Barriers to connectivity are often associated with roads, culverts, and even beaver dams. An M.Sc. student with the CRI at UNB working in collaboration with the Restigouche River Watershed Management Council will develop a watershed-scale connectivity analysis using a GIS model to best inform the management of connectivity to reproductive habitats for Atlantic salmon in the Restigouche River watershed. The project will evaluate the current and potential available habitats for egg deposition, juveniles, and conservation requirements needed for an adaptive and integrated management plan.
The safe operation of a dam, such as Mactaquac, necessitates regular integrity monitoring over the structure lifespan. Optical fiber temperature sensing can provide seepage monitoring throughout a dam structure providing the operator with location specific seepage rates. Since the monitoring will be continuous over time and potentially operate over the lifespan of the dam operators can identify trends and evaluate repair effectiveness.
“Consumers and companies alike are looking for safe and natural ways to keep their products fresher for longer,” says Natasha, CEO of Chinova Bioworks. “But labels full of unpronounceable, artificial ingredients can turn consumers off. It was important to me to create an alternative to the chemical preservatives normally found in food and beverage products.”
While conceptualizing the product, Natasha was searching for someone to take it to the next level — and she knew that Mitacs was available to help fledgling companies like hers.
The Bicknellâs thrush (Cathurs bicknelli) is a rare songbird with the most restrictive breeding range in North America. The Bicknellâs thrush spends its summer months breeding in high elevation, stunted growth forests â a habitat that the species specializes in. In New Brunswick, there has been a documented population decline of 11.5% per year since 2001. After having identified specific geographic areas where Bicknellâs thrush present, this project proposes using radio-tracking to describe individualâs breeding home ranges and extrapolate population size and densities.
Physical activity can help people prevent and manage diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Currently, many Canadians are not sufficiently active, citing lack of time, money, knowledge, and access to physical activity programs as barriers. This compilation of physical activity programs in Saint John, New Brunswick, will gather details of the types of physical activity programs available and will map them by average income in local neighbourhoods to determine if access is equal for all.
Salt marshes are important coastal ecosystems because they provide many services to surrounding areas. Due to the high fertility of salt marsh soil, they have a long history of being converted to farmland in Maritime Canada. In recent years, there has been growing interest in restoring salt marshes to protect against coastal erosion, mitigate sea level rise, and provide increased habitat for birds, fish, etc.
AV Nackawic has experienced significant variations in the quality of its final product, including, pulp viscosity. There are many variables, both quality parameters of raw materials such as, wood species, chip size, and process conditions such as P- factor, EA, H-factor, play a key role in the overall quality of the final product. Due to the multivariable and complex nature of the issue, modelling/ data analyses using PCA and PLS analyses can reveal the key parameters that affect the pulp quality, thus gaining operational guidance.
Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are land based fish farms that recycle the water from the fish tanks using multiple water treatment processes. Fish produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, through respiration, that needs to be removed during the water treatment process since high levels of carbon dioxide are hazardous to fish. Currently the most common method of removing carbon dioxide from recirculating water is with degassing towers. Moving bed biofilters and sidewall-box airlift pumps could also be used as a method of carbon dioxide control.
Information technology rapid evolution was always closely followed by sophistication of malware. And with ubiquitous shift to mobile platforms, rise of mobile malware and in particular banking malware came as no surprise. In general, any financial operation on a mobile platform potentially exposes a user to the variety of threats including data leakage, theft and financial loss. Driven by financial profits, banking malware leverages user's cluelessness, openness of mobile platforms, often a lack of security measures.
Early Learning is an impotant undertaking in Canadian society and supporting young children as they move from home to early learning centres onto kindergarten classes is of particular interest and value to educators, helping us to ensure we provide the right environments and supports for all young children. This research will help us to provide the most appropriate learning experiences to young children in new Brunswick and beyond.
