Post-operative insulin resistance, hyperglycemia and loss of body protein are the features of post operative stress- induced catabolic response which is associated with increased morbidity, mortality and adverse outcomes post operatively. There has been a great deal of research on different approaches to optimize the post-operative insulin sensitivity such as hormonal and nutritional modifications and interventions, developing minimally invasive surgical techniques and epidural anesthesia. However, the correlation between insulin resistance and body protein loss is not well understood.

Water-Safe UV Curable Antimicrobials Nanoscale coatings for Plastics

Our research is focused on finding new ways to combat the spread of Hospital acquired infections (HAI’s) in hospitals and other institutional work places. Our research combines a new non-leaching chemical nanotechnology that forms a protective barrier to difficult surfaces and kills bacteria on contact. The nanocoatings are water based and fix readily to surfaces such as plastic by exposure to low UV radiation. These transparent nanocoatings are invisible to the naked eye but act as sentinels and avoid the formation of harmful bacterial colonies

The Effects of a Novel Knee Brace Design for Assisting Knee Extension in Healthy Individuals

Spring Loaded Technology is a Halifax, Nova Scotia based start-up company focused on developing innovative knee bracing technology. Their Levitation™ knee brace has been developed to assist knee extension in people with leg weakness, but it has not yet been tested. The proposed research project will test the Levitation™ knee brace in healthy people, providing feedback to the Spring Loaded regarding the efficacy of their knee brace. Participants will be tested with and without the brace to compare its effects on knee extension torque and muscle activity.

Redesign of Dental Preventive Formulations- Part I. Identification of Potential Remineralization Enhancers

Every day, people put their teeth at risk by eating foods that contain a lot of sugar. A lack of brushing teeth causes the build-up of bacteria. The bacteria use the sugars present in these foods to cause the weakening of teeth and if left untreated, can lead to holes and cavities in teeth. The concept of “re-mineralization” is the idea of using minerals such as calcium to make teeth stronger and have them heal faster.

Mild Cognitive Impairment: Can Decline to Dementia be Monitored and Delayed by Computer-Based Games?

Over the last decade, there has been a growing literature on “brain plasticity” and the role of computer based games for brain health improvement. Most of the focus has been on healthy older adults. While there has been pharmacologic treatment available for dementia for decades, there is no accepted standard treatment for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). This project aims to engage individuals with MCI in computer-based games that are programmed to 1) allow remote monitoring of improvement and/or decline and 2) strengthen cognitive function through improvement in game performance.

Investigation of neural monitoring using electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG)

Brain wave technologies allow researchers and clinicians to monitor the brain at work. Our team has developed a new technology that uses electroencephalography (EEG) to provide an online record of different brain functions in a very short period of time. The brain waves recorded by this technology may change normally as time passes and previous MITACS funded work is characterizing the variation in brain waves in healthy individuals. In the current study we want to expand our findings into patient groups and new imaging technologies.

Vestibular Response Pattern Recognition in Relation to Concussion

This proposal presents research projects to evaluate a new technology, Electrovestibulography (EVestGTM) that holds potential to objectively, quickly and quantitatively measure the severity of concussion, thus aiding in its diagnosis. EVestG signals are recorded painlessly and non-invasively from the external ear in response to a vestibular stimulus; they are the brain signals modulated by the vestibular response. When concussed, people commonly experience balance (vestibular) problems and dizziness, as well as confused thinking.

Contextual Momentary Assessments of the Auditory Environment by Wearers of Hearing Aids

We would like to investigate the use of hearing aids in real life environments. Retrospective questionnaires are often subject to memory errors and recall biases. In order to obtain more accurate momentary evaluations of sound and noise, our proposed research involves asking participants to complete real-time evaluations in the laboratory and in their everyday environments. The momentary assessments will be recorded using a mobile evaluation tool.

Otoscopy and Ophthalmology Training Technology Development

Teaching medical students and allied healthcare professionals accurate and patient friendly diagnosis of ear, eye and nasal conditions are challenging tasks due to the lack of realistic models and interaction with patients. The OONTTDP is a collaboration between the Hospital for Sick Children and Otosim to improve the teaching results through development of realistic simulators with various conditions embedded within an easy to use system.

Computer-assisted cardiac disease diagnosis system

With the advances of medical imaging, cardiac images have posed great challenges in processing and analysis due to the large amount of data generated. Dynamic Computer Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images, also referred to as 4D (3D+time) imaging, for example, have great capacity for screening, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiac diseases. However, the tools to handle the image files are insufficient to best use the time of specialists such as radiologists and cardiologists.
