Sustainability & Environmental Management in a Private Sector Seafood Company

Clearwater Seafoods Ltd. Partnership (Clearwater) is a global seafood company concerned with the long-term sustainability of marine resources. A number of Clearwater’s products are MSC certified. This is a voluntary program which involves verifying that the rigorous standards outlined in the federal fisheries regulations are being followed. Annual audits are conducted to ensure they are meeting these standards and the intern will assist in this process. The intern will also look at fuel, electricity and water usage, as well as the waste produced in the facilities to determine areas where Clearwater is being sustainable and other areas that can be improved. Another factor which determines the company’s overall sustainability is how well Clearwater’s interacts with its community. The intern will look at past community involvement across locations to understand how much Clearwater is involved with activities such as charity work and other programs and events so that they might improve their engagement within their communities. Reports will be produced from this research that will then be used by Clearwater’s executives and managers for future planning to maximize sustainability within the company.

Retrieval augmented answer generation from a knowledge graph using LLMs

This project aims at enhancing the capabilities of a document management system by leveraging the power of large language models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) models. Environmental Stewardship Coordinator

Members of the District of Lakeland Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) have been conducting environmental sampling since 2011 on four lakes within the District of Lakeland, Saskatchewan, particularly Emma Lake. The primary goal of the program is to collect consistent water quality data, building a database that could be used for public environmental stewardship education. The need for such a program is in response to ever-increasing concerns from the public regarding water quality degradation, increased weed growth, as well as more frequent algae blooms. Data collected to date on Emma Lake shows a decreasing trend in lake transparency with all indicators pointing to cultural eutrophication (i.e. nutrient pollution) owing to shoreline development, erosion, and sediment inflow, boat traffic, fertilizer use and leaky septic systems. During the past six years the volunteers have worked with several Saskatchewan Polytechnic Natural Resource students to assist with water quality sampling, data collection, and dissemination. This year the EAC, in continuation of its Emma Lake study would like to involve a student, not only to assist the current field sampling program, but also to lead in the design and collection of additional field data related to suspended sediments and macrophyte weed growth while contributing to a public awareness campaign.

LispLogics specializes in the dynamic optimization and management of bike share operations, encompassing battery swaps, bike relocations, and maintenance of broken bikes, among other tasks. They face significant challenges in accurately analyzing and enhancing their operational efficiency due to the multifactorial nature of their system. Factors such as weather conditions, temperature, the number of trucks on the road, and staffing levels all influence the system’s performance. This complexity is compounded by the system’s continuous operation throughout the year.
This project aims to address these challenges by developing a comprehensive metrics calculation framework that considers these various factors, enabling more effective real-time analysis and decision-making.

Community-led monitoring of aquatic species for biodiversity conservation

Indigenous peoples and local communities are stewards of Earth’s biodiversity, with their sustainable practices crucial for global conservation efforts. Effective biodiversity monitoring, including tracking at-risk species populations, is essential for understanding species trends, identifying threats, and guiding conservation strategies. Our Mitacs Globalink project focuses on researching how local communities can monitor the recovery of threatened aquatic species in their territories. We will conduct a literature review incorporating diverse knowledge systems (scientific, Indigenous, and local) to develop a practical guide for community-led monitoring. Partnering with the University of Oxford’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Conservation Science, involved in the international Indigenous people and local community-led Transformative Pathways project, our research aims to support community-led monitoring practices. This project benefits the University of Oxford (host institution) by enhancing their understanding of community-led aquatic monitoring and providing a valuable resource for ongoing discussions with Transformative Pathways community partners. Carleton University (home institution) benefits from expanded research networks and opportunities for collaborating with Canadian government departments, vital for achieving national and global conservation targets.

Green Marine Engine Exhaust Membrane Scrubber Technology for Removal of CAC and GHGs

Ionada has developed a patented marine exhaust gas cleaning system utilizing the latest in membrane technologies to provide the marine industry with a simple solution to save money and satisfy new International Marine Organizations (IMO) emission requirements. The intern will implement (install/retrofit/integrate) Ionada’s product onto existing ships with the aim of improving and optimizing the ship’s exhaust system. In order to install this new marine exhaust gas cleaning system on ships, an intern is needed to do structural design of marine retrofitting for a scrubber system on the ships and study the current configurations and specifications of the ships in order to develop a retrofit solution for the scrubber.

The company has grown steadily since its inception in 2019 using traditional marketing methods and is poised to double its revenue over the next year. In order to achieve this objective, the company would like to create and launch a Customer Referral Program whereby customers refer their peers to Enso Connect to take advantage of the software platform. Enso Connect customers are already referring their clients to Enso Connect, however, without a structured referral system in place, the company is not able to take full advantage of this acquisition channel. A Case Study: Peskotomuhkati-led Marine Conservation at the Wolves

The Peskotomuhkati people have been living and caring for the lands and waters now colonized as southwestern New Brunswick and eastern Maine since time immemorial, living in balance with nature. The marine space here is rich in nutrients from the highest tides in the world in the Bay of Fundy and provides life to many creatures. It is under threat from various pressures, and does not have any formal protection. This project seeks to understand what a Peskotomuhkati-led marine protected area could look like – what conservation tools would best align with Peskotomuhkati values, how best to manage a protected area moving forward, and what lessons can be learned from other Nations across Turtle Island. The research team aims to help prepare the Peskotomuhkati Nation for
future leadership in establishment and management of a marine protected area network to safeguard habitat for future generations.
