There is more to Artificial Intelligence than the algorithm. Intelligent systems must also consider how data is acquired, trade-offs between algorithmic approaches, and what action is taken based upon algorithmic decisions. Lunar Medical, Inc. performs research and development in the area of intelligent and operational space medicine. This internship will investigate the full range of necessary components that make up intelligent health support and devices for the objective of operationalizing medical artificial intelligence.
The project is part of an ongoing program led by the Niskamoon Corporation that aims to develop a bay-scale monitoring program for eelgrass beds in James Bay (Eeyou Istchee). The Niskamoon Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that provides an efficient framework for cooperation between the Cree people and Hydro-Québec, enabling the implementation of the Cree/Hydro-Québec Agreements.
According to literature, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can imitate movements since they have learned many social, vocational, speech, and academic skills. However, motor skill deficiency has been mentioned as one of the contributing factors to social isolation, reducing opportunities for people with ASD to be connected to society and peers. Improving motor skills increases their confidence to participate in social interactions.
Pressure ulcer is one of the top five leading causes for re-hospitalization of spinal cord injured patients. In general, there are three main difficulties associated with treating these ulcers: 1) Presence of cavities and tunnels which makes it difficult to treat with conventional regimens, 2) A high chance of infection and, 3) Susceptibility to weight-bearing pressure on bony areas of the body.
In partnership with True North Clinical Research, two studies are proposed to examine the moderating effect of using cannabis on anxiety in response to death-thoughts. In Study 1, participants will be randomly assigned to consume cannabis either before or after thinking about death. Self-reported affect will be assessed to determine if cannabis helps reduce death-anxiety.
A crisis is looming for many Ontario citizens with developmental disability and other challenges that make their support needs especially complex. In recent decades a process of deinstitutionalization moved the Province away from a morally problematic "warehousing" model towards one where people had an opportunity at meaningful lives in their communities. However, many are living lives that depend on family members who are stressed, aging, and in declining health, and there is no plan in place for what happens when these families can no longer carry that load.
This research will measure the effects of the Cycling Without Age program on participants by observing a variety of indicators. An existing program in a long-term care home will be observed, and 50 residents will be recruited: a biking group (n=25) who will be biked twice a week for 12 weeks and a strolls group (n=25) who will go for walks/wheelchair rides outside.
This project explores how one congregate living environment in Edmonton Alberta supports their residents through the use of the material environment including designed spaces and objects created by architectural and interior designers. The web of person-environment relationships and interactions that is complicated, dynamic, messy, and riddled with shifting agency is unpacked revealing how humans depend on things, things depend on things, and things depend on humans.
Development of Collaborative Service Robot (CSR) technologies usually targets a certain population group like seniors or people with developmental disabilities (DD) and requires tailored and dedicated research and development. This project is ultimately seeking to provide a proof of concept of a CSR platform that can assist people with DD. The overall project involves research and development focused on two broad robotics themes: autonomous navigation and situation awareness.
Twenty years ago, the first human genome was sequenced at a cost of 3 billion dollars. Today, this can be done in a day at a cost of approximately $1000. Despite this drastic reduction, the promise of personalized medicine, to customize therapy for each patient, has not yet been realized through next generation sequencing (NGS). While sequencing is becoming a commodity, the data analysis remains a significant challenge. Streamline Genomics addresses these challenges by providing clinicians with a powerful and user-friendly analysis platform.
