Spatially-aware lighting estimation

We present a method for automatically estimating the lighting conditions from a single image. As opposed to most previous works which proposed methods that estimate only global lighting or use a limited illumination representation (low frequency SSH, parametric model), the proposed method attempt to use a new spatially-varying light representation with realist texture to render shiny objects. Our method will estimate a coarse (cuboid) geometry of an indoor scene from a single image and use this geometric information to hallucinate a realistic room texture used for illumination. This representation will allow to place a virtual object anywhere in a standard photograph and render scene reflections to the viewer for realistic object insertion. To this end, an indoor HDR panorama dataset will be annotated with room layout and the method will be quantitatively evaluated and compared to the most relevant approaches from the literature.

‘A Strategic Plan to Improve Indigenous Housing in British Columbia’

This study aims to understand the ways in which Indigenous Housing can be improved in British Columbia, by identifying strategies to best support the Indigenous Housing providers. This research includes the exploration of the capacity needed at Indigenous housing organizations in order to satisfy the needs of urban and rural Indigenous Peoples as well as develop a strategy to build this capacity. Additionally, this research will outline potential steps to take to ensure Indigenous housing units across BC are seismically resilient. For AHMA, the umbrella organization of Indigenous Housing Providers in BC, this research is necessary to identify policy gaps and ensure that Indigenous Housing Providers have the capacity and resources to support the Indigenous communities they serve.

Intelligent Drowsiness Prognosis Using Chaos Theory

Drowsiness is considered the foremost cause of accidents in the mining industry. Studies estimate that up to 65% of annual accidents in mines are related to drowsiness. The total loss to the company’s assets is around $22.6 billion and operator lives are not replaceable. The lack of real-time drowsiness monitoring and prognosis in the mining industry can cause irrecoverable losses, so a prognosis system is vital. Different drowsiness detection systems were developed, such as behavior-based and vehicle-based techniques, but, none of them are reliable and accurate in mining applications. The proposed project applies nonlinear extraction algorithms to EEG signals to develop a reliable and effective drowsiness prognosis system. This project will benefit Canada’s mining industries, it saves lives and also prevents catastrophic failures and damages machinery meanwhile it enables the Canadian mining industry to become more competitive and efficient.

Development of a technique for radioactive source term detection and realtime analysis for low-level radioactive waste

Nuclear power currently provides approximately 50% of Ontario’s electricity. Operation of nuclear power plants produces a variety of radioactive waste. In particular, low-level radioactive waste makes up about 95% of total non-fuel waste volumes. To reduce volume, low-level materials must be sorted to determine if their radioactivity has sufficiently decayed and they can be safely recycled. However, this sorting work is currently done by hand, which is a low-tech, time-consuming and labour-intensive method. To address this challenge, the interns working in this Mitacs research will develop a new radiation detection and realtime data analysis method. Successful completion of this Mitacs research will enable automated sorting, re-use and recycling of the low-level waste, which will lead to a great reduction in waste volume and operation cost. Therefore, the economic and environmental benefit to Laurentis Energy Partners and Canadian nuclear industries will be great.

Tool-path generation and optimization for robot machining using Artificial Intelligence

This research aims to generate and optimize optimal tool-path(process path of robot) by learning data on kinematics and dynamics properties required for the machining process using multi-axis robots with Artificial Intelligence(AI). Based on the end-effector of the robot, a new approach is proposed to optimize tool path in drilling or milling processes and to develop AI algorithms in terms of surface roughness, circularity, defects, and time. Recently, the manufacturing robot market has been gradually expanding and research has been actively conducted. Accurate prediction and process optimization are essential for the machining process. However, most industrial robots do not provide information about the robot’s dynamic parameters. For precision of machining requires data on dynamic properties that affect the result. Therefore, researches are being carried out to estimate dynamic properties. But, these methods take a long time and are very complex. Thus, if this research is carried out, it is expected that the outcomes of the development of new analysis methods for robot machining will be expected through the development of AI algorithms.

Modeling logistics for supply of bioenergy feedstock

The current version of the Integrated Biomass Supply Analysis (IBSAL) model is deterministic. As such, the uncertainty surrounding the results obtained cannot be studied or quantified. The focus of this research project is to incorporate uncertainty into the model in order to make it more realistic, provide additional insights into its properties and potentially suggest new types of solutions with corresponding margins of error and variability. The probabilistic version of the IBSAL model will allow users to test and explore more realistic sets of input assumptions and allow for the investigation of “what if” type of scenarios. The probabilistic version of the model will provide an opportunity to quantify spatial variability of economic, carbon and fuels costs in response to major driving variables such as crop residue yield and recovery rates.
