Digital Transformation for Theatre Organizations

In the short term (12-18 months) the project will contribute to the successful recovery of the Toronto Fringe and the theatre industry, through planning, audience research, events, and digital transformation planning. Over the long term, with a lens of roughly 10 years, the contributions of this project will aim to protect the organization and the arts and cultural sector in Canada from the devastation it has encountered due to COVID, in the future. The development of hybrid solutions that take into account the desires of audience members, customers or clients, as they pertain to the theatre industry, as well as the changing behaviours of those people with the emergence of new personal technologies, will contribute to the evolution of how the public engages with the arts and cultural sector, and subsequently, the financial stability of that industry and its members.

Digitizing and modernizing a historic freshwater research database

IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) is an environment not-for-profit organization and one of the world’s most influential freshwater research facilities. It features a collection of 58 small lakes and their watersheds in a sparsely populated region of northwestern Ontario, Canada, unaffected by human impacts. IISD-ELA has been under operation for over 50 years, and as a result, has a vast database consisting of historical datasets that need updating and digitizing, especially as the organization transitions to remote work and learning. My main project will be to assist with the development of statistical and computational methods to automate the accomplishment of this goal. These methods will include artificial intelligence systems such as machine learning and neural networks. IISD-ELA, as part of this database, also maintains polygon representations of the 58 lakes in the area, however these polygons require updating and repair. I will be tasked with using ArcGIS to carry out this necessary geoprocessing. IISD-ELA is also heavily involved in education programming for all audiences, and I will also be completing three or more communications products to contribute to this initiative. These products will be available to the public and will serve to educate the viewer about IISD-ELA’s current research.

Digital Transformation for the Performing Arts Industries

As a subsector within the creative industries, the performance arts industry has been particularly hard hit by COVID-19 and subsequent repercussions related to stay at home orders and social distancing measures to control the spread of the disease. With this project, I will be addressing challenges related to the recovery of the performance arts industry in the short and medium term, as well as exploring sustainable hybrid solutions for the long term. In close consultation with the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, I will be developing digital transformation strategies that integrate digital tools or solutions in a meaningful and purposeful way, in order to both satisfy the needs and desires of audiences and customers, and so that the organization and others like it can sustainably weather future crises. Given this unique turning point, in which we are designing both digital solutions and hybrid possibilities for when the economy opens up in a larger and more sustained way, this iterative development work will take into account audience experience, as it relates to scale, collective experience, participation and intimacy, core aspects of the public experience of cultural offerings.

Conscious Brands Inc – Business Model Generator

In 2020 we did a soft launch of our Conscious Brands Assessment software to former clients and industry colleagues. We had moderate success, and realized that our impact was limited by our capacity. With COVID aside, we feel that we need to pivot from a strategy of targeting B2C businesses to a focus on B2B businesses. We have identified a working group of other brand and management consults to pilot a B2B model and add the Conscious Brands Assessment tool to their toolbox.
The goal of offering the position is to help further clarify the program fee structure, the flow of information to the accredited providers, training program/ best practises, and a go to market strategy.

Development of AI-enabled Intelligent NDT Platform

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is frequently performed for various manufacturing sectors, but its current practices require human operators to be involved in all aspects of the data collection, transfer and analysis. With the advent of Industry 4.0, NDE technology needs to be upgraded to “NDE 4.0” comprising essential aspects such as automatic and autonomous NDE, interconnectivity for data communication, and real-time data analytics using AI, which cannot be achieved with current technology. In this program, we will develop a new hybrid NDE that can address these aspects to realize NDE 4.0.
In this project, we will develop a new intelligent NDE platform that controls the NDE process, interprets the data using AI algorithm, and communicates with the cloud server in real-time.
The proposed research will give Canada a competitive edge in the study of NDE, structural health monitoring and the integration of NDE with real-time AI. This integration will enable a higher level of NDE technology, allowing Canadian industry to thrust into NDT service and equipment market, while ensuring the safety of the products, structures, and infrastructure.

Exploring Indigenous Approaches to Autism in Education

The overall aim of this research is to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of Indigenous autistic students, their families, teachers and communities by more deeply understanding Indigenous approaches to autism and intervening in settler colonialist and ableist policy and practice. The research is located in Brandon, Manitoba. The research questions, which will be explored through sharing circles and multimedia storytelling are: What are the experiences of Indigenous autistic students and their families, teachers and communities? How might an Indigenous approach to autism and inclusion improve educational experiences and outcomes? This community-engaged project addresses a gap in existing educational literature around autism and inclusion from Indigenous perspectives, including the historical exclusion of Indigenous people from autism diagnosis and Indigenous informed supports. The research and its outputs (summary report of findings, short educational videos) will benefit publics schools, teacher education programs, service providers and community organizations in Manitoba and Canada; advance knowledge across broad academic disciplines (inclusive education, teacher education, disability studies, decolonial studies, social justice education, qualitative research, arts-based research, multimedia storytelling) and respond to the TRC calls for action in education.
