherche s’inscrit dans le champ de la traductologie et se veut une approche renouvelée des textes antiques par le biais de leurs traductions. Il s’agit donc de comparer plusieurs traductions en français de l’Énéide de Virgile et de l’Anthologie Palatine à l’aide d’outils numériques (il conviendra d’ailleurs de tester plusieurs approches afin de définir les plus adéquats), d’identifier les variations qui existent entre ces différents textes et de les analyser à la lumière des théories de la traduction. Tout en explorant des questions de traductologie sur les pratiques et les usages de la traduction ou encore sur la spécificité de la retraduction, ces analyses permettront d’interroger la façon dont le corpus choisi donne à voir, individuellement comme collectivement, les œuvres originales et ce qu’il nous en apprend. Autrement dit, les résultats de la recherche permettront de réfléchir sur les apports des traductions à la lecture et à la compréhension du texte source.

Coupled green ammonia electrosynthesis and industrial wastewater electrolysis

As developed nations such Canada and Japan realize their commitments of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, hydrogen-based fuels such as ammonia will become more important. More effective technologies for “green” ammonia will need to be developed to ensure the sustainable supply of zero-carbon fuels for shipping and electricity generation. I propose to develop effective electrode materials for use in electrochemical devices coupling “green” ammonia production with industrial wastewater electrolysis, minimizing the formation of byproducts by their cooperative use. In the Wilkinson laboratory at the University of British Columbia, I have developed inexpensive titanium-based ceramic electrodes that are stable in the harsh conditions demanded for industrial wastewater electrolysis. The Takanabe laboratory at the University of Tokyo has recognized expertise working with versatile copper-based electrocatalysts, which are effective at forming ammonia from nitrate, a constituent of industrial wastewater. This project will leverage expertise and research infrastructure developed in both laboratories to advance effective materials and electrochemical reactor designs for this coupled process.

High-speed interrogation of fiber Bragg grating based optical sensors

Brickeye has developed its optical data acquisition (ODAQ) system in conjunction with partners primarily in environmental remediation, for whom the system was optimized for supporting temperature measurement across multiple parallel channels (up to 48) at low speeds (0.2 Hz). Brickeye’s technological advancements have been primarily focused on system ruggedization for harsh environments and developing user-friendly hardware and software for non-expert users. The jump to include high-speed data acquisition, monitoring transient phenomena, and performing more complex data analysis (e.g. Fourier transform versus peak tracing and correlation) would be significant and open up entirely new avenues for potential clients and applications, while still leveraging Brickeye’s core competencies. Brickeye’s IOT software interface would enable the seamless integration of new sensing modalities with existing services and capabilities.

Electromagnetic treatment to reduce arsenic mobility and toxicity in Oryza sativa (rice) with implications to improve yield in rice-paddy fields

Arsenic (As) contamination in rice paddies is a fundamental problem that can reduce crop yield, affect human health, and compromise food security. Moreover, rice paddies emit 30% of the methane produced by the agricultural sector. Aerating water during the growing season can mitigate As toxicity and uptake by rice, and reduce methane emissions; however, current methods are energy-intensive, and require costly equipment. E M Fluids has developed a budget-friendly, solar-powered, electro-magnetic (EM) treatment device that enhances oxygenation of water. This can increase redox and pH in saturated soil which, in turn, affect As speciation and mobility. We will use microcosms to study the effect of EM treatment. We will measure the flux of As from contaminated soil to water, and speciation of As (arsenite and arsenate) in pore water and overlying water under reference conditions and under EM treatment. The rhizosphere of rice plants may also affect speciation and mobility of As, and we will include planted and unplanted microcosms in the study (2 x 2 factorial design). This technology could provide a low-cost and clean-energy solution to the problem of As toxicity to rice, and could reduce risk of dietary exposure to As through rice.

Invasion potential of Xyleborine Ambrosia beetles in Eastern Canada and Europe (Coleoptera: Curculionida)

Ambrosia beetles are an excellent example for invasive species that show unusual success in establishing in new regions outside their native range. They pose threat to forest ecosystems and plant nurseries in many continental regions, where they were introduced. They have a mutualistic relationship with a group of fungi called ‘ambrosia’ which they carry with them and farm inside the galleries they bore in the wood. These ambrosia fungi serve as the only food source for the beetles and larvae hence, being the most important component for beetle’s survival. In this project, we investigate invasion potential of two most widely distributed ambrosia beetles: Xylosandrus crassiusculus and Xylosandrus germanus. Both are exotic in North America and Europe. In North America and in many European countries, they are considered as invasive pests. However, in Canada they’ve not become a pest yet though they have started expanding their distribution. Thus, in this project we are questioning what limits the invasion potential of these two beetles’ species in Eastern Canada in the aspects of their relationship with host tree and associated fungi, their temperature tolerance under changing climate, and their genetic variations.
