A household-scale granular activated carbon-membrane bioreactor (GAC-MBR) system for water resource recovery in the Prairies region

Inadequate wastewater treatment and reuse in off-grid communities, such as many Indigenous communities, has been a challenge to the environment and hurdle to sustainable development of Canada. Although septic tanks and lagoons have been widely used, they are ineffective in removing nutrients, emerging pollutants, and pathogens, which poses serious threat to the natural water bodies. Through the lens of circular economy, innovative technologies for wastewater treatment and reuse are highly desirable. The goal of this project is to develop a hybrid system for household-scale wastewater treatment and reuse. To optimize the system design and operation conditions and to systematically evaluate the feasibility of the technology, both laboratory and on-site operation will be conducted over the two-year duration. The resultant knowledge and technology will not only benefit the two partners, NACO Technology Inc. and Buffalo Pound Eco Lodge but also shed light on the resolution of inadequate wastewater management remote communities in Canada.

Improving wicking properties for nonwoven geotextiles

Geosynthetics are rolls of man-made products that are used in roads and earthworks. These are often used to improve drainage and work very well in many instances. In some cases such as silt soils or silt-sized mine tailings, geosynthetic drainage doesn’t work well because of the naturally hydrophobic nature of the synthetic fibres. This project will look at ways to enhance the drainage performance in silt soils by modifying the properties of the geosynthetic product.

Spectral fingerprint of soybean experiencing abiotic and biotic stress

Soybean is the fourth most planted field crop in Canada, contributing more than $5.5 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product and supporting more than 50,000 jobs. The soybean crop is susceptible to damage from drought and heat waves, as well as diseases caused by root-parasitic nematodes and fungal pathogens. The project seeks to develop a rapid diagnostic tool, based on drone spectral technology, that can detect and diagnose the stresses that are occurring in agricultural fields. This project aims to help Canadian soybean farmers to make early decisions that can save their crop from the threat of yield loss or crop failure.

Nature-based solutions through marginal farmland naturalization in Southern Ontario at the subfield scale

The proposed project will assess the potential for converting many small patches of farmland to natural habitat. In particular, it will assess both the ecological effectiveness and the economic feasibility of such land restoration. It will map unproductive patches of land within fields where soybean is grown, across all of Southern Ontario, using a combination of in?field observations and satellite images. It will then simulate taking those patches of land out of production, and estimate the resulting impact on biodiversity (population, habitat connectedness), on biodiversity benefits to farmers, and on farmer profits. Simultaneously, it will establish a dialogue between farmers, conservation practitioners, and researchers, to integrate farmers’ experience and preferences into the proposed restoration strategy, and provide them with tools for carrying out such restoration. This will help the Canadian Wildlife Federation to design a strategy for scaling up its work on land restoration, and habitat creation for Monarch butterflies.

Analytical and numerical modelling of fluid-structure interactions of a disc spinning in water with applications for hydroelectric power

Hydroelectric turbines vibrate when they operate, due to their rotation in water. Those vibrations, if not studied and looked after, may damage the runners as well as the shaft, resulting in a decrease of production and operating range, and in a faster deterioration of the components too. Therefore, this project aims to study the vibrations focusing on two critical components of the system’s dynamic: the acoustic resonance in water which can affect drastically the structure vibrations and the behaviour of the shaft attached to the runner which is subject to radial
vibrations. These studies would develop analytical and numerical models to let Andritz having a better understanding of those phenomena and thus prevent the turbines from vibration damages.

A Natural Solution: exploring nature-based solutions as an effective, multi-functional strategy across four regional and local scales

This project brings together a leading team of academics, public and private sector actors to co-develop a
decision-making framework for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to reduce climate change impacts like floods, heat
risks while improving municipal service delivery, enhancing human health and well-being, and protecting
biodiversity. NbS projects range from protecting natural assets (such as wetlands, watersheds and forests) to
building green infrastructure (such as engineered ponds and green/blues roofs). The team will develop and
evaluate the framework for application at watershed, community, neighbourhood, and building scales and
provide tools and resources for government and private sector leaders to implement NbS across Canada.
