Ile a la Crosse Traditional Land Use Project

The Sakitawak Development Corporation (SDC) was incorporated in 1989 by the Northern Village of Ile a la Crosse, in northern Saskatchewan to invest in regional and community businesses across multiple sectors. The organization works to develop social and economic opportunities for the community of Ile a la Crosse and owns several successful businesses and profitable business investments, making it one of the largest Métis economic development corporations in northern Saskatchewan.

The SDC is currently working with A La Baie Métis Local # 21, which represents Métis Nation – Saskatchewan citizens in the Ile a la Crosse region. The partners are collaboratively completing this traditional land use project with the intent that this information may be shared with government, industry and stakeholders in duty to consult negotiations.

Ile a la Crosse is one of Saskatchewan’s oldest settlements, established in 1778 as a fur trading post. The region has a rich history and economy that remains tied to the land. This project seeks to better understand Métis harvesting activity by creating local and regional maps of historical and contemporary land use.

Developing an AI editing system for short-form and long-form multilingual video distribution

The project focuses on creating Aview AI, an AI editing tool to bridge the language barrier for content creators expanding globally. This initiative builds upon previous work in AI for content distribution, emphasizing editing tools for seamless transcription, translation, and dubbing. Expected to enhance Aview’s platform, it will equip creators to reach worldwide audiences, boosting their revenue potential and diversifying content for global viewers. This advancement aligns with Aview’s mission to make diverse content universally accessible, leveraging cutting-edge technology to meet contemporary digital challenges.

Westland Insurance Group Ltd – Learning & Development Internship

Established in 1980, Westland Insurance Group has evolved into the largest independent, Canadian-owned brokerage in the country, prioritizing community connections and social initiatives with over $1 million invested annually. Despite our success, we face challenges in employee engagement and retention, prompting the need for a more dynamic onboarding process. This internship project aims to revolutionize onboarding through innovative e-learning modules tailored to individual learning styles and company culture, leveraging gamification and data analytics. By enhancing the employee experience and fostering a positive workplace environment, the we seek to address retention issues and contribute to Westland’s long-term success.

CO2 pipeline leak modelling — from the point of rupture to the far-field

Through public and private investment, Alberta is heavily committed to the geological sequestration of CO2. Before CO2 can be stored underground, however, it must first be transported via pipeline. Thus, the possibility of pipeline rupture must be included in risk assessment models. Unfortunately, and in contrast to more typical pipeline cargo, relatively few models have been developed that consider the outflow and subsequent spread of CO2 from a localized point of discharge.
This project will address the above knowledge gap in two important ways. Firstly, we will develop then run computer programs that describe the outflow from, and depressurization of, a CO2 pipeline. A second series of computer programs will be developed that describe the flow of a CO2 plume across the landscape and its dispersion into the atmosphere. Results from these programs will then be incorporated into an existing risk assessment model thereby increasing model fidelity significantly.

Surrey & North Delta Division of Family Practice – IT Support and Web Design Internship

The Surrey-North Delta Division of Family Practice (SNDDoFP) is committed to enhancing professional satisfaction for Family Physicians (FPs) and improving patient access to healthcare in the community. We collaborate with various stakeholders to lead initiatives and programs aimed at healthcare improvement. SNDDoFP’s vision is to cultivate an empowered network of FPs, driving wellness and system change, with core values of engagement, representation, and physician wellness. As a small and rapidly growing organization, we are seeking IT Support and Web design interns to fill skills gaps and undertake exciting projects. The IT Support Intern will assist in maintaining and upgrading IT systems, while the Web design intern will contribute to building a website providing crucial primary care information for Surrey and North Delta communities, supporting a larger communications strategy and brand identity building effort. This internship opportunity will play a vital role in executing key projects to enhance access to primary care in the region.

Urètre reconstruit par génie tissulaire

Le Laboratoire d’Organogénèse Expérimentale (LOEX) a développé une technique alternative unique et innovante appelée auto-assemblage. Sur la base de cette technique éprouvée, notre équipe a développé une gamme de tissus génito-urinaires (vessie, uretère et urètre et vagin) présentant une organisation histologique très similaire au tissu natif et une très bonne résistance mécanique. Des tissus urétraux ont donc été reconstruits, caractérisés et greffés in situ chez le lapin. Le modèle reste néanmoins à optimiser pour faciliter sa translation clinique.

L’équipe du Dre Fossum à Copenhague est experte dans l’utilisation de cellules souches urothéliales isolée à partir de l’urine, et travaille sur une méthode alternative pour accélérer la production d’un tissu urétral avec du collagène comprimé.

Nos tissus offrent une meilleure différenciation, mais leur modèle est produit plus rapidement. Elissa ira donc apprendre ces techniques et pourra également utiliser nos tissus reconstruits et tester la faisabilité de ré-extraire les cellules afin de les insérer dans le modèle de leur équipe.

Cette collaboration naissante permettra certainement des avancés significatifs dans les prochaines années puisque les équipes œuvrant dans ce domaine se font de plus en plus rares.

Développement d’une approche de conservation systématique pour les milieux humides nordiques intégrant les services écologiques

Avec l’accroissement de la population mondiale, les territoires nordiques constituent un potentiel croissant de développement pour l’accès aux ressources naturelles. L’augmentation imminente des perturbations dans ces territoires risque d’entrainer un déclin de la provision des services écologiques, soit les bénéfices que les êtres humains obtiennent des écosystèmes. L’objectif de cette recherche est de caractériser l’impact qu’auront les perturbations industrielles sur la provision des services écologiques. Plus spécifiquement, le projet permettra de déterminer à quelle moment (avant, pendant ou après) serait-il préférable de planifier la conservation des services écologiques. Nous simulerons plusieurs scénarios de développement dans la région de la Minganie (Côte-Nord, Québec), puis en fonction de chacun de ces scénarios nous réaliserons des réseaux de conservation pour protéger une provision durable de dix services écologiques. L’analyse des données nous permettra notamment d’identifier le seuil de perturbation minimale qui pourrait être réalisé sur le territoire avant d’entrainer des pertes irréversibles quant au succès de la conservation des services écologiques.
