The Embedding Project is a public-benefit research project that relies on strong social science research methods to bring together thoughtful sustainability intrapreneurs from across industries and around the world, and harnesses their collective knowledge to develop rigorous and practical guidance that benefits everyone. This internship will offer an MBA student the opportunity to gain experience in both practice and research, while learning from leaders in the field.
Retirement Communities (RCs) are an attractive bridge between aging-in-place/staying at home and going to full care/LTC by allowing older adults to remain independent while still receiving minimal assistance, as well as access to activities and socialization opportunities. With the mean age of residents being 85 years old, these communities offer unique insight into the future of Canadas aging population.
This collaborative project with Rimeware will investigate out-of-band measurement approaches that can passively monitor the network traffic and provide rich detailed network information, e.g., latency, loss, route path, etc. The goal is to build a programmable system for accurate, generic, and robust network measurement. It includes two sub projects. In the first sub-project, we will research the sniffer deployment problem with lossy and correlated link models and develop a set of instructions that provide programmable interfaces for network administrators.
Insufficient and mistimed artificial lighting within the hospital environment can disrupt circadian rhythms, adversely affecting patients sleep, mood, and recovery. In collaboration with BC Hydro, we will run a study at the Burnaby Center for Mental Health and Addictions to test whether controlled 24-hour lighting with enhanced daytime brightness and restricted nocturnal light exposure can help regulate the circadian cycle and improve the sleep and psychological well-being of patients with concurrent disorder (co-occurring substance abuse disorder and mental health disorder).
As young people increasingly move away from institutionally-driven dutiful citizenship (Bennett, 2008), political participation is no longer only defined by voting in elections, volunteering with civic associations and town hall meetings but increasingly manifests through participatory politics - peer-based acts like citizen journalism, podcasting, video production, art projects, tech-based activities, digital activism and lifestyle politics (vegetarianism, localism, boycotting). These approaches are expanding the boundaries civil society through new forms of citizenship.
Measuring the workout intensity and duration is necessary to judge training effectiveness. For instance, a training modality called high intensity interval training (HIIT), involves exercising for short intervals with maximum intensity combined with longer low-intensity recovery intervals. This form of training would help the metabolism to use more fat as fuel, improving athletic endurance, and as opposed to traditional cardio exercises, can mitigate muscle loss. Similarly, measuring the force of impact and number of impacts is necessary to judge the health and safety of the athlete.
Private car dependence represents a significant problem and a major obstacle towards a more sustainable future. A good combination of different modes of transportation can create an opportunity to overcome this issue. In this sense, integrating car sharing into Transit Oriented Development can be an ideal combination to promote a smart and sustainable development. This research will examine specific aspects of the relationship existing between car sharing and the public transit infrastructure.
The Connections and Engagement Survey Breakdown Project will provide a deeper understanding of relevant community health issues in the Metro Vancouver area by studying various elements associated with civic engagement and citizen participation. Using data collected by the Vancouver Foundation, this project will produce several reports on key issues of neighbourhood and community well-being and engagement and several reports pertaining to the engagement profiles of various cities in the region.
The production of optimised catalysts and catalyst layers for proton exchange membrane fuel cells is both labour intensive and time consuming. However, these materials and composites are of critical importance if proton exchange membrane fuel cells are to become commercially viable. Specifically, highly active catalysts are required in order to reduce platinum group metal content and system cost, while optimized catalyst layer designs are necessary to achieve high performance and robustness in operating cells.
Considerable advances in geological and rock engineering mapping methods using both conventional and remote sensing techniques have occurred over the last decade. The primary objective of the proposed research is to develop the use Virtual and Mixed Reality (VR/MR), techniques in improving structural geological and rock mass field data acquisition. New uses of MR and Virtual Reality, VR, methods will be explored in combined field and office settings.
