Effectiveness of a community based therapeutic writing intervention to improve community sense of self

The Toronto Writers Collective (TWC), a not for profit corporation, aims to empower vulnerable populations by giving them a voice through providing them the opportunity to engage in creative writing. The TWC has received numerous impact statements from attendees and facilitators regarding their involvement in the program. This research project will investigate the effectiveness of the program offered by the TWC. Attendees and facilitators will be queried regarding their participation in TWC workshops. They will also complete several questionnaires.

STEAM Robotics for Teachers: How Educators Learn

Teachers are being challenged to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) across the curriculum more frequently and effectively. Many teachers are challenged with these aspects for several reasons. In particular, subject areas are still isolated in British Columbia (BC), and only a few schools truly have STEM/STEAM programs. Secondly, STEM is more often accepted than the “A”. Thirdly, many of the “technology” or “engineering” elements lie outside of the comfort zone of some teachers.

Evaluation of a e-learning software with pre-service science teachers

This research aims to investigate the use of technology for science teacher candidates to master learning of laboratory safety content. The focus of this study will be on first and second year science teacher candidates who are expected to know laboratory safety procedures when they become employed, so as to ensure their and their students’ safety.

PART A- Conversion of CO2 and H2O to Syngas Using Reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (RSOFCs) Technology

The main objective of this project is to demonstrate the highly promising performance of our world-leading catalysts in a scaled-up solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) system. SOECs can efficiently convert the greenhouse gas, CO2, or mixtures of CO2 and H2O, to useful chemicals and fuels, while running on excess electricity, thus serving to store intermittent electricity generated by wind and solar.

Understanding and improving techniques to teach financial literacy in children

Youths spend over $141 billion annually. Yet, these same youth often demonstrate extremely poor understanding of healthy financial habits such as emergency funds and budgeting. The proposed project seeks to tackle two main questions through the Dojo financial literacy learning application. First, what principles/techniques have been shown to positively impact financial literacy (e.g., interactive games, infographics, etc)? Second, is the Dojo platform an effective tool for teaching children about financial literacy?

Evaluation of the Ever Active Schools Physical Literacy Project

SHAPE will work alongside an initiative called Ever Active Schools, who is involved with promoting and supporting healthy and active school communities through a comprehensive school approach. One of the projects SHAPE and Ever Active Schools is working on is a professional mentoring opportunity named Physical Literacy in Residence that is being implemented in 72 in-need primary and secondary schools across Alberta. The proposed study is an evaluation of this Physical Literacy in Residence project.

Experimental and field-based validation of environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring of juvenile and resident salmonids in British Columbia streams

Determining the distribution and abundance of species is a central requirement for making sustainable resource management decisions. Ecofish, in collaboration with the University of Victoria, would like to evaluate if environmental DNA (eDNA) methods can be used to reliably detect low density salmonid species in streams, with the objective of implementing eDNA as a defensible methodology in the environmental consulting industry in British Columbia.

Researching and Evaluating SBL’s Youth Space Model, Summer Program, School Year and March Break Career Exploration Programs and Improving SBL’s Research-Evaluation Framework

This project takes a holistic and comprehensive analysis of all aspects of Success Beyond Limits (SBL’s) programming as well as their research and evaluation frameworks. Operating in a low-income and marginalized setting, youth that attend SBL’s programming find it difficult to find, secure and keep meaningful employment. This research will capture the experiences of those young people coming to SBL’s programs, identify the barriers they face with respect to employment and measure the impact of all of SBL’s programs.

Evaluation of EAAA Train the Trainer Workshop and Study of Recruitment Strategies

The intern will analyze pre- and post-training survey and interview data from the SARE Centre’s EAAA Train the Trainer workshops in order to improve the quality of this training. These surveys/interviews assess trainees’ previous experience, skills, knowledge, and confidence in relevant areas as indicators of the workshop’s effectiveness.

Evaluating the impact of an educational arts program on adolescent socio-emotional and academic growth among inner-city, high needs schools

Capturing the impact of program performance on adolescent outcomes is an important way to understand the ways in which a program has best provided its services for optimal outcome success. However, there is limited literature on valid measurement of program success among arts-based educational programs. The project will undertake an outcome evaluation, which focuses on using evidence-based methods that can be validly and reliably used to capture adolescent outcomes that align with the program’s objectives.
