Developing an STI Awareness Model for Youth in Northeastern BC

Recently completed research has demonstrated concerns related to the control of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people in Northeastern BC’s ‘booming’ oil/gas communities. The Northern Health Authority (NHA) and OPTions for Sexual Health (OPT) are new partners in the provision of sexual health services in Northeastern communities. A recent syphilis outbreak has provided the impetus for the NHA and OPT to consider how to develop an awareness campaign to promote STI testing and prevention among young people.

Building Neighbourhood Third Sector: A Holistic Organizational Governance Development and Training Tool Kit

This project supports a partnership between the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of Greater Vancouver and the School of Social Work and Family Studies of the University of British Columbia. It aims to produce a toolkit and training package for neighbourhood houses which are neighbourhood based, multi-service non-profit organizations.

Algorithms for Nonlinear Inversion in Medical Imaging

Non-invasive imaging techniques using near-infrared (NIR) light yield extensive information on cells and tissues and can reconstruct images of the deep interior of biological tissues. The place occupied by NIR imaging within the multidisciplinary field of molecular imaging has been growing in recent years. This is, in pat, because of its intrinsic advantages (such as its low cost and non-invasiveness) when compared to other imaging modalities such as positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT).

Application of a Computational Fluid Dynamics and Experimental Approach to Fuel Cell Humidifier Optimization

The operation of a fuel cell to produce electricity requires a number of components outside the fuel cell stack itself. One key component is the humidifier. Proper operation of a Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell requires a certain humidity level to be maintained in the membrane(s) present in the stack; the humidifier fulfills this requirement by transferring moisture from the exhaust gas stream to the inbound fuel, as well as increasing efficiency by preheating the fuel with waste heat in the exhaust.

Perception and Selection of Sponsored Links

The objective of the proposed project is to examine how users respond to the web links of familiar and unfamiliar brands when they are displayed at different locations in the search result pages in partnership with Enquiro Search Solutions, Inc, a privately held search engine marketing firm headquartered in Kelowna, BC. Participants will be asked to conduct a number of guided internet searches, searches for which they are provided the search terms.

Optimizing Stocking Strategies for Rainbow Trout in Mixed Species Lakes

The goal of this project is to develop a method of estimating optimum stocking strategies in mixed species lakes in collaboration with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, a non-profit organization which works in partnership with the provincial government to deliver the fish stocking program as well as providing conservation fish culture services. The growth and survival of stocked fish will be estimated across a range of initial sizes, trout densities and competitor fish densities.

Non-Viral Gene Delivery to Gut Stem Cells

The internship project will work to deliver a weight loss protein that will combat obesity. The intern will coat DNA for the protein with a natural substance that can be delivered orally or through surgery. If successful, the team expects to see the presence of this weight loss protein in the blood of the specimens. Moreover, the levels should increase after meals and this should encourage less eating and weight loss. enGene, a biotech company specializing in DNA delivery to the gut, will provide the training necessary for this project.

Usability of a Vessel Compressibility Characterization Systems Using Ultrasound Imaging

A system for the detection of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a disease where blood clots form in the legs, has been developed by the student and his supervisors at UBC. The current project is aimed at determining an approach using pre-screening criteria to evaluate the system in a clinical setting without having to examine hundreds of patients to obtain reliable results, as a consequence of the low incidence of the disease.

OpenVL Implementation on Multiprocessor Platform

The project involves creating a vision based system to perform multi-camera 3D tracking of persons in an indoor environment. The implementation of this system will be using Open Vision Library (a standard library for image processing that is designed with hardware acceleration in mind) and it will be running on one or multiple processor hardware platform developed by LightHaus. LightHaus Logic is a Vancouver-based company that develops compact high-performance systems for advanced video analytics and embedded computer applications.

Municipal Development: Finding Political Incentives for Economic Investors

The intern is confronted with a classical question in political economy: what kind of political institutions can facilitate economic development? The City of Vancouver represents a fascinating case study in which three important players are locked up in a strategic relationship that can either spur or damage the prospects of further economic development of the city. Player A, City Government, seeks to extract more revenues in taxation in order to accommodate the demands to provide welfare and services.
