The role of SMEs in supporting migrant integration

Skilled migrants are integral to the Canadian labour market. Yet, existing research provides little guidance on integration beyond the entry point into organizations. This research project aims to gain new insights into organizational integration dynamics for skilled migrants. HR professionals and Line managers in small to medium-sized organizations within the Health, Manufacturing and IT/Services sectors will be interviewed. This project will unpack how these organizations understand, manage, and leverage skilled migrants’ capabilities and explore employers’ opinions on best practices and barriers. ACCES Employment works with large employers and SMEs to determine best practices for recruiting, onboarding and integrating skilled immigrants; thus, our contributions will be valuable. Deliverables will include an Executive report to relevant audiences, targeted Work Integration Workshops, presentations, and a Research/Policy brief tailored to employers, service agencies, and migrants. Our findings will also assist businesses by providing advice on integrating migrants in the local workplace more effectively.

Skilled Migrants’ Involuntary Career Change: The role of Alternative Careers in Migrants’ Integration

While Canada welcomes many skilled migrants into our economy, some newcomers experience labour market challenges, and are pushed towards alternative career options. Thus, they decide to change their desired occupations or pursue new career paths in Canada. As a result, the purpose of this research is to gather information and learn more about skilled migrants’ lived experiences of an involuntary career change in Canada and its impact on newcomer integration. We plan to investigate a group of skilled migrants who were forced to change their original careers permanently due to local career barriers in Canada and are currently employed in an alternative career path. We explore their experiences of this transition, often accompanied by working in a lower-status position. The findings of this study will assist migrants coping with alternative careers and life-changing transitions, employers seeking to hire into alternative careers, and organizations assisting migrants in choosing new careers.

Climate Crisis, Adaptation and Forest Livelihoods in the Most Vulnerable Regions: a Case Study from the Indian Sundarbans

Climate-focused livelihood adaptation driven by donor-funded technocratic development projects has emerged as an instrumental strategy for addressing vulnerabilities of communities in the Global South. However, critical calls are rising for a more nuanced understanding of climate victims’ local realities (which often contrast significantly from national political agendas and climate crisis narratives), socio-spatial dynamics of vulnerability contexts, grounded lived experiences, and livelihood practices of the marginalized rural communities. Drawing on a qualitative case study approach and informed by the political ecology framework, this project aims to critically analyze the discursive framings of adaptation interventions and risk perceptions vis-à-vis de facto livelihood practices of the forest dwellers living in the world’s most disaster-prone areas, the coastal villages of the Indian Sundarbans. Moving beyond the dominant trend of climate reductionism, this study aims to provide critical insights into the multifaceted local realities and everyday livelihood concerns of vulnerable communities to address climate change-induced impacts, adapt to its harmful consequences, and develop community-led resilience strategies. Generating knowledge in these areas is also necessary for achieving Canada’s global climate action goals to build resilient communities, enhance rural livelihoods and help developing countries adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change.

Approche comparée de l’usage de la blockchain en administration et gouvernance scolaires au Canada

Le projet de stage porte sur l’usage de la blockchain dans l’administration et la gouvernance scolaires. S’inscrivant dans un projet de recherche doctoral, il ambitionne d’y contribuer à l’analyse de cet usage ainsi que les changements que la blockchain – ou chaine de blocs – apportent ou apporteraient à la gestion et à la prise de décisions dans le monde scolaire. La blockchain est une technologie puissante au regard de son potentiel de création de nouveaux modèles et outils. Elle est aussi stimulante en raison des défis que son utilisation adéquate soulève. L’approche méthodologique mixte retenue pour mener le projet articulera des outils quantitatifs d’évaluation des changements à des méthodes qualitatives de recueil en ligne d’avis d’acteurs de l’administration et la gouvernance de l’éducation. Une comparaison des résultats sera faite d’une part, entre le Québec et d’autres provinces canadiennes, et d’autre part, entre les réalités canadiennes et françaises pour identifier des bonnes pratiques et des dysfonctionnements notés ou appréhendés par les acteurs. Au regard des résultats, des recommandations seront faites notamment en lien avec la dimension éthique d’un usage raisonné de la blockchain dans le champ éducatif.

Canadian Banking and finance market analysis to personalize customer experience and enable real time marketing decisions and predictions

The objectives of this project includes:
1. Determine the level of customer satisfaction of using different channels for their banking services and what is the factor(s) impacting their experience positively and negatively.
2. Determine the composition of various transaction types and the differentiator(s) behind the behavioral result.
3. Determine the types of devices customers used to perform their transactions and the rationale behind this.

In order to meet above objectives, a self service survey will be published on the electronic platform e.g. SurveyMoney for problem interview identification purpose. The research content will be signed off by myself as due diligence check to ensure quality and meet required standard. I am also happy to proceed with the ethics check if required.
The outcomes of project will bring the behavioral/ pattern insights e.g. Top 5 transactions in online banking, Top 3 devices used to perform banking services and some other qualitative metrics such as market gap, challenges for customers and what would improve customer experience of online banking services. In addition, SWOT analysis and a competitive positioning grid are also included as part of analysis scope.
Last but not least, this research report will be taken as part of my company blue ocean strategy in order to provide unique competitive advantage of my future product in the marketplace.

Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response for Incident Detection and Triage Analysis

When responding to any cybersecurity threat, it is important that a security analyst is able to respond to it as quickly as possible so that they can reduce or eliminate any damage that the threat may cause. However, the high amount of data that must be analyzed when investigating a security event can impact the speed of an investigation. By automating routine incident response processes and orchestrating fundamental investigative approaches, much of the burden of the investigation can be lifted from the analyst. By improving the efficiency of cybersecurity investigations, businesses and citizens alike will be better protected from the threat of cyber criminals.

Use of Agricultural by-Products as Alternative Supplementary Cementitious Materials in Concrete

The cement industry emits approximately 814-935 kg of carbon dioxide. Using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to substitute part of the cement content in concrete is considered an effective method to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete and improve its fresh and hardened properties. To respond to the relative scarcity of traditional SCMs or their localization (whose transport causes environmental and economic problems), locally available agricultural residues of rapeseed (canola) and sunflower will be developed and assessed to be utilized as alternative sources of SCMs. The partner organization will explore the potential for these novel ashes from silicon-rich residues as alternative sources of SCMs for new construction and rehabilitation of concrete bridges and pavements, and hence re-evaluation of its current specifications on supplementary cementitious materials.
