Design of Gallium-Nitride (GaN) Based Bridgeless Totem-Pole Power Factor Correction (PFC) Controller

In the development of power electronic devices, more and more switch mode power supplies (SMPS) are used in various fields. SMPS transfer power from a DC or AC source to DC loads. And they have many advantages, such as high conversion efficiency, low energy loss, and lighter weight than linear power supplies. However, switching current in SMPS can cause electrical noise problems and it may have a poor power factor. To solve these problems, gallium-nitride (GaN) based Totem-Pole power factor correction (PFC) has been used.

Enhancing Compliance of Financial Service Industry Through Understanding and Predicting Employees’ Conduct Risk

Conduct risk management is a topic of great importance to financial service firms. Misconduct from staff members in financial institutions can result in substantial costs. However, compared to other types of risk faced by financial institutions (e.g. credit risk, market risk, liquidity risk), conduct risk and the related reputational risk have been understudied. One of the main reasons for the limited research in this area is the lack of data available assessing employees’ misconduct.

Characterizing the concentration and makeup of microplastics in wastewater effluent and stormwater overflows to the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers and evaluating microplastic removal in wastewater streams with a newly developed mesh sock.

The research aims to examine the amount and type of microplastics in wastewater streams entering the Ottawa River. As wastewater treatment has been identified as one of the main conduits of microplastics to freshwater environments, the research will sample both wastewater effluent and combined sewer overflows to get a better understanding on how many, and what types of microplastics enter the Ottawa River via these pathways.

Mapping the experiences and struggles of un(der)employed Afro-Caribbean “Black” (ACB) young men in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa

This project sets out to learn how young Afro-Caribbean Black (ACB) men are supported when they utilize Youth Employment Training Programs (YETP). The study will collect information, based on the lived experiences of the young men, while also taking into account of the perspectives of YETP coordinators, Employers who work with YETP, and government and non-government funders who provide monetary support to YETP's. The research will be situated in three Canadian Cities (Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal), which have high ACB population.

Using technology to measure, map and magnify the impact of due diligence programs in artisanal mining communities in Eastern D.R Congo

Ulula is a company that provides software and analytics to create responsible supply chains. In 2018, Timothy Makori, Ulula and the International Peace Information Service (IPIS), an independent research organization working on issues related to artisanal mining in Eastern Congo, undertook a baseline study assessing the social, economic and human rights impacts of initiatives promoting traceability and responsible artisanal mining in Eastern Congo.

LGBTQI2S Seniors’ Safety in Public Services

This project will result in a national environmental scan on LGBTQI2S seniors’ safety in health care, social care and municipal public services. It aims to identify promising policies and practices as well as systemic and structural barriers. It will also include the experiences of LGBTQI2S workers who serve seniors, a largely unexplored area. Egale Canada Human Rights Trust (Egale) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) are national organizations with common interests and distinct positions from which to influence change.

New Catalysts and Chemical Processes for the Pharmaceutical Industry

Synthetic chemistry is used to assemble the small organic molecules that comprise many of the important consumer products used by society every day. Such fine chemicals are used to assemble drugs, agrochemicals, electronics, materials, dyes, etc.. Metal catalysts are part of the arsenal that the synthetic chemist uses to make such prized small molecules and Total Synthesis Ltd. (TSL), the sponsor of this research, is a globally recognized leader in catalyst invention and sales.

The ‘classical’ charango: applied cross-genre integrations in European Art Music

The charango is a small guitar like instrument iconic to Andean music of South America. Like many other instruments the charango has travelled to other cultural environments. However, even in these circumstances the charango has for the most part not become a significant presence in other musics. In this practice-based research project, I will introduce the charango into an international European art music context to examine the process of genre-crossing in the creation new musical spaces.

Sensitivity Analysis of Gas and Particulate Matter Emissions from Future Power Generation in the Province of Alberta

The Province of Alberta (AB) has decided to phase out coal power generation by 2030 and increase renewable electricity production to 30% of total power generation, also by 2030 with the remaining 70% of the power generation being dependent on natural gas. It has been conjectured that part of generation portfolio could be diversified to include nuclear power generation.
