Fabrication of HTV-SR/ATH/DE/FS Nanocomposites Emerging Damage-tolerant Volumetric Superhydrophobicity Followed by Assessment of the Icephobic, Self-cleaning, Thermal, and Electrical Properties for Application to High-voltage Insulator

Given the detrimental effect of the ice and pollution accumulation on the high-voltage insulators, fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces having icephobic and self-cleaning is highly demanded. Superhydrophobic surfaces possessing low surface energy materials with favorable surface roughness have attracted tremendous attentions in both science and technology. However, lack of favorable mechanical durability of such appealing materials has confined their mass production and commercialization.

PLASYNOC PLAsma SYnthesis of NanO Carbon

The proposed project is part of the partnership between the plasma engineering laboratory of the University of Sherbrooke (UdeS) and the industrial partner KWI Solutions Polymères inc.
The objective of the project is to design an arc plasma reactor that will be able to synthesize nanocarbons (single or multi-layer graphene, carbon black, single or multi-wall nanotubes and graphene ribbon) from gaseous hydrocarbons. This reactor will operate at the kilo lab scale, which is to say that approximately 0.5 kg / h of nanocarbon will be produced with 1 kg / h of reagent.

Recent years have seen significant leaps towards perfecting the fabrication of ultra-long fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for application in non-linear optics, including fibered DFB lasers. Previous work from the laboratory was able to successfully identify and mitigate some of the intrinsic defects causing non-uniformity in multiple type of fibers leading to their compensation attaining high quality reproducible ultra-long FBGs.
