Efficient edge inference benchmarking for AI-driven applications

Deep learning (DL) algorithms have achieved phenomenal success in different AI applications in recent times. Training DL algorithms require huge computational resources. Therefore, cloud or high-performance computing at the edge are obvious choices for this task. However, during inference cloud computing is not a suitable choice because of latency issues. There are billions of devices and sensors connected to the Internet, and data generated from these cannot be transferred and processed in geographically distant cloud data centers without incurring delays.

Improving the magnetic properties of electrical steels - Year two

This project is intended to help the industrial partner, Stelco, to develop electrical steels with improved magnetic properties through controlled thermomechanical processing. Electrical steels are widely used in the manufacturing of stators and rotors of electric motors used in general rotating machines and electric vehicles. Improving the magnetic properties of electrical steels would result in more efficient traction motors, and consequently extending the driving range of electric vehicles.

Methodology development and implementation of a platform for non-destructive evaluation of both butt-fused and electrofused polyethylene pipe joints using ultrasound and deep learning

The infrastructure industry needs a way to non-destructively assess plastic pipe joints. We aim to research, design, and develop methodologies and a prototype device that allow automated inspection of these joints (made with the two most common joining methods) using ultrasound and artificial intelligence (AI). We propose a novel method that uses a two-element ultrasonic transducer (inexpensive but sensitive enough compared to previous methods).

Automated Generation and Integration of AUTOSAR RTE Configurations

Automotive Open System Architecture (AUTOSAR) is a system-level standard used worldwide by automotive companies and suppliers to develop standardized software development frameworks for automobiles. The RTE software of AUTOSAR should be configured to develop an Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The manual and semiautomatic code creation phases of the software development process for the RTE is time consuming and inefficient. APAG Cosyst is one of the leading companies in ECU design and development and is working on designing a new CAD tool that will automatically generate RTE Code.

Determination of oxygen stability and shelf life of cannabidiol oil formulations.

We intend to develop standardized protocols for oxygen stability and shelf life testing of cannabidiol oil formulations. Overall, we will study the effect of time, O2 pressure, temperature, and sample quantity on the oxidation of different formulations, and how this accelerated oxidation profile can be extrapolated/modelled to predict long term shelf life under ambient conditions. As with any product, increased shelf life decreases production costs for the supplier. This work will afford graduate students the opportunity to gain experience in an expanding industry.

Testing Tile Drain Phosphorous Removal with a Novel Carboxymethylcellulose-iron Hydrogel Filtration Matrix

The objective of this research is to reduce the loss phosphate (P) used as fertilizer into waterways. Accumulation of phosphate in rivers and lakes leads to premature lake aging and high P-content allows growth and proliferation of algae, which degrade quality of drinking water, aquatic habitat, and recreational utilization of waterways.
The environmentally friendly compound carboxymethyl cellulose in combination with iron forms stable gel beads and when placed in water, bind and retain phosphate.

Design an integrated circuit for a solar powered wireless charger compatible with plastic injection molding process

A solar wireless charger makes use of the power of the sun to charge your mobile phone. The benefit of this portable device is that it makes it possible to charge your phone outdoor or when someone does not have access to electricity right away. It also helps people in undeveloped countries where access to electricity is not possible or is limited. Adding to this, considering the large amount of energy used each year by mobile phones, production of this device helps to reduce energy bills and using more renewable energy.

Investigation of Enhanced Superplastic Behaviour of AA5083 Aluminum Sheet for Vehicle Weight Reduction

Large automotive body panels are currently manufactured by heating aluminum sheets and pressurizing them into a die. However, this superplastic forming process requires long cycle times to avoid tearing the sheet. Preliminary work has demonstrated that by applying small pressure oscillations in addition to the increasing base line pressure a significant increase in the formability of superplastic alloys can be achieved. This research will consist of experimentally applying small oscillations to AA5083 sheet specimens pulled in tension.

Subjective Evaluation of Vehicle Semi-Active Suspension for Improved Ride and Handling

Semi-active suspension systems (SASSs) are becoming more prevalent in passenger vehicles on the road. These systems have been demonstrated to improve ride and handling performance of passenger vehicles. This project will provide a means to subjectively evaluate the performance of SASSs using a dynamic driving simulator. A controller model of a SASS will be created to predict the ride and handling of an FCA vehicle. The controller model will be connected to a full vehicle model and simulated in a real-time environment.

Next-Gen Amplified Sustainable Agriculture (NASA) – Its’s About Space

To mitigate risks of global malnutrition, hunger, and conflict; food production should become more efficient and sustainable. Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) can produce higher yields at reduced spatial and environmental footprints. This control improves management of key elements like water, nutrients, and nutritional outcomes. These advantages come with a cost however; of which energy is among the greatest. Greenhouses and vertical farms can have significant thermal management requirements, and increasingly, very large electricity demands.
