Expanding her research horizons

Globalink Research Intern Daniela Samaniego Castruita delves into research on depression

Hailing from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Daniela is stationed at the University of Saskatchewan for 12 weeks to work alongside Professor Adelaine Leung in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Her interest in neurocognitive and neurodegenerative diseases paired perfectly with Professor Leung’s research project on depression.

In the lab, Daniela is using preclinical rodent models to examine an area of the brain known to play a key role in memory and emotional processing. Daniela’s results will play an important role in better understanding which drugs are effective treatments for depression.

When asked what her favourite experience in Canada has been, Daniela has a difficult time narrowing it down to one:  “I’ve enjoyed each and every experience in Canada, but I’d have to say my favourite has been the Mitacs Step workshops. I loved the practical skills the workshops taught me.”

Grateful for her research internship, Daniela explains how she has benefited from Mitacs Globalink: “This experience has broadened my horizons to different opportunities in my field of research. I’m looking forward to continuing my graduate studies to become a professor in neurocognitive science.”
