Implementing AI models to improve persona classification and portfolio performance predictions

Finliti is planning to use AI to improve their business operations. Some areas they are looking into involve using AI to sort clients into the most appropriate persona which will reflect their investing preferences, and assessing the future performance of a proposed portfolio while accounting for a client’s persona and financial goals. AI is intended to be used to improve the efficiency of the decisions and predictions and eliminate human bias that can affect decision-making. Gavin will assist with the research, setup, training, evaluation, and fine-tuning of these models. At the end of the term, Gavin will produce an executive summary that outlines the use of the code for the organization, and a technical report to allow other mathematicians at Finliti to pick up from his work.

Évaluation de vêtements de protection contre les pesticides : vers de nouvelles recommandations au Canada ?

Le projet de recherche vise à caractériser les performances de vêtements de protection normalisés contre les pesticides pour les producteurs agricoles. L’efficacité de protection sera mesurée en conditions réelles d’utilisation auprès de producteurs de pommes québécois. Les performances mesurées devront mener à des niveaux d’exposition acceptables, selon les critères de l’agence règlementaire de lutte antiparasitaire. Les niveaux d’exposition seront également comparés à ceux rapportés dans la littérature. Dans l’hypothèse où les résultats seraient positifs, il faudrait envisager de développer leur utilisation grâce au transfert de connaissances, mais aussi grâce à l’inclusion de leur recommandation dans les étiquettes de produits antiparasitaires.

Investigation of Lithium Mineralization, Distribution Trends, and Remobilization in the Tanco Pegmatite, Manitoba

The Government of Canada considers lithium as a critical element because it is a major component of rechargable batteries in, for example, electric vehicles, but it is also used in lubricants, ceramics, and glasses. The Tanco mine in Manitoba supplies approximately 5% of the world’s lithium, but little is known about the distribution of lithium in the ore body and what geological events led to that distribution. The intern will study this using data and samples supplied by the partner organization, by doing geological mapping and modelling, and by using advanced analytical methods. The benefit to the partner organization will be a much better understanding of their ore body and more efficient mining and ore processing. The results will also benefit future lithium mining in Canada.

As new innovation (AI) develops and grows, Crowdiate must constantly shift and adapt to maintain their competitive advantage, while also seeking opportunities to implement the new advances into their offerings. They additionally are looking to grow their creative community – prioritizing quality over quantity, along with deepening the relationships with these creative individuals. The team feels as though they would benefit from having a fresh set of eyes to provide insight and feedback on their internal operations, as well as promotional strategies and initiatives. As a relatively small yet ambitious team, Crowdiate has large aspirations, and could benefit in terms of adding on an intern to achieve all of the tasks they envision for this summer.

Education, training, networking and mobilization on social housing resources

This project will show WCWRC as an active organizer in the Right to Housing coalitions public education campaign. This campaign will promote the need and reasoning for governments and society to invest in the social housing that WCWRC participants and the community needs. Increasing the stock of social housing is a critical element, necessary to address the financial needs of housing, and to ensure that housing is financially accessible to all who need it. August, Martine (2022). Increasing the stock of social housing also ensure that the housing remains affordable in perpetuity. This community based process will engage with residents and partners to develop education and training materials to work towards increasing the number of social housing units.

Inner-City Work Study program at Elizabeth Fry Society

Elizabeth Fry Society Manitoba (EFSM) also caters to women who are at risk of becoming involved with the criminal justice system. This organizations’s overall goal is to reduce recidivism, and have the group and individual supports needed in order to help women thrive in the community, by learning new methods of pro- social coping mechanisms. The goal of the programs provided by the Elizabeth Fry Society is to teach women safe and non-judgemental practices. The organization also helps women with legal resources, assistance, and support for the court system they will experience. Elizabeth Fry Society helps women who struggle with addiction, by providing self-help programs for women to battle their substance use and empower them to beat their addiction. The Elizabeth Fry Society is also inclusive to women, transgender, two-spirit, and non-binary folks in a non-judgemental setting to be there for support, guiding their needs, and helping with their skills.
Elizabeth Fry Society of Manitoba (EFSM) is an independent not-for-profit organization that works with the needs of women who have had contact with the provincial and federal justice system, including women currently awaiting trial, those who are post-bail, and post-release.

The wireless products of Lynkz are developed to save the time and costs for its customers. The Internet of Things (IoT) technology is used to connect things to the network, such that the devices can be monitored or controlled using the internet. Therefore, smart devices that can react with the environment and are autonomous in their performance are achieved. This project should result in a strategy that should minimize robustly the costs for Lynkz telemetry applications.

Angad Gujral- Critical Tech Healthcare Cooling Therapy for Infants

The proposed project aims to study the use of cooling therapy for infants in Canada, with a focus on analyzing existing protocols and the cooling therapy market. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the Canadian healthcare system and how cooling therapy as a more efficient alternative and across a larger geographical to help babies with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Linguistic Cues for Heuristic Determination of Patterns of Speech in Noise

This project aims to investigate the benefits of using linguistic cues for extracting speech-ofinterest from competing background noise. Given an algorithm which detects formants of a speaker of interest within an audio signal which includes background noise, and given that the limits of such an approach are reached when formants of the speaker of interest become substantially lost within the noise, are there linguistic cues within some formants, or linguistic relationships between some successive speech sounds, which can be used to infer with confidence which speech sounds from the speaker of interest are present beneath the noise floor of a noisy audio signal. The partner organization will benefit from this internship by extending the range of solutions it can offer to the market. If the proposed solution proves to be useful and novel, the partner organization will apply for patent protection. This could lead to increased sales and the additional employment within the company.

Effects of invasive plant management on urban plant-pollinator interactions

To restore a damaged ecosystem, one of the first steps is to remove alien invasive plants. These plants come
from elsewhere in the world and can deeply alter the native plant community in their new environments. These
changes can in turn affect insect pollinators, like bees, who depend on plants for food. In naturalized or agricultural
environments, removing invasive plants can increase the biodiversity and quantity of pollinators living in restored
ecosystems. But in cities, where ecosystems are completely different from those that exist in nature, non-native
plants may be providing pollinators with important food resources. Our project will examine the effects of removing
the invasive Canada thistle Cirsium arvense on urban pollinators at The Meadoway, an ecosystem restoration
project managed by the TRCA in Scarborough, ON. With this information, restoration practitioners will be able to
design a thistle management plan that minimizes the harm caused by this invasive plant while maximizing potential
benefits to The Meadoway’s pollinators.

Amino Acid Electronic Structures and Interactions

Quantum chemistry techniques can only be used in small-scale systems and the structure of biomolecules like proteins cannot be effectively examined by them. So, it is essential to develop a workable solution that could be applied to larger systems. Finding such a solution will then enable us to investigate the structure of larger molecules like proteins.
Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is a relatively fast and efficient method. It can handle larger systems with a high degree of accuracy and allows for the investigation of the electronic properties of a system.
In my thesis project, we are interested to investigate the electronic structure of amino acids as the building block of proteins by utilizing DMRG methods. The findings of this study can be extended to larger systems, like proteins, and consequently may have applications in drug design and development.

Optical interconnects and intermediate measurements in atomic quantum computers.

A modular quantum computer is a system that utilizes the principles of quantum mechanics to store and process information. Although quantum computers have the potential to offer significantly greater computational power than classical computers, their development is complicated by a lack of scalabil-ity. To address this issue, small quantum processors or modules are employed, which can be intercon-nected using photonic methods. The photonic interconnects provide a way to create quantum correla-tions between the modules, enabling complex calculations to be performed. This allows the algorithm of a given computation to be distributed over different modules, thus implementing them in parallel. However, the task of connecting different modules remains a challenge, and the objective of this pro-ject is to develop a model that can forecast and reduce errors arising from these connections. In addi-tion, this project will examine ways to implement error correction methods that are critical for achiev-ing fault-tolerant quantum computing.
