Cognitive Mapping or CM - sometimes called Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping- is a process by which an individual, group of individual, or groups of individuals can identify a central topic and over prolonged discussion, identify the various factors which relate to that topic. CM has been recently applied to explore issues in First Nations communities by researchers at the University of Ottawa to, for example, explore factors associated with diabetes (diet, lifestyle, education, etc) and to weigh these various factors associated with the central theme as strongly or weakly, positively or negatively.
The David Suzuki Foundation, a science-based Canadian environmental organization, and an intern from the University of Alberta will analyze data on sea lice and Pacific salmon population dynamics using mathematical and statistical techniques.
The digital and bio-mechanical analysis of human motion is an attractive research field as it helps one understand and interpret pathologies affecting the body’s articular components. The goal of this project is to develop data analysis and automatic classification methods to differentiate between data from asymptomatic and pathological individuals. The data will be drawn from 3D morpho-functional assessments. Developed methods could eventually be considered for the creation of decision support and pathology diagnosis tools.
Computer prediction models for forest fires are of great value to wildfire management. The goal of this project is to analyze the mathematical model used by the Wildfire Science Unit in their Prometheus fire prediction software package. In particular, the internship will work on the development of a robust software package which includes 3-D features such as valleys and ridges. Such a software extension will require a detailed analysis of the 3-D equations used in the package which govern fire propagation.
Various species of mites pose significant challenges for apple growers worldwide. In order to control the mite infestations, miticides can be sprayed or predators can be introduced. The latter option leads to a complex ecology characterized by predator-prey relationships. Multiple species, with varying behaviours, give rise to complex population dynamics that must be better understood if apple growers are to prevent damage to their orchards effectively.
Feedlot Health Management Services is a comprehensive beef industry consultancy, providing veterinary services, herd health programs and computerized health-recording systems and other informational tools to producers. Fat yield, lean yield, meat tenderness, carcass marbling and carcass grading are some characteristics of cattle that are measures of beef quality. Thus, the goal of this project is to determine how these characteristics and the genetic makeup of the cattle are correlated with one another.
Demand deposits accounted for more than 27% of the total liabilities of Canadian Western Bank at the end of 2006. These deposits have no specific maturities and may behave as current liabilities or as longer maturing liabilities. The bank pays lower interest on the demand deposits than on the most part of fixed-term deposits. If we can estimate the portion of the demand deposits that act as longer-term liabilities, we can invest that amount in assets with a higher rate of return. This amount is referred to as “core deposits”.
For this project, the intern will be building a probabilistic model to predict how an individual emerald ash borer searches for host trees. The emerald ash borer is an exotic beetle which most likely arrived in North America in wood packing material carried in cargo ships. The beetle larvae feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. The results of the research will be used in a larger risk model being formulated by the Knowledge Synthesis Group at the Canadian Forest Service.
The main goal of this project will be a key contribution to the implementation of the Six Sigma methodology to the service provisioning and service assurance of Bell’s business customers. Six Sigma is an organized and systematic problem-solving method for strategic system improvement and new product and service development. It relies on statistical methods and an approach which dramatically reduces customer-defined defect rates and/or improves key output variables. This methodology will be used to reduce costs and increase profits.
