Digital transformation for live music association

As a subsector within the creative industries, live music events have been particularly hard hit by COVID-19 and subsequent repercussions related to stay at home orders and social distancing measures to control the spread of the disease. With this project, we will be addressing challenges related to the recovery of the live music industry in the short and medium term, as well as exploring sustainable hybrid solutions for the long term. The student will be developing digital transformation strategies that integrate digital tools or solutions in a meaningful and purposeful way, in order to satisfy the needs and desires of audiences and customers, and so that the organization and others like it can sustainably weather future crises. This iterative development work will take into account audience experience, collective experience, participation and intimacy, core aspects of the public experience of cultural offerings.

Workforce Planning Project Phase 2

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disruptions to the job market. Employment services organisations, including Kingston Economic Development Corporation (our partner organisation), indicate that the growth of businesses and economic activity is seriously hampered by the inability to hire qualified employees. To alleviate the mismatch between demand and supply in the labour market, it is imperative to develop the ability to (a) rapidly detect trends, such as shifting demands in specific regions or types of jobs, or new types of positions or skills, and (b) better communicate to job seekers accurate information about the skills and jobs in demand, to facilitate their rapid reskilling. The purpose of this project is to create a platform enabling the regular and rapid analysis of job demand data scraped from various online databases already in place. The platform will enable answering the following questions: What skills are employers in Kingston and Eastern Ontario looking for? What skills do the jobseekers in Kingston and Eastern Ontario have? Where can the skills be found and where are they needed? What rapid skills development opportunities are available to job seekers that will quickly align them with the needs of the job market?

People, Places, Policies and Prospects: Affordable Rental Housing for Those in Greatest Need

This research project examines affordable housing options and experiences of those in greatest need. The regional Ottawa team is part of a national collaboration of researchers, practitioners, and community partners forming the “housing for those in greatest need” node of the CMHC-SSHRC Collaborative Housing Research Network of the National Housing Strategy. The national project examines various sub-populations of marginalized groups of people in different regions in Canada. The Ottawa regional team is using a community-based participatory research approach to examine the experiences of formerly homeless youth experiences with accessing and living in various affordable housing options. This research will provide a better understanding of youth experiences in affordable housing, and how to improve mechanisms that address youth homelessness and improve affordable housing options and experiences for youth populations.

Alberta Soil Carbon Characterization Project

Croplands are labeled as “climate change mitigators” given their ability to trap carbon dioxide (CO2) as soil organic matter (SOM). SOM is a complex mixture of compounds, primarily carbon (C), derived from plant litter’s decomposition. Healthy soils are now part of “verified C markets”, which are corporate programs in which enrolled farmers receive money for keeping SOM in the ground. Metrics of success are often limited to bulk soil C stocks. This is a critical limitation – not all SOM is created equal and may behave differently in the environment depending on their properties. Within the framework of the “Alberta Soil Carbon Quantification Project”, an Alberta-based C initiative, we propose to study SOM composition among the province. This work aims to provide science-based information for managing soil C at the farm level, taking into account processes that define its potential as a SOM reservoir and resilience in a warming climate.

Project Manager Intern

I am anticipated to be working in the marketing and product development of the Athlete Character Evaluator which is a question-based test that through the use of behavioural and psychological analytics gives an understanding of the athlete’s mental makeup based on 25 different personality ranges. The test is based upon the premise that athletes that succeed have similar identifiers such as the deep desire to succeed and a willingness to sacrifice. Having something to identify that grit and other success indicators can allow for athletes to better understand themselves, and what they can do to succeed.
I will be working on this project largely independently and identifying potential partners in order to create an accurate analytical test that provides upwards of 25 characteristic identifier points. This process will allow me to develop relationships with a variety of potential partners as well as organize meetings and profit-sharing agreements between the involved parties.
The significance of this project lies in its ability to open an entirely new market to METL and then the integration of it’s current main product into the offering of the product to allow for a high-level comprehensive offering of services. This will provide an area of growth for METL during the pandemic and as consumer behaviour for interacting with each other shifts drastically.

Development of a multiplexed readout for microwave kinetic inductance detectors

As new generations of millimetre-wavelength cosmology experiments look to detect ever-fainter signals, they require ever-increasing levels of sensitivity. Because modern detectors and readout systems already operate at such high levels of performance that they attain the physical limit imposed by the photons they detect, any improvements in sensitivity must instead come from increasing the number of detectors that an experiment operates. The next-generation experiment on the South Pole Telescope, SPT4, proposes to achieve this by adopting a detector technology which is new to this scale of experiment, the microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID).The first major deployment of these detectors for scientific means at millimetre wavelengths, this represents a significant technical challenge, as existing systems on the telescope must be either majorly overhauled or developed anew. These systems centre around the transport of signals into and out of the cryogenic equipment which houses the experiment’s focal plane. The development of these systems involves testing with MKIDs, which are operated at sub-Kelvin temperatures (100mK) and require highly specialized experimental setups, such as are available at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and at the University of Chicago.
