Analyzing a large user community using the social network analysis framework

In this project we will conduct Social network analysis (SNA) of MyCA user network, in order to assess the interplay between social influence and the diffusion of information within the MyCA platform. SNA offers a convenient method to represent and analyze interactions among the components of a system. SNA can thus provide an abstract representation of the MyCA a system, and allow us to study its function and organization.

Multi-host firmware for TCi controller

C-Therm Technologies' TCi Thermal Analyzer, measures quickly and non-destructively the thermal properties of liquids, powders, pastes and solids with very low conductivity and up to 120 W/mK. The TCi controller currently communicates with a single PC host using a limited resource 8 bit microcontroller. In this project we will investigate the firmware changes needed to accommodate a second tablet computer connected via a USB dock and/or a WIFI link.

Terahertz surface plasmon near-field sensor for material sensing applications

In this project, we plan to address the specific problem that TeTechS Inc is facing at this stage of its product development project, which is collecting a complete set of measurement data for an array of organic materials with different levels of purity and demonstrate the capability of its proprietary terahertz sensing techniques to qualify and quantify purity and integrity of organic LED (OLED) materials with the level of precision required in OLED deposition and material purification processes.

Industry Internships on Smart Applications and Virtual Infrastructures

This Mitacs Accelerate program will support a internships for graduate students in the areas of services and applications using next generation communications, Internet, and cloud computing. The interns will be placed in Canadian telecom and networking providers and vendors and will undertake research projects defined jointly with these partners. The program will prepare graduates to work and industry and will foster collaboration between universities and industry.

Development of ultrasonic based oil-water interface level monitoring device

The project aims at developing prototype of a new ultrasonic based device to monitor andmaintain oil-water interface position and oil layer height. Need for such a device has been identified for applications in oil-water separators commonly used in a number of processes. The ability to monitor interface position as well as liquid-layer thickness is essential to ensure continuous operation of separators and avoid complications in downstream processing and/or accidental discharge to sanitary or storm sewer systems.

Enhancing Application Performance developed with HTML5 & JavaScript over unreliable, high latency and low bandwidth connections using Web Standards

This project investigates the use of Web Standards to enhance performance of HTML5 & JavaScript applications as a means to ensure rich engaging interactions for remote clients that are using low bandwidth connections with high latency and frequent interruptions.

Assistive applications for smartphones

The proposal is for two projects designed in conjunction with Nokia and CanAssist in the research theme of assistive applications for smartphones. The first project focuses on support for the growing senior population, designed to help seniors retain independence for as long as safely feasible. The second focuses on support for individuals with visual disabilities, designed to use smartphones to convert the visual information into voice information for way finding and navigation.

Gallium nitride processes for efficient low loss power transistors

The project’s aim is to develop a comprehensive technological platform for the fabrication of GaN-based electronics devices for applications in telecommunications and power generating and management systems. As of this date, the progress relative to this technology has been excellent and sustained. Our team has now established the most advanced fabrication expertise for GaN-based devices among Canadian universities, and state-of-the-art high electron mobility transistors are now routinely fabricated. Technologies around the epitaxial growth of GaN-based materials are also to be developed.

Efficient signal processing and Radio Resource Management (RRM) for coordinated multi-node downlink transmission in heterogeneous cellular networks

A significant challenge in the design of fourth generation (and beyond) cellular systems is the reliable delivery of high speed (up to 1 gigabit per second) wireless data to mobile users. The use of techniques involving multiple antennas at the transmitters and receivers is a key step toward this goal. However, interference from adjoining cells is a primary impediment to such techniques reaching their full potential, especially for users in regions near the cell boundaries.

Twitter Data Processing

Given the plurality of voices available on the Internet, it is often difficult to estimate the level of expertise of the individuals that one encounters in cyber-space. On the other hand, it is also difficult for any individual expert to establish their credibility in this sea of screaming voices. Therefore, it is desirable to have an independent mechanism to prove a given person's claims to authenticity and legitimacy. One valuable source of information in this endeavour is the individual's interactions with content on the web, be it blogging, tweeting, etc.
