Process optimization andS pectroscopic Analysis of Diamond–?Like Carbon Films

Diamond like carbon (DLC) is an amorphous form of carbon with a high fraction of diamond-like (sp3) bonds. DLC thin films have many attractive attributes including extraordinary hardness, enhanced lubrication and wear resistance properties. Aurora Scientific Corp. is the provider of advanced vacuum coating systems based on its patented physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology. Aurora is seeking to improve their DLC thin film deposition technology by optimizing the conditions required to deposit high quality DLC coatings. We propose to assist Aurora in this development by monitoring the film characteristics during growth through in situ Raman spectroscopic analysis and optical emission spectroscopy and to correlate the thin film deposition conditions with desirable physical properties. The information gathered will help Aurora to implement an integrated OES/Raman process controller system into its commercial PVD vacuum coating systems.

Biomedical Regulation & Modelling

The intern will be learning the regulations and stipulations surrounding medical devices to help navigate new developments of the technology. The goal is to minimize the setbacks that are associated with medical device approval by working with the research and development team to ensure that the upgrades are viable. This will free up personnel currently working on regulations to focus, instead, on improving the technology. In addition, the intern will embark on modelling the acoustics of new applicators of the technology in an effort to study the effects of these designs and compare them to the present model. This aides the partner organization in making more informed decisions on their applicators, and opt for the most efficient.

SSE – Viau

Progressive Real Estate Digital Marketing Plan

The overview of the plan is to improve Progressive Real Estate’s social media engagement on various platforms, which will not only improve their brand awareness but also promote their current leasable unit offerings. I will work with Progressive in detailing what their unique selling proposition is related to how they stand behind their product, making long-term quality decisions with their vertically integrated business model and how this can be integrated into the social media campaign. By improving their brand awareness we can bring in new and prospective clients while developing and maintaining relationships with our followers by creating high-quality content that is tailored to a target audience. I can help them meet their social media engagement goals while I enhance my creative-thinking skills, project management skills, and develop more knowledge in marketing and the real estate industry.

Further on the design and fabrication of a novel and passive hand tremor attenuator

Parkinson’s disease is most highly recognized by tremors of the hands that occur in those afflicted with the disease. Though the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease involving motor function begin with very slight tremors of the hands, they further develop into issues such as difficulty swallowing, severe postural problems and extremely limited mobility. In this proposal, a method of reducing these tremors that appear during the early stages of the disease is developed by creating a wearable passive device that reduces vibrations of the hand and arm through the use of magnetic actuators. The proposed wearable technology has surpassed other known alternatives in selected testing scenarios while possessing a light weight of only 120 grams.

What are the needs of Yukon communities: an examination of health, housing, and behaviour – RES0054346

This project will conduct a resident survey across the Yukon to gather critical data that will be used to inform policy decisions across the Yukon in several areas. 1) Housing: gather data to find where there are the most urgent housing needs. The needs may be different from community to community; the data needs to be specific. 2) COVID-response: residents from the Yukon have been impacted by the ongoing pandemic. It is critical that relevant data is collected about the experiences of residents (e.g., mental health, personal safety) to inform response plan development.

Elizabeth Fry Society Holistic Case Management – Circle of Care

The Holistic Case Management – Circle of Care project will focus on creating a framework for staff, practicum students, and volunteers of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Manitoba to utilize in their work. The objective of this project is to ensure that individuals within the organization are equipped to provide support and services to clients in a manner that addresses their unique and individual needs. The framework to be developed through this project is one way this organization seeks to challenge the colonial nature of the criminal justice system by actively engaging with Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing and being. A holistic approach to this organization’s case management framework will be an intentional way to ensure recognition and space for those whose voices are systemically silenced and excluded, and to ensure that clients’ individual needs are appropriately addressed through supports and services that recognize and respect their inherent dignity as human beings.

Toward Zero Waste – A Study in Reducing and Managing Lab Waste

In the last 30 years, mixed recycling and organics composting initiatives have drastically reduced the total amount of landfill waste generated in North American communities, and despite these encouraging trends, communities continue to experience land shortages for sanitary landfills. Zero-Waste initiatives offer a potential way forward to further reduce the amount of landfill waste generated by communities and they offer a way to switch how waste is perceived. The University of Calgary has established a strategic goal to become a Zero-Waste community and one of the main challenges to overcome is the high volume of non-hazardous waste that the research labs generate. The Zero Waste Hierarchy developed by the Zero Waste International Alliance offers a conceptual framework which can guide the implementation of a zero-waste initiative at the University of Calgary research labs. This project will offer support for research labs (and potentially health related laboratories) to achieve zero-waste by: reduced consumption, creative re-use through waste marketing, increased recycling using thoughtful system design, and material and energy recovery using waste management technologies. My proposed project is coordinated by local Calgary non-profit Nature’s Ride (https://natures-ride.com/), and along with progressing the University’s Zero-Waste objectives, my study findings will be used to develop a school program that explores our perception of waste, introduces the concept of system wide waste management initiatives (such as Extended Producer Responsibility and consolidated recycling management), along with giving practical ways students can exercise zero-waste habits in their own lives.

LGM Financial Business Strategy Internship Application Nishaan Dulay

The project I am planning to undertake in this internship involves researching and analyzing the Canadian automotive warranty market to inform the LGM Financial future strategy. Consumers shifting to purchase vehicles online presents more difficulty for organizations like LGM to sell their products, as dealership salespeople have historically been key in convincing consumers to purchase extended warranties. The final deliverable is a map of the market that LGM operates in, outlining key products, competitors, and other information that will provide a knowledge base for decisions to be made. This resource will provide LGM employees with a more comprehensive picture of the market and increase the ease with which knowledge can be shared. The internship will be carried out in a virtual capacity.
