Laise Barbosa gets a glimmer in her eye when she reflects on her research at Simon Fraser University this summer. As an education student and avid musician from Universidade de Brasilia in Brazil, Laise was excited to combine her two passions under one research project with Professor Susan O’Neill at Simon Fraser University’s Department of Education for her 12-week project in Canada.
It was her interest in cardiology that persuaded Rayane Simas to come to Canada through a Mitacs Globalink Research internship. As a medical student at Brazil’s Faculdade de Ciências Médicas de Minas Gerais, Rayane knew Globalink would provide her with an international hands-on research experience directly related to her field of study.
Mayela Sosa, a third-year psychology student at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, studies neuroscience. She’s working on a grasping study in Dr. Claudia Gonzalez’s Brain in Action lab.
“I chose this project because of the professor and because it is more related to movement and neuroscience than other projects,” she says. “I’m learning a lot. Many of my friends tried to get an internship in Canada so I’m really grateful Mitacs has given me this opportunity.”

With heart disease affecting 1.3 million Canadians, an accurate map of a diagnosis can have profound effects on the patient’s recovery time and outlook — ultimately saving lives and reducing costs.
Working under the supervision of Professor Shi Cao in the Department of Systems Design Engineering, Shefali is using her computer science background to help develop an innovative face recognition app for Google Glass — a type of “wearable technology” — like glasses with an optical head-mounted display.
Hailing from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, in Pilani, India, Shefali says she is thrilled to take part in research involving Google Glass, calling her project an “amazing opportunity to have hands-on experience with today’s technology.”
Marina Maciel is laying the foundation for success in her career. A civil engineering undergraduate student from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Brazil, Marina is researching ways to make buildings safer during seismic events under supervision from Professor Dan Palermo at York University’s Department of Civil Engineering. Together, they are working to test, analyse, and refine a new type of reinforcement technique for concrete walls to better withstand intense earthquakes.
Hanh Phuc Nguyen is a Business English student at Foreign Trade University in Hanoi, Vietnam. She hadn’t considered going abroad as part of her education, but discovering the Globalink Research Internship online prompted a change of heart: “I wasn’t confident about travelling abroad and hadn’t even thought about coming to Canada. But once I learned about Globalink, I knew I had to apply!”
Frederich Nietzsche once spoke about ‘dancing’ as an art that is indispensable to the highest forms of education. Elaine Dong, a Computer Science intern from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, has found her inner dancer — figuratively and literally — in Montreal as she contributes to research on fuel efficient air traffic management this summer.
Samuel Hybois began his undergraduate career interested in all areas of engineering; however, a class project piqued his interest in biomedical engineering. His home program at École des Mines de Nancy (Université de Lorraine) in France requires each student to complete an internship, and the university had forwarded information about the Globalink Research Internship. Several projects in biomedical engineering appealed to Samuel, and he was eventually matched with a Université de Montréal radiology project, where he worked in the Laboratory of Biorheology and Medical Ultrasonics.
