An Environmental Scan of Self-Management Interventions in Clinical Practice

One approach that is commonly used to treat chronic condition is self-management interventions. Self-management refers to the daily “tasks that individuals must undertake to live well with … chronic conditions” (Adams et al., 2004). To help people with chronic conditions develop the skills needed to manage their conditions, several self-management interventions have been created. Many of these interventions have been extensively researched; however, moving these research findings into the real-world is difficult since the real-world is much less controlled than the research world. To learn how self-management interventions can transition from research to real-life, we intend to examine how other self-management interventions have made this transition. We will accomplish this by conducting an environmental scan, a broad search of available materials, on self-management interventions used in clinical practice. Specifically, we will determine how the self-management interventions we find are delivered, regulated, and adapted to ensure access, quality, and fidelity.

Ethical Space: A framework to support equity in land use planning in the Upper Columbia region of British Columbia

Approaches to land use planning in BC are rapidly shifting in an effort to right previous wrongs with respect to the dispossession of Indigenous land. The BC government committed to developing a new planning framework, through the Modernized Land Use Planning (MLUP) program, that involves deep collaboration with Indigenous Peoples to conduct equitable decision-making process with respect to public land use planning. This research presents Ethical Space as a framework to achieve equity in land use planning in BC. This proposed project will support the work of Gwen Bridge, an Indigenous consultant, and leading practitioner of Ethical Space across North America, by elevating her contributions to develop useful resources and academic contributions that train other planners in Ethical Space. The project will promote knowledge mobilization through the development of workshops and training materials for planners to use.

Characterization of in-feed materials of wood pellet plants

The key objective of this research is to measure the quality of in-feed materials of wood pellet plants around the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. This research will include the collection of in-feed materials from at least eight plants and a series of experimental measurements in in-feed properties such as moisture content, ash content, bulk density, particle size distribution, calorific value, and smoking temperature. Wood pellets are a crucial bioenergy component in the global transition away from fossil fuels and in replacing coal in power generation. The results in this project will facilitate the improvement in the safe operation of pellet plants and the enhancement of pellet qualities. A successful project will allow Canadian pellet plants to obtain insights on producing the highest quality products in the safest manner.

Capacity Building for Competitiveness in Aboriginal forestry

This project recognizes the significant business challenges First Nations forestry enterprises face which have the effect of limiting the benefits to First Nations from forests (Wellstead and Stedman 2010). There is limited awareness of the conditions that affect the success and failure of Aboriginal enterprises in the forest sector (Trosper et al 2008). Research on economic questions is more limited than expected given the widespread activity taking place, despite the widespread importance of forests to Aboriginal peoples and their long-standing history of resource management and land use (Wyatt et al 2010a). We focus in on a fundamental problem: governance. The research will address this problem by working with FN to identify business objectives and designing an effective business governance structure, drawing on the empirical work of the Harvard Project. In this vein, the outcomes of the study will lead to improved business process, supporting the competitiveness of the partners. Working in a participatory action research approach with the partners, the researcher will test and guide the implementation of an optimal governance structure for the partners– linking it to the unique context of each enterprise. The use of the Native Nations Institute’s governance tool is novel in the Canadian context;

Aquracy – enhanced vector magnetometer precision through quantum pulse sequences

Magnetometers have been used for decades for exploration in mining, navigation and defence and security.
However, high accuracy sensors often provide only the amplitude of magnetic fields, severely limiting the extent
of magnetic interpretations. A novel type of quantum magnetometers based on Nitrogen Vacancy centers in
diamond promise enhanced sensitivity and accuracy, while providing the vector magnetic field, which can be used
to tailor specialized algorithms to enhance the relevance of magnetic measurements. However, its accuracy is
limited by the requirement to use bias magnets for vectorial operation, which are prone to drift.
Aquracy aims to implement and demonstrate a scheme exploiting microwave pulse sequences to extract the
vector magnetic field even without magnets. Pulse sequences will be implemented in the portable diamond
magnetometer and on optical lab setups to benchmark its efficiency. Tradeoffs of the approach on the sensitivity
and bandwidth will be evaluated with specialized magnetic equipment.

Developing urban asset agents (institutional buildings, commercial buildings, transformers) and user-aggregator Unified Modelling Language within a transactive energy framework

This project provides key elements that would help create a transactive energy framework testbed. The testbed is expected to be used for analyzing different market and business models which facilitate increased participation of the end-users, improved efficiency in the grid and optimal usage and distribution of the energy present in the urban neighbourhoods.
The work proposed as part of the project adds to the work already being done by Hydro-Quebec along with ETS and UQTR by providing building agents, transformer agents and the communication language and framework that would make negotiation between the different assets in an electrical network of a known topology, ensuring optimal usage of the assets present and the constraints within each type of building.

Producer Training in Canada

Our project is centred on identifying the needs of the performing arts sector, in terms of producing, and understanding what form of producing supports these needs and what solution can we develop to solve this problem. Our hypothesis for this project is that there is a major gap in the Canadian performing arts industries with the availability of skilled and knowledgeable creative producers. Our research will define the skills required for creative producers to successfully support artists, enhance the business side of the industry, and address the financial precarity and cultural inequity that exists. The overall goal of the project is to test our hypothesis by conducting research through a partnership between Ryerson University and the National Arts Centre (NAC). Our proposed methodology includes one-on-one interviews with industry professionals, an international scan and literature review, and the development of a pilot project using the LEAN start-up methodology.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles operating Beyond the Visual Line Of Sight in Urban Settings over 5G Networks: Market analysis and Applications

The goal of the broader Alliance submission is to develop a technology platform to test and benchmark best practices, policy recommendations, and regulations for the safe and reliable operation of automated UAVs during ground-based BVLOS (Beyond the visual line of sight) missions in urban areas, using 5G networks, a first in Canada. The Mitacs internships relate to the Alliance submission by focusing on how the technology (UAVs BVLOS over 5G Network in urban settings) studied in the Alliance submission translates into operational deliverables and business models within each of the four partners’ domains.
This project will involve six interns, 5 of them graduate or last year undergraduate students and 1 Postdoctoral fellow (PDF, who also leads the Alliance-based topics). Four interns will focus on how to translate the technologies developed and deployed in the Alliance submission into business opportunities for each of the partners’ businesses, and the other two will study in depth the last mile delivery hybrid system.

Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals@Graphene-based Sponges Hybrids: Synthesis, and Optoelectrical Properties

Hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskites nanocrystals (HPNCs), such as CH3NH3PbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I), have recently experienced extraordinary development in optoelectronic applications due to their promising optical and electrical properties. Although most investigations have been mainly focused on improving and optimizing photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors efficiencies of HPNCs, there is great interest and potential towards biological, biomedical, and environmental applications (e. g. biosensors, bioimaging). To accomplish this purpose, one possible strategy is to incorporate HPNCs into a highly porous host material to make a stable composite with enhanced quality. Therefore, we propose to use graphene-based sponges (GSs) as three-dimensional highly porous scaffolds to hold HPNCs, which has not been investigated before. We expect our strategy to result in a stable structure to enhance HPNCs stability as well as provide outstanding features of both GSs and HPNCs for applications in optoelectrical sensors or detectors. Results of the project are deliverable in research journals and can be filed as a patent.
