The Arctic Sustainable Energy Futures Toolkit will be a print and web-based guide for communities to follow when developing their comprehensive community energy plans. This step-by-step toolkit will transfer knowledge using best practices, resource guides, case studies, videos, worksheets, and templated pathways to help communities create and implement their energy visions.

Can retaining wetlands in agro-ecosystems mitigate the effects of agricultural intensification on biodiversity?

Agricultural practises in the North American prairies have intensified in the last several decades to increase food production, resulting in the drainage of up to 70% of prairie wetlands in some areas. Not surprisingly agricultural intensification is associated with the loss of biodiversity. Our research aims to assess whether retaining wetlands in agro-ecosystems can mitigate the effects of agricultural intensification on biodiversity, by monitoring wetland-derived insects and the breeding success of birds that depend on wetland-derived insects as prey.

Evaluating the performance of starch and flour ingredients using Rapid Visco Analyzer 4800 at high heating temperatures

In this project, the intern will have the opportunity to work in Perten Instruments Canada and Carbohydrate Chemistry and Utilization Laboratory at the University of Saskatchewan to use the latest model of one instrument (Rapid Visco Analyzer 4800; developed by Perten Instruments) to evaluate the functionality of starch and flour ingredients. The new instrument has the capability to heat starch/flour slurry up to 140°C, which is a significant improvement from previous models as they can only reach a heating temperature of 95°C.

Development and evaluation of a liquid desiccant membrane dehumidifier for Canadian greenhouses.

This project is going to develop and evaluate the performance of a noble dehumidifier. The design of that dehumidifier (SPLD unit) is already done by Nortek’s research group and submitted for the patent. The assembly of parts and lab testing of that SPLD unit will done during this project time. After lab testing, if all expected features are ensured, the unit will be installed in Greenhouse C. The initial control strategy will be made according to the previous environmental data. The data will be taken during running time of the unit and the control strategy will be modified.

Optimization of Bull Semen Cryopreservation through Iterative and Rational Media Design

Cryopreserved (frozen) semen provides optimal genetics to cattle and especially dairy farmers, facilitating improved breeding programs. The sperm cryopreservation process significantly reduces fertility compared to fresh sperm. Each percent of reduced fertility amounts to a significant financial loss to farmers. Thus there is great pressure on semen providers to improve post thaw fertility, as it is a significant market decider. In order to be successfully cryopreserved, sperm must undergo a number of damaging processes.

Limb Imaging Fourier transfer spectrometer Experiment (LIFE) – Characterization and Testing

The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) specializes in developing and building instruments which make detailed measurements of the composition of the atmosphere. These measurements provide a key link to the Earth’s climate system and are important in estimating and predicting air quality. The U of S has partnered with ABB Inc. to develop an instrument called LIFE which measures greenhouse gases. This internship will focus on developing software to control and acquire data from the instrument. The intern will study LIFE and the programming system used by ABB.

Assessing bioremediation potential for arsenic released from mine waste rock

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid that is widespread in the environment. Anthropogenic mining activities result in As being released from rock via mining activities in mine tailings, waste rock and process waters. AREVA has a proposed mine site expected to produce up to 6 million tonnes of waste rock containing As. This waste rock needs to be stored appropriately and the release of it’s As into groundwater must be limited to minimize environmental impacts.

Robust Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Short T2 Tissues

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging modality which can visualize the internal structure of the human body and is free of radiation. In this project, we would like to write a multi-functional and robust MRI software package using ultrashort echo time (UTE) technique to realize the imaging of the tissues, such as tendons, ligaments, and cortical bone, which are difficult to view through conventional MRI techniques.

Application of a new method for recovery of gold from electronic waste

Annually, around 50 million tonnes of electronic wastes is produced worldwide which contains valuable metals such as gold, copper, silver and palladium. Due to the lack of a suitable recycling technology, more than 80% of these wastes end up in landfills. The economic driving force for e-waste recycling has been recovery of precious metals, especially gold, in which more than 80% of the total value is attributed to gold alone. The current industrial processes for recovery of precious metals from electronic scraps are energy intensive, expensive, time consuming, and non-efficient.
