Privacy analysis of mobile analytics

Many companies require the gathering of user behavioural data from mobile devices and device applications in order to: i) improve their products, ii) monitor their systems, iii) engage in targeted marketing, etc. Significant privacy concerns exist with the measurement and storage of such data. In general, existing research highlights that data anonymization can be insufficient to fully address these risks, i.e. that anonymized data can be clustered and correlated with external sources to reveal private information.

Cebas Fluid Solver

This project seeks to develop a fluid solver that is capable of simulating the interaction between low viscosity fluids and solid objects, such as pouring down water from a water pitcher onto the ground.
Fluid effects such as splashing water are widely used in video game and film industry. As a visual effect solution provider, Cebas Visual Technology is very interested to develop fluid solver, and such a development experience is for the intern student.

Attention and executive function training in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Many children with ASD experience significant difficulties with attention and executive function. This research will investigate the effects of a direct attention and executive function training intervention in children ages 6 to 12 with ASD (high functioning). Research has shown that it is possible to improve attention and executive functioning in children with various neuropathologies. Participants will complete pre and post testing of their attention, executive function, social, academic, and behavioral functioning.

Measuring and quantifying mobile user quality of experience

The objective of this research is to develop an on-device, quality of experience (QoE) measurement suite, for Android based mobile devices. As mobile devices become the predominant method with which the world accesses the internet, it becomes increasingly important to understand the complex interaction between applications, mobile OS’s, the networks they run on, and the behaviours of a user base at large. Doing so with mobile devices raises a set of issues that aren’t present with traditional PC’s, and as such haven’t been explored thoroughly.

Assessing of affects on application-level mobile device quality of experience measures

With the growth of mobile device platforms such as smartphones and tablets, users now primarily experience the wireless networks they uses, whether cellular or WiFi based, through the context of the apps that they use. Hence, a heavy Skype user may perceive a given network to be of substantially different quality than would be perceived by a heavy text-messaging user. This reality has lead to a growing interest in quality-of-experience (QoE) measures as a compliment to more traditional network-level quality-of-service (QoS) measures.

CanGo – An Empowering Wayfinding Tool for Persons with Disabilities

For many persons with disabilities, for example those living with cognitive or visual impairments, it is often impossible to drive a personal vehicle and to travel independently, whether to school, to therapy, to their work place or to visit their friends. Because of their challenges, they must rely on caregivers or family members for transport, or use disability transport services that are often limited and quite unreliable.

The construction of a rapid-scan mid-infrared Mueller matrix ellipsometer for the study of protein adsorption at the solid-liquid interface

The proposed project involves the design and construction of a real-time broadband infrared Mueller-matrix ellipsometer for the study of protein adsorption at the solid-liquid interface. By preparing an incident light field in a well-defined polarization state, and then characterizing the change in polarization that occurs upon interacting with a sample (for example, in a reflection geometry), it is possible to learn about many structural details of the molecules that interacted with the beam. This field in general is called polarimetry or ellipsometry.

Optical Trapping of Nanoparticles and Optical Antennas

The student can choose between two sub-projects. The first involves our recent discovery of optical trapping of nanoparticles that is 10000 times more efficient than past methods. With this improvement we can trap, detect and manipulate even single proteins. We are studying the capability of this unique trapping configuration, which will be the research task of the student. The second project involves design of antenna like structures for the visible-infrared regime. These antennas will be of interest to single photon sources and enhanced photovoltaics (solar cells).

Technology to improve the quality of life of those with disabilities

The project will focus on the development of computer interfaces, tools and applications that are directed at improving the quality of life and independence of persons with disabilities. The suit of tools under development include; 1) Task management and organizational apps, and journal (record keeping and diary) applications that support individuals with cognitive challenges- including those with brain injuries and those with early stage dementia.

Preparing Nurses to Work in Technology Enabled Healthcare Environments

The proposed project provides new nurses with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to work in clinical practice settings in British Columbia, Canada and Internationally. The project will lead to the development of nurses who can not only articulate how nursing practice can be captured in health information systems (HIS) and telehealth applications, but can also use technology to enhance the safety and quality of their practice.
