Elimination of ethylene in AeroPod system

A local Canadian company that works on designing and manufacturing completely customizable and smart in-door ecosystems for sustainable production of fresh crops is our industrial partner. Our partner is dealing with the presence of ethylene in the atmosphere in the growth chamber. In this research, we will investigate the possibility of implementing an innovative technique that uses ozone assisted catalytic oxidation to convert ethylene to H2O and CO2 that are favorable for the developed technology by our partner.

The needs for up-to-date maps are also growing fast. However, map production still heavily relies on manual annotation of geo-spatial images, i.e., aerial and satellite images, which is expensive and time consuming. This project aims to improve the mapping efficiency from geo-spatial images by over 10 times. The core technologies to be developed are semantic segmentation of geo-spatial images and shape modeling of segmentation results to generate object geometries. Accurate geometric boundaries of objects required by maps are difficult to extract using existing methods.

Conceptual study of the techno-economic effects of straight drilling on mining operations

Conventional mining activities are composed of four distinct operation coming together. These operations are called; drilling, blasting, loading and hauling. As being the first step in this chain of operations, drilling quality and preciseness is very vital for the success and effectiveness of remaining components. Accurate drilling not only saves time to the company but also saves from costs and resources. In this sense, mining machinery manufacturing leaders have been working on the best technology available to better drilling accuracy with sophisticated tools and expertise.

Developing the use of UAV Imagery Systems for Agriculture Applications

During the last decade, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) drew the attention to be used as platform for imagery systems for different applications including agriculture applications. Therefore, the proposed research aims to develop the use of UAVs for specific important agriculture applications as weed management. These developments include the use of low-cost imagery sensors for these applications. On the other hand, Cansel is fully supportive organization for cooperative research with universities.

Laboratory and field scale biodegradability assessment for Pela case products for environmentally end-of-life management

Pela, incorporated under Open Mind Development Corporation (OMDC), manufactures environmentally sustainable products, such as compostable smartphone and laptop cases. Pela aims to lead the industry in taking complete responsibility for its manufactured products and continuously improve their lifecycle so that they have the most renewable and sustainable beginning of life, and the most graceful end of life. The Pela Case is made of Flaxstic®, which is comprised of compostable bioplastic elastomer and flax straw materials.

Integrated computational intelligence for forecasting import and export volumes of commodities

The global seaborne trade is growing rapidly and being supported by shipping, one of the major transportation tools around the world. With the satellite and terrestrial AIS (Automatic Identification System) data, it is possible to track the trajectories of vessels carrying commodities. The capability to accurately forecast the import and export volumes and types of commodities will potentially enable the maximization of business trading profits. This research aims to develop forecasting algorithms to predict the trading in the business with the vessel tracking and cargo inspection data.

An Investigation into Determining the Source of Elevated Metals in Seepage at Mount Polley Mine

After identifying elevated metal concentrations in two seepages from a waste rock pile at Mount Polley Mine, an investigation was launched to determine the potential source as well as the implications for potential treatment. Evidence points to a previously unidentified source of acid mobilizing metals from the waste rock pile and being neutralized along the way, before daylighting at the base of the pile. The most likely source that was identified was a sulphur pile, which was stockpiled on site as a source of acid for leach pad research.

Recovery of nickel from awaruite: froth flotation and atmospheric acid leaching behavior of the natural nickel-iron alloy

The Decar Nickel District is located in British Columbia. With more than 2 million tonnes of Ni, the district represents a significant resource. The nickel occurs in an uncommon mineral awaruite which is an alloy of nickel and iron. Due to its strong ferro-magnetic properties and high density (SG 8.0) it should be easily recoverable using magnetic separation followed by gravity concentration. However, the presence of significant amounts of magnetite which as similar physical properties makes it difficult to separate the awaruite from the magnetite.

FortisBC-UBCO Collaborative Research Project: Smart Energy Chair

Exploring the best smart energy choices to meet the growing energy needs of British Columbia (BC) is important due to Canada’s new climate change mitigation targets as well as the rising economic burdens of energy use. A collaborative study has been proposed between UBCO and FortisBC identify smart solutions energy conservation, climate change mitigation, demand side management, and the development of net-zero communities, and to provide recommendations and define long-term implementation strategies for the above smart energy choices.

Weed Classification and Density Estimation for Variable Rate Herbicide Prescription

Precision agriculture is the technique to replace the traditional farming methods in order to sustainably improve the crop productivity without adversely impacting the environment. Precision agriculture is the solution to our growing food needs. CropPro consulting generates SWAT maps using soil, water, and topography information which divides the agriculture land into multiple zones. Each zone has its own requirement in terms of fertilizer, water, nutrients, etc.
