Quantifying fusarium toxins in greenhouse-derived matrices

Canadian sweet peppers have become common in our grocery stores, providing us with year-round access to fresh produce. These are grown in greenhouses, but in the past two years, a mould, fusarium, has been found attacking greenhouse peppers across the world. The best weapon against this mould is clean water and early detection, but this […]

Water-Safe UV Curable Antimicrobials Nanoscale coatings for Plastics

Our research is focused on finding new ways to combat the spread of Hospital acquired infections (HAI’s) in hospitals and other institutional work places. Our research combines a new non-leaching chemical nanotechnology that forms a protective barrier to difficult surfaces and kills bacteria on contact. The nanocoatings are water based and fix readily to surfaces […]

Short-term effects of anthropogenic sediment additions on biogeochemical properties of the Fraser River Estuary

The Fraser River estuary tidal marsh is declining, and loss of this key habitat has wide ecosystem implications, from supporting juvenile salmon to migrating shorebirds. The Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Project is attempting to reverse this trend. This project will assess the short-term effects of anthropogenic sediment additions through assessment of biogeochemical and microalgal indicators.

A PROPOSAL FOR CONTINUATION OF A RESEARCH PROGRAM TO INVESTIGATE THE ROLE OF CATHEPSIN K IN OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA) AND CREATE NEW DIAGNOSTIC ASSAYS FOR THE EARLY DETECTION OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is a chronic painful disease of joints that involves the progressive destruction of the articular cartilage and bone and leads to pain. It affects both humans and animals. Animals can serve as models for the human disease and in this case we will study equine OA. There is currently no effective medication that can […]

Determination of postharvest practices that impact the physicochemical properties cannabis biomass ash

This academic-industry collaboration aims to determine postharvest storage methods, combustion parameters and consumer behaviour for dried cannabis products that influence the physicochemical properties of cannabis ash, of which appearance (colour and integrity) has become an inadvertent dried cannabis product attribute that may drive consumer decisions towards legal distribution in a highly competitive market. Data generated […]

Hepatic encephalopathy outpatient quality metrics

Hepatic encephalopathy is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. As an initial part of her thesis, the intern will contribute to determining priorities for the development of an outpatient cirrhosis database inclusive of hepatic encephalopathy quality measures. The findings will be disseminated through the intern’s thesis, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations, contributing to the […]

Cytotoxicity analysis of novel monoclonal antibodies targeting SSAT-1

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide with approximately 8 million deaths in 2010. Most cancer treatments lack specificity and affect the whole body, with toxic effects on both cancerous and normal cells. The cytotoxic effect of a new therapy developed by Biomark Technologies, Inc. targeting cancer cells will be assessed. Biomark […]

Arcana Luminis

As physical materials, water and glass play a key role in defining Vancouver’s unique urban soundscape. In the same way that light is refracted through prisms, so to is sound refracted through water and glass; so to is music, through the prisms of our minds as composers, performers, and as an urban community. Arcana Luminis […]
