How technology relates to Canadian national defence policy, strategy, and planning is not well understood. To date, much of the research on emerging technology in the military focuses on concerns over ethics, privacy, human rights, and governance, largely overshadowing equally important research on the way technology intersects with military strategy and tactics, defence recruitment and training, and alliance politics and national policy.
This project will involve the research and production of micro-histories of non-profit humanitarian organizations based in Canada. By examining small moments in the foundation and work of these organizations, our goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of Canadian civil society organizations in international humanitarian programs. Our partners work in a variety of sectors (from refugees to resource extraction-based violence) and in a variety of countries (from Lebanon to DR Congo).
Cancer will affect 2 in every 5 Canadians in their lifetime, with just over 25% representing new breast cancer diagnoses in women. Despite significant progress in the treatment of the most common cancer in women, resistance to chemotherapeutic agents remains a consistent obstacle in terms of the successful treatment of many types of breast cancers. The Mitacs-funded collaboration between NuvoBio and the Biggar lab at Carleton University is seeking to address this issue by systematically designing and developing peptide-based inhibitors that hold the promise as new therapeutics.
Cultural Heritage is the legacy of the past that needs to be protected and tarnsmitetd to future generation, its conservation makes part of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations Conservation. This proposal is focused on the development of a digital information platform for conveying the importance of conservation and protection of cultural heritage places at a global scale by harnessing advanced reality-capture techniques for recording heritage places.
A survey, comprised of 20 questions, and organized according to the following four categories/themes: 1) Patterns of use; 2) Perceived health risks; 3) Access to e-cigarettes; and 4) Exposure to cultural content (i.e. marketing and advertisements) will be distributed to a minimum of 100 students from grades 7-12 in the Ottawa private school system. The survey will also include attached images of e-cigarettes advertisements with open-ended questions to better grasp how survey respondents perceive e-cigarette ads.
The main concern for helmet performance is the reduction of skull and brain injury risk during impact events. Combinations of shell materials, foams, and three-dimensional engineered structures are used to design hockey helmets. Using current helmet evaluation techniques, the contributions of each of these components cannot be directly assessed. In the proposed work, high-speed X-ray imaging will be used to obtain full-field, time-resolved internal monitoring and measurement of helmet component deformation and interaction with a head surrogate (headform).
Red Maple Trials (Ottawa, ON) created a new facility where patients can be exposed to airborne allergens. In this facility, the patient’s symptoms (with or without medication intervention) can be monitored in a controlled manner. In the current project, airborne allergen (pollen and dust mites) concentration and size distribution will be monitored in time. It is expected that more homogeneous allergen concentration and spatial distribution in this exposure room will allow better competitiveness for the company to attract pharmaceutical companies.
Source code is what programmers write as instructions to the computer to execute to complete a desired task. All operating systems and applications on a computer or a mobile device is a runnable version of a compiled source code. Experienced programmers can easily browse and understand source code in different programming languages because they have the necessary technical background that is not available for every-day users.
In Canada there are just over 17,000 public rail crossings—17% have gates, 22% just have bells and lights, and the remaining 61% have a white, reflective X crossing sign which at times is accompanied by a stop sign. In the U.S., the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) latest figures (2009) indicate there are 136,041 public rail crossings—31% have gates, 16% have flashing lights and 1% have highway traffic signals, wigwags and bells. The remaining 52% have a yellow and black crossbuck. Unsecured rail crossings, combined with distracted drivers, can lead to fatal accidents.
Traditionally a Service Function Chain (SFC) consists of a set of dedicated network service boxes such as firewall, load balancers, and application delivery controllers that are concatenated together to support a specific service. With a new service, new devices must be installed and interconnected in certain order. This can be a very complex, time-consuming, and error-prone process, requiring careful planning of topology changes and network outages and incurring high OPEX.
