Coherent Control of High-Q Devices

Research into understanding and controlling microscopic quantum mechanical phenomena has led to revolutionary new quantum devices, including quantum sensors and actuators that have unprecedented levels of sensitivity, efficiency, and functionality for a wide variety of tasks. A particularly compelling example is high quality factor (high-Q) superconducting resonators for magnetic resonance. These new devices will be substantially more sensitive than current devices in widespread use.

Optimization of Myelin Water Imaging

The purpose of this research project is to optimize a magnetic resonance technique designed to measure myelin in brain and spine. This technique holds great promise for diagnosis and management of neurodegenerative diseases as well as abnormal brain development. The finalgoal ofthe project is to have a magnetic resonance protocol which could be offered as a product on a Philips Healthcare magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Currently, no MRI manufacturer offers myelin water imaging as a product.

The Phone Oximeter, a Simple Mobile Device to Screen for Sleep Apnea in Children

The high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) poses a serious threat to the healthy growth and development of many children. The lack of oxygen during sleep can lead to daytime sleepiness, growth failure, behavioural problems and developmental delay. Polysomnography (PSG), the gold standard to diagnose OSA is high in cost, requires a well-equipped sleep laboratory and overnight stay. The Phone Oximeter, is a mobile device that integrates a pulse oximeter with a cell phone. In addition to the blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), it provides a signal of changes in blood volume.

Maximizing Benefit from Hearing Technologies for Persons with Early Stage Alzheimer’s Disease Year One

There is a strong connection between hearing loss and cognitive impairment, particularly dementia, in old age. The number of Canadians with dementia is expected to reach 9% of adults over the age of 60 by 2038. With these large numbers and limited health resources, caregiving will increasingly fall upon family and friends. Caregiving for persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia, is frequently associated with elevated levels of emotional and physical distress.

Multifunction system for measuring endothelial cell remodeling under laminar and turbulentpulsatile flow related to heart disease Year One

A London-based company, Novel Cardiovascular Systems Inc, has developed a unique multifunction system for measuring endothelial (arterial wall) cell remodelling under different types of laminar, turbulent and intermittent pulsatile flows that are associated with the onset and development of heart disease, notably atherosclerosis (narrowing of the artery). In order to accelerate the product to market, NCSI must validate the system with respect to cell biology and blood flow mechanics.

Development of Radio-Imaging Agents Targeting Necroptosis Year Two

The joint-effort project by Nordion Inc and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute aims to develop a series of radiolabeled necrostatin derivatives, which act as imaging agents based on necroptosis (programmed necrosis - a type of cell death) inhibitors to help diagnose disease (such as cardiovascular, neurological diseases and cancer) and monitor their treatment effects. The roles of the fellow are to design, synthesize and characterize these agents and to assist in testing their biological properties through further in vitro and in vivo evaluation.

Ils seront

i) de cibler les familles de composés d’importance selon notre contexte en ce qui concerne l’industrie pharmaceutique, agroalimentaire et le domaine de la médecine vétérinaire;

ii) d’établir une liste de leurs produits de transformation/dégradation dans la l’environnement et leurs métabolites, selon la littérature, ou les travaux faits dans l’industrie pharmaceutique;

Translating knowledge about optimization of surgical recovery into achieved outcomes forpatients: A dismantling trial in colorectal surgery

This study will be a three-arm, dismantling randomized trial aimed to assess the extent to which recovery after colorectal surgery is influenced by postoperative facilitation of nutrition and mobilization. Adult patients (> 18 years) with colonic or rectal diseases planned for colorectal resection at the Montreal General Hospital will be considered for inclusion. Criteria for exclusion will be: metastatic disease, medical conditions that preclude adequate postoperative feeding and/or mobilization (e.g.

Scale-up and Optimization of 3D Gel Dosimeters

Objectives: As stated in the Background section, the main goals of the proposed project are the design of a library of gel dosimeters and their fabrication on a commercial scale in batches of at least 20 litres.
